American Idol: 2/17

Man, what a suckfest that was tonight. Everybody blew.

Let’s run them down:

Matthew (Rose Bowl Guy): A solid meh. It was almost good but not quite. He loses points for the “make his head bleed” remark about Simon. This guy is every jock who slammed me into a locker in high school.

Briana: I really wanted to like her and I still do like her personality and her voice but she picked a bad song. Nora Jones was not the right choice to really show any power or range. It’s a dynamically flat song and it has no “glory notes.” I think she went really safe and ended up just being bland. I wonder if she’s worried about coming off too butch and was trying to fem it up too much. Too bad. I hope she gets a look as a wild card. There really is an emotionally resonant tone in her voice. She just needs more confidence. She’s one of the more talented people in the contest.

Noel: Gahh…just…gahh. I don’t remember every moment of every show but I’m going to guess that that was probably the worst non-audition performance in the history of the show. Every note was out of key. Even Paula couldn’t think of anything nice to say.

Kara: I didn’t remember her from any previous episodes and had no idea who she was. Points off for the skanky short kirt. Points off for saying in her intro that she looks like Sarah Jessica Parker (um…sorry, honey…no you don’t). Her performance was just meh but even meh was better than Noel. We’ll never see Kara again, I suspect. I liked Randy’s answer when she asked for “constructive advice,” “Pick a better song and sing it better.”

Lisa: Not bad. She would have only been average in the first group but just singing in key made her sound like Whitney with this bunch. She’ll get through to the next round.

Jesus: How did the Roman brothers make it past the initial audition? That high note made my ears bleed.

Camile: Almost good, but with potential. There’s a nice natural tremolo in her voice that approaches something like soul. I’d vote her through but only because I’d have to pick a second person and because I think she has room to grow.

Marisa: Extremely annoying with her hammy mannerisms. Her “Come on, y’all” was the most aggressively obnoxious moment of the night. Her posture on stage looked like she was trying to take a dump. Her singing was ok, but i hated her personality and hope she doesn’t go through.

My predictions: Lisa and Marisa, but I’d rather see Camile than Marisa.

I like Briana’s look and style, and I really wanted to vote for her. After her performance, which I thought was okay but not exceptional, I wasn’t sure I could give her my vote in good conscience. Fortunately for me, most of the rest of the crowd sucked so badly that I feel okay voting for her.

I also thought Camile (that’s the Hawaiian chick, right?) was quite good. I’m voting for her and Briana. But nobody in this group was really good. Fantasia from group 1 is still far and away the best.

Tonight’s show made me really wonder about the secondary screening process. Is it just me or would Scooter Girl have blown this group away tonight? How did the Romans get this far and not her?

  1. Matt Rogers–Looked very plain, but is still very cute. Lord! What on Earth was he singing? I mean, he sounded good, but the song kind of killed it. Pleasant though, so it’s all good. Just good. :\ I’m with Randy, Matt could have done much better. I would have given it a 5/10.

  2. Briana–A Norah Jones song? Hooo boy…I’m not a fan of Norah Jones. But, Briana did an excellent job with a song that I consider “weak”. Well done, but I wish she did a different song.

  3. Noel–Ugh…yuck…weak…bad…blah…gah…NAH!

  4. Kara–Looked nice, but didn’t quite sound that way. I mean, it’s not like she was awful, but she sounded dead. Like she was just going through the motions. Different song would have helped.

  5. Lisa L.–She looked very beautiful. WOW! I, for one, was impressed! Excellent job! Best so far indeed!

  6. Jesus–Better than his brother, but not much. Meh, feh, geh, gah, NAH!

  7. Camille–Very pretty. She was better than I excpected. I never thought I’d say this, but she was among the better ones tonight. I don’t quite agree that she has the best potential, but I do agree that she does have a nice, pleasant tone.

  8. Marisa-- Very good, I liked it. In the top three! I never noticed the stance, but I do agree with Simon.

My top three:

  1. Lisa L.
  2. Camille
  3. Marisa

I never expected to have this top three… Most of my votes went Lisa L. with Camille getting the occassional vote. Overall, a very weak group and I expected better from my favorites(Briana/Matt) going into this. :frowning:

It’s not just you. I agree. I also believe that George Huff and Bao would have blown away Jesus/Noel too.

Why don’t they sing more familiar tunes? I know from working in radio that familiarity endears. If they used a song more people were likely to know, AND didn’t butcher it, they wouldn’t have to work so hard to get the viewers into it. That could mean a lot more votes.

I like Matt a great deal and I usually loathe jock types. I don’t think he’s gotten a fair shake from the judges, but I’m sure everyone says that about their favorites.

Hopefully, this is the last we’ve seen of the Boring Brothers. I would have dropped them back at the ‘she bangs’ stage of the competition.

What’s the fuss about Camille? Did the judges genuinely like her performance or did they not want her to cry? I didn’t see any there there.

When are Ryan and Simon going to have that knife fight? It’s obvious they really can’t stand each other.

I have to agree. What a dismal bunch this week. Lisa, Marisa, and Camile SHOULD be in the top 3.

Here’s a thought. In the first 2 seasons, the top 10 and 12 were evenly divided gender-wise. We’ve already put 2 females through, and will most likely put 2 more through tomorrow night. IIRC, there are only 5 more males in the competition. It looks as if the final 12 will be mostly female. Should we expect more catfighting and snarkiness in the house once they move in? Fox would thrive on that, y’know.

If they really hated each other, Ryan would be gone. More likely their animosity is something akin to “professional wrestling” animosity.
Also, Diogenes is right about the secondary screening process. I thought it was done very poorly at the time, and this episode just confirms that. Didn’t Paula say something like “we failed” at one point? I think they realize they kept the wrong people.

—I had to go to a work-related seminar yesterday. Thinking that I might not be back in time for AI, I told Mr. Rilch, “Record it for me, and if I’m still not back yet, just vote as many times as you can for Matt and Brianna. Unless they just utterly make fools of themselves.” But I was back on time, and I heard it with my own ears. I am very, very disappointed in both of them.

But hey, there’s still the Wild Card round. Unless Matt already blew it when he said that about Simon.

—Not only was Kara’s mini a bad choice, but the lighting made her look, at first glance, as if she had cellulite. Closer examination refuted this, but still: jagged rays of white light on bare legs is not flattering.

—Funny thing about the two brothers: they only had one supporter between them, another brother. What’s up with that? Parents said, “I’m not touching this with a barge pole—I don’t want to referee if one wins and the other doesn’t”? Well, they have nothing to worry about there, at least.

And quite honestly, I’m glad, simply because I wouldn’t have looked forward to continuing to hear someone called “Jee-zus” instead of “hey-zoos”. And “Noel” should be pronounced “knowle”, not “no-elle”; that’s a girl’s name!

—Go Lisa!

They lost both of their parents and are being raised by their brother. I think it was in the first episode this season. Something about growing up around drugs and losing their parents to AIDS.

Awwww come on now, you telling me you haven’t heard of any of those songs???

…oh.

I think I’ll go paint my tongue black…

Blech. Just plain blech.

Still waiting for Michael Keown to return…

1)Lisa who looked great and sounded very good.
2)Matt who looked adorable and sounded fine
3)Briana (who put me to sleep), Camile(who looked very frightened and young) and Marisa (whose stance didn’t bother me as much as it seemed to bother the judges) who all sounded O.K.

The rest sucked.

I’ve been kicking myself since last night because I missed the first half of the show, but apparently I didn’t miss much! I do wish I’d seen Matt and Briana. Of the ones I saw, I only liked Lisa. I thought I liked Matt too, but the attitude has taken a sharp downturn, no?

Marisa’s pronunciation was so terrible I wanted them all to say something about it. I hate it when singers get all weird with the words. “Waitnees. I’m your Waitnees.” Bah. Good singers show some notion that they know what the words mean.

I was rooting for Briana, but Norah Jones wasn’t a good choice for her. She had kind of a punk thing going. She should have gone with something else. Pink maybe.

Camile was so nervous it was painful, but I’m glad she made it. She’s as cute as a button. Cuter, even.

Lisa was good.

I mean, what’s American Idol?

Hear hear. I was rooting for Skutir, er, Scooter girl from the NY auditions.

I bet what Matt said he wanted to do to Simon was a football expression. He probably thought it would sound hilarious. His whiny change of tone after he said it struck me as a person suprised by the lack of reaction to his joke.

I thought Matt did the best job in actually singing (hitting the right notes and all), but his performance lacked passion and personality. It was a nice, safe cover version. He’s got a great voice, but he might not have the artistic talent to make a song his own. And the jock-speak at the end was a huge clanger.

I loved Camilla (Hawaii girl?), and I really wanted her to do well. She did “okay”, which doesn’t seem to suffice in this competition.

In general, I was surprised at the song selection all around. Brianna trying to be Nora Jones was just a huge mistake - I’m thinking she should head toward Joan Jett territory and try for tough-but-in-a-cute-way.

Noel (or was it Jesus? They were uniformly bad) lost me when Ryan asked him if he should go on to the next round, and why, and he said something like “sure I should. I mean, why not?” If he wasn’t aware that his performance was a HUGE “why not”, then he’s just deluded.

Marisa was good, actually, or the closest to it out of the bunch. I didn’t notice her stance until Simon mentioned it; that’s something that can be fixed pretty easily.

Jeez, I’ve got a lot of opinions for someone who doesn’t watch reality tv. . .
