American Idol: 2/17

I have to say, I read the above without the “:” and, even though I don’t like taking the name of the Lord in vain…I just HAD to snicker. A lot. G

Mainly because I was asking myself the same question last night. I think they made it because the “drama” of the 2 brothers separated for x amount of years, orphans, competing against one another was just too much for Fox/Simon to turn down.

And hopefully, the “drama” will end tonight.

Cats

I had the same feeling. I thought it was a pretty stupid thing to say. Hasn’t he watched the show? The tweeners in the audience all boo when Simon says something mean, but I get the impression that the viewers in general love him. Justin Guarini mouthed off to him on the first season and nearly got the boot. People don’t seem to vote for the rude/disrespectful contestants.

In other news, I voted for the first time ever last night. I texted in a vote for the Hawaiian girl, Camille. First, because she’s good, and second because I have to vote for my home state girl!*

Disclaimer: Although I was indeed born in Honolulu, Hawaii, my parents moved to Californian when I was six.*

**Six weeks old

Matt: Yes, bozo, we KNOW you were in the Rose Bowl. I just don’t like him, no matter what he sings. He has this aura of smarminess.
The Brothers: Suck. Plain ol’ suck.
Briana: The song sucked. But I like this girl. She could tear it up, you just know it. I hope she makes it through just to see what she will do next.
Kara: No, you don’t look like Sarah Jessica Parker.
Camile: I watched her, but don’t remember a darn thing.
Lisa: Liked her.
Marisa: Again, watched her, but don’t remember.

Based on that half-arsed scorecard, I vote for Briana and Lisa.

The last contestant, Marisa Joy, is from my hometown: Cloverdale, CA.

She’s younger than my middle sister and older than my younger sister, so I hadn’t heard about her until my mom told me last week that some girl from Cloverdale was going to be on the show. I was flipping channels and caught the performance of the last singer, and it turns out she’s the one from my hometown.

Cloverdale Represent, yo. It’s about time it’s famous for something other than being where Polly Klaas’s body was found and high school kids hacking into government computers (friends of my sister).

Who was the one who said she should go on because she has a sinus infection and couldn’t hear out of one ear? I almost puked. What a totally lame excuse. Just for making such a lame excuse she should have been kicked out of the contest. I can understand saying, “I had an off week but my performance will improve if given the chance” but not “I have a sinus infection”. Even Ryan didn’t buy that one.

As for Jesus, he was the first person I’ve seen get grilled by Ryan as to why he thought he should still be in the competition. When your performace is so bad thay Ryan is after you, just bow out and run from the building. By the way, someone needs to explain to the brothers that starting and ending every sentence with “Ya know” just makes you look stupid. No, we don’t know, that’s why he asked you a question.

That was Briana.

Wait, no! It was Kara.

I make it a point to close my eyes and listen to their actual voices while they each perform, making notes of the mistakes they make throughout the song. That was flat out the worst group of 8 in any American Idol thus far…by a long shot. Frankly, none of them should get through.

Because the rules of the game dictate that two of them will get through, it should be between Lisa, Camille, and Marie. Those are the only ones I could stomach hearing again. A certain part of me wants to see kara get through though. Whether she looks like Sarah Jessica Parker or not isn’t all that important to it. Her singing was very unimpressive this round though so she probably shouldn’t go through.

A small sadistic part of me wants to see the Roman brothers get voted through. Watching Simon go through the roof would make my year.

What was that travesty? That dude can’t sing.

West Coast haven’t seen it yet … so I’ll use the spoiler method:

Though I would have loved it if all three could have gotten in, taking Matt over Lisa is a HUGE mistake. What the hell were people thinking? Did football fans make the difference? I’m still in shock. And to think Lisa made it this far after being rejected last year. Wow.
Never underestimate the dialing power of 12 year old girls. I think a lot of teenage girls voted for eye candy rather than talent. They almost did the same thing with what’shisface that sang “Walking in Memphis” last week.

It’s possible that Lisa may be back as a wild card but I don’t expect it. There are others who have been cut who are stronger than she is (Jennifer, Briana, even Scooter Girl). I was really glad to see Camile get through. She’s just sweeter than sugar. None of that annoying, self-conscious affectation that the others have.
Lisa got robbed. She did the best and deserves it more than Matt.
Camille is really beautiful, but she needs to lose the Mork-from-Ork wristband!

Lisa indeed got robbed! What was that? Did people get affected by Simon keep on saying she was fat? Total eye candy vote. I think Mr. Football will be the first one voted off in the Top 12

A vote for Matt was an eye candy vote? Man, I have to start wearing my glasses.

I think they’re saying Lisa got robbed because people don’t like the way she looks. She gave the best performance. I also happen to think she’s pretty hot, but I’ve never minded a few extra pounds on a woman who wears 'em well. Maybe some women like the big jock type. Nobody could really say he sang better than Lisa.
I don’t get the Matt love either but the TWOP boards are full of it. For some reason some women think he’s “cute.” Personally, every time I see him I think he’s going to knock the books out of my arms.

What the hell, though. Half the fun of AI is jeering the ones you hate. I think Matthew is this year’s Josh but not as obnoxious.

And frankly, Lisa wasn’t that good. She was ok but not great. Being in such a lousy group made her seem better than she really was.
I nearly fell off the couch when …checking time…the last finalist was announced! I liked that contestant all through the auditions and think that last night’s performance was good, tonight’s more exuberant repeat was even better. My take on the smarminess/smug factor is that it’s all about having been trained not to show pressure when in the spotlight, I don’t feel the arrogance at all.

I noticed Marisa’s weird stance, but I bet it looked a lot more odd to the judges than it did for us. With the multiple cameras, close-ups, audience shots and all, we see a very different picture than they do.

Lisa truly has talent, and makes me want to mentor her. She needs a ton of finishing, being big doesn’t mean sloppy is okay, hair product, vocal training to teach her better technique, toning would help her appearance and hopefully get her more in touch with her body and she’d move better, get the poor child some orthodontic work and by the time all that’s done she’ll be a bit more mature, she’ll be fabulous.

Well at least my top 3 made the top 3. I thought Lisa was the best of all three.
Camille still looks like a frightened child to me. Every time she says she thinks Simone is sexy, I wanna call child protective services.

I can’t believe Bre sang that song. I was glad to hear her say she wouldn’t have chosen it if she had the night to do over again. My fingers are crossed that she’ll return as a wild card.

I would hope she wasn’t trying to soften her image- she sang a ballady love song at her first audition, maybe she thought it would work for her again. I wonder if the people the contestants rehearse with coach them on song selection at all. While I like Norah Jones, that song was far too subdued. There was no opportunity to show her range and what more can you do but sway? Of course if Bre had done even that it would have been an improvement.
Ah well. Maybe I’ll move up to Klamath Falls and see if she wants some advice in person.

Oh well, at least The 8 Who Sucked week is over. I’m really looking forward to seeing Amy and the pen salesman next week.
