American Idol 2/22, Estrogen

A lot of people did Heat Wave, I just picked one. And I remembered Get Ready as the Temptations too, but when I double checked it, I got that other group I’d never heard of. I didn’t go back and check it again, (as I said before) I was on the phone. (Thank you Biggirl! I knew I wasn’t completely crazy!)

Yes, Tiffany did the original Could’ve Been, but Mandy Moore did a remake. (Tiffany’s version is probably better, I’ve not heard Mandy Moore’s, actually)

This is part of the reason I didn’t put down artists for some of the songs, most of them have been done by multiple artists.

Vonzell: Wow! She needs to learn how to dance but has a great voice. She oversang parts but overall she ends up in my top two (with Nadia).

Amanda: Terrible, rotten, horrid song; much better than the guy who sang this last night but she still missed some notes; blah.

Janay: Terrible, out of tune. She looked like she was in pain and moved like a mannequin.

Carrie: She was very lounge singer-ish to me; I don’t understand what everyone sees in her but this is the first time I’ve seen any of these contestants.

Sarah: She looks like a slutty Michelle Pfeiffer; boring performance.

Melinda: Horrifying. Also, she looked like she had just rolled out of bed. As Lucille Bluth would say, “I have just one word for you. Sleeves.”

Nadia: Best performance of the night–great voice, great look.

Celena: Extremely forgettable. Probably much better than what she demonstrated tonight. She reminds me of the hairdresser–Julie? Julia?–from Season Two.

Mikalah: Terrible–what was going on with her voice? Is that her real voice or was she goofing around? She looked and sounded like a bad Barbra Streisand impersonator on open mike night. Just awful.

Lindsey: So boring I changed the channel in the middle of her performance. The most boring performance of all 24 singers, hands down.

Jessica: Good voice, oversang it, terrible stage presence. Probably much better than that performance.

Aloha: Great voice, hokey performance.

I thought Nadia and Vonzell were head and shoulders above the rest.

Janay was easily the worst tonight. Sarah, Celena, and Lindsey were also at the bottom of the barrel tonight.

I haven’t watched much Idol this year (well none). But Nadia ROCKS… and Mickala, how did she get there? It’s like Fran Drescher singing up there… ugh!

Mikalah gives me the jim-jams. She seems to specialize in the most hackneyed aspects of cabaret and lounge. Even her pitter-patter is stolen, recycled. You don’t get that a sincere person is behind the whole act.

I’m tired of Constantine. The camera has loved him from the start and I can’t see why. His talent isn’t all that strong; his look is nowheresville. Perhaps it was the camera angle, but at times it appeared he wasn’t applauding some of the contestants.

How horrible am I that I read this as “I find myself wanting to do her well”? TWICE.

My friend says that Constantine looks like Andy Serkis. I think she hit the nail on the head.

I loved Vonzell and Nadia. I liked Aloha and Mikalah.

Re: Aloha’s outfit, empire-waisted dresses should never be cut above the knee. Blah.

Oh, I thought you were getting them from some sort of official site. I’m used to you young whippersnappers not knowing where the classics come from, but if it was coming from the actual Idol site, I was gonna send them a harshly worded e-mail!

Saying Linda Rondstadt say Heat Wave is like saying Michael Bolton sings When A Man Loves A Woman. True but oh, so wrong.

I voted a bunch of times for Nadia and Aloha tonight, Bo and Scott last night.

I’m behind the times with popular music – I stopped paying attention in the 70’s – so most of the songs these people are doing are new to me. I don’t compare them to other versions, so I cut 'em a lot of slack.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Beyonce perform. Is she as good as Aloha? Is it likely that Aloha’s borrowing from Beyonce, as Paula said?

AwSnappity got it right about her dress – it might have looked okay without the jacket. But probably not.

I wanted Vonzell to do better than she did, I really like her voice/personality.
Weird, V’s so skinny but it’s Amanda I wanna tie to a chair and force feed.

Loved Nadia, Sexy McSexovitch wow! Didn’t care for the song choice but loved the performance and adored her for f’ing owning it, contrasted with Janay who’s cute as a button and oversang the hell out of her song, straining and nasally and totally hiding her powerful voice under all that melisma. Yeah, it was probably nerves, but it was just painful to watch.

Hurray for Carrie! Beautiful and controlled and stage presence and great song choice and didn’t twang out, loved her to pieces tonight.

“Slutty Michelle Pfieffer” is perfect! Sarah was vibing Constantiney, making out visually with the camera, she seemed to be running out of air half the time.

I have no idea what Celena was doing, was that a country song she morphed into a ballad? Is she a frustrated alto afraid to try for the high notes? Utterly forgettable.

Lindsey reminded me of Julia too, prettier sounding voice but WTH was that lingerie she was wearing?!

Melinda had some really awkward phrasing going on, it kept jarring on my ears and sounding dumb, too much vibrato and Quit Pointing At Me, ick! It was like she was attacking the mic with her weird posture and the pointing thing, ugh.

I wanted to like Mikalah too, she’s making it tough though. Same with Aloha, that was a swing and a miss for me.

Good: Nadia, Carrie and Vonzell

Forgettable: Amanda, Janay, Jessica, Sarah, Lindsey

Bad: Celena, Aloha, Mikalah

You’re not the only one. I caught this one from the computer room and wondered who the hell was resurrecting Tiffany…

Agree on the best - totally disagree on the next two. >_<

Diff’rent strokes for diff’rent folks I suppose.

Anyone else notice that during the final recap they seem to show the favorites in a better light? The two that I noticed the most were Carrie (showed her nailing the money note) and Sarah (showed her with the about to cry look). I bet they can sway votes a little with those final shots.

As I was watching Mikalah, I couldn’t pick out who it was she reminded me of, and then it hit me: she’s the second coming of Taylor Dayne. I haven’t quite decided yet whether or not I like Mikalah, but I have a feeling she could end up coasting and being the Nikki McKibbin of this AI.

Nadia and Aloha get my vote. Carrie, too, because besides a good voice she’s got great breath control (yeah so I’m a nerd  ).

Sarah, Celena and Amanda were bummers.

Janay seemed completely terrified!

To me, Janay was channelling the vibrato of Carmen Rasmussen. Did anyone else get that vibe? Actually, she was like the scary demon child of Carmen and last season’s Jennifer Hudson–bad vibrato, scary bug eyes.

Only three were memorable:

Nadia (definite star quality)
Carrie
Aloha

The rest were boring boring boring - except Mikalah who was JUST terrible.

Nadia and Aloha for me, too.

They all could sing, but most of the songs they chose bored the holy bejesus out of me. I hate hate hate these souless, overwrought, relentlessly tedius, caterwauling sobfests. Yeeeesh.

…at least they all sing better than I spell. :smack:

i have a different perspective on this since i didn’t see it, but just heard it because i was in a diferent room than the tv.

I thought the blonde-countryish singer (from OK?) did the best…Carrie?? I think she’ll go down to the finals.

Nadia’s singing was rather flat sounding to me, but i guess she had a great performance.

That Mikalah, is she the 16 yr old from NJ?? Always mentioning peoples names? "Cmon Randy’ Sounds like a Vegas act…Oh, I hope she goes first.

I must be old too, because I know that “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” was originally Laura Branigans’s song.

In fact, I’m not sure how many originals Michael Bolton has done. But in any case, I’d say, just because his version of a song is more widely known than the original, that doesn’t make it un-doable.

Ethel Merman? Taylor Dayne? I was sure Mikalah was doing a Bette Midler impersonation, even down to the speech patterns. I hope she has more range than that, but at 16 maybe not.

I thought it was more of a Barbra Streisand than a Bette Midler.

Bette’s good though. I think she’s more like Fran Drescher but as I’m reading all these comparisons it suddenly occured to me…Ethel, Bette, Taylor, Fran, and Babs are all famous right? They were all successes so does that mean there’s a viable market for Mikalah?

Me, I hated Fantasia from the auditions last season and she won so whadda I know?
