Not in the semis. This is on the small stage. They don’t have room for group numbers. However, last year Ruben sang on the Wild Card results show. Mayhap they’ll bring back Fantasia for the last results show before the finals.
Anyway, all that moving around seemed like a playground game. “Red light! Constantine, stay where you are. Green light! Anwar and Joe, you’re both safe!” Next week, they’ll probably do Red Rover: whoever can break through the line gets to stay.
Jared was much better tonight than last night, but last night’s what counted.
Judd sucked both times.
I didn’t particularly like Melinda, but I felt bad for her, especially when Ryan was prodding her. Maybe it’s true that more exposure would have helped, but she just wasn’t good. LaToya and Jasmine didn’t get exposure before their semifinal rounds, and they got voted in anyway. Still, if she takes it this hard, perhaps it’s just as well.
Surprised about Sarah Mather; I thought it would be Janay. Not sure what was wrong with her performance, but I’m starting to think Simon may be right when he says the stunners don’t have a chance.
I’m telling you guys, Tivo is the only way to watch that damn show. An hour long, huh? After fast forwarding through all the commercials it was 25 freakin’ minutes! Ridiculous.
And could Melinda have possibly been bitchier? The hands on the hips thing was too much. Girl needs to learn a little something called “losing gracefully”.
And yeah, it appears as if they’re being far more brutal this year. It almost makes me uncomforatable to watch. All I can say is if I wake up to headlines about an X-AI contestant climbing the nearest bell-tower, I wouldn’t be all that suprised. I know it’s part of the show and all, but comon’. These people are human, unlike the producers, apparently.
Cricetus, I have to disagree about the premature tears. These contestants have been around eachother for months now, and an experience like this will bond people light years faster than normal. And of course the “that could be me’s” are probably adding to the tears a bit, understandably.
Hmmmpf, now that you mention it, I guess I remember that.
I don’t like it though!
Maybe the Sarah vs Janay thing touches on what Melinda was talking about. Janay had more screen time in the auditions, she was obviously more of a judge’s favorite than Sarah so even though Janay’s performance was arguably worse, Sarah was voted off. Makes sense to me anyway.
Just to be fair, Melinda wasn’t the one that did the hip thing. That was Sarah. But yeah, this is their last chance to exit gracefully (see Judd). Her whole body language just screamed sour grapes.
While I do think Sarah’s mannerisms during her final performance were immature, I think it’s dumb that the contestants are forced to sing the same song they’re getting voted off for singing. Why not let them choose? It wouldn’t be that difficult to get a list of songs from them ahead of time should they get voted off. Realistically, the band would still only have to know four songs (at this stage … one later on) because they could be clued in ahead of time as to who’s going home.
I feel sorry for Ryan during these long, drawn-out elimination shows. Obviously it’s not his idea to make the show an hour long. Yet he’s the one who has to not only break the bad news but be there to comfort the contestants.
It did seem harsher to me last night than in prevous years. What was with the “You’re out” bit? It used to at least be, “I’m sorry, but you’ve been eliminated,” or “I’m sorry, but you’re going home tonight.”
Those were some of the least graceful exits in the history of the show. Melinda looked like she immediately lapsed into a coma; I expected Seacrest to snap his fingers in front of her eyes…“hello? hello?” And Sarah had a “you thought I sucked last night…WATCH THIS!” vibe.
The way they jerked the contestants around was just cruel. You & you…stand here…ha! you’re safe. But you on the bench–OUTTA HERE! Psych!
I do not remember Janay at all and she sang pretty badly, yet I wanted her to stay. Maybe the air time thingy doesn’t work for me.
Poor Melinda! She was shocked and hurt and it showed. Sarah was defensive and it showed. Judd is almost 30 and that showed in his more graceful exit. I’ve seen worse exits. I’ve seen them crying so hard they could hardly get a note out of their constricted throats.
I’d give all the parting contestants a break. They all just got kicked out of what they believe to be their dream come true in a very cruel and public fashion. I give them all credit with being able to get the song out at all.
Yeah, I noticed it too. It started with that comment on either Monday or Tuesday night about how they’re going to draaaaag out the elimination show for an hour. I really get the sense that he thinks the producers are going a little over-the-top with some stuff and he wants the audience to know it’s not his idea. I hated him with a vengence last year, this year- not so much.
No, I’m talking about before the sing-out (which I think is a horrible thing to make these poor people do. Can you imagine having to sing right after you’re eliminated? It broke my heart when Jared couldn’t even finish his song because he was too choked up) Melinda just stood there with her hands on her hips. Sarah never had her hands on her hips, they were in her pockets when she was singing. I’m talking about Melinda, first girl eliminated. That girl didn’t look sad, she looked pissed. Made you not really feel too sorry for her. The hands on the hips thing just drove me nuts. I’ve never seen any other contestant do that before. Now I know why: it looks really bad. I could only imagine the diva-fit that must’ve gone on after the show.
Let me call attention to the great job the stylists have done on Private Pyle. They’ve taken him from anti-social, perhaps retarded ape-man who sings like an angel to properly belligerent b-boy. And they did it with some well-groomed 5 o’clock shadow, shades and a baseball cap.
Sorry, I just wanted to add that I do give Melinda props for calling the producers out on how some contestants are pimped out to the audience weeks in advance and others are hardly shown until the night of the vote. Think about it. We’ve had Savol and Constantine shoved down our throats for weeks. Didn’t even see Melinda or Jared (? did we see him?) until they performed, really. Paula looked a bit uncomforatable when she was saying that, I’m hoping it’s because she’s uncomforatable with it too. She seems to be the fairest of the judges. It’s about time someone called the producers on something so blatent and unfair.
For the most part they do - but they also get help from stylists if they want it. That’s how Clay Aiken went from dorky redhead in glasses to dorky redhead in contacts with highlights.
Well, that’s proof enough for me! Seriously, the meanness of people’s response to Scott baffles me. Ape boy? Retard? Sure, he was a little standoffish, but he’s never done anything mean or stupid.
Hey, I like the guy. But there’s no doubt he looks simian and down right creepy. Or looked creepy. Now, with the little make-over he just looks belligerent.
You didn’t think his behavior in the trios was, well, odd?
For me, I’m not a fan of his voice. Not that I think he’s a bad singer! I just prefer rough, deep voices. I don’t tend to get a lot of that from AI, which is why I’m such a spastic Bo supporter.
I think that the way they are doing the eliminations this year are cruel. I don’t know why they feel the need to make these people suffer so much. Yes, each of them will be upset about being out of the contest. I don’t think it’s bad that they have them sing after they are eliminated, it’s sort of like a pat on the back…you didn’t win, but you don’t suck like the crazy ass girl, Mary. Sing for us one more time, we’ll cheer you on.
I did agree with all of the eliminations, too. I didn’t think Judd was all that impressive.
Does anyone else think that Sarah’s attitude cost her as much as her singing?
Nah, it’s not proof at all, but I gotta say when I was talking with some cow-orkers before we started to learn the contestant’s names, each of them identified Scott as “the short-bus kid who can sing” or something similar. And the rest of us knew who they meant. Not that all mentally-challenged folk share similar characteristics or not is a whole other barrel of fish, but there it is. Was. (Now we know his name!)
I thought his behavior regarding the group assignment was rather mean, smart but mean. He had a whole ‘why practice with them, I don’t want to give any of the competition a leg up, screw those guys I’m here to make myself look good’ vibe going and while it’s certainly understandable, it was sucky. You were given an assignment to work together, do it.
The guy just skeeves me, his personal baggage about ‘Daddy didn’t love/support me’ in the first audition, his answering the interview questions about goals with ‘be a good father to my son/give my son a better life than I had’ just bug me. Every parent wants to do a good job, but what’s that got to do with ‘what are your goals as the American Idol’ exactly? It feels like he’s playing every sympathy card he can think of, even his transformation into thug-lite makes me roll my eyes. He isn’t borrowing the 'tude, that belligerance is genuine, he seems to really think his royal poop doesn’t stink and that’s not an appealing attitude for any contestant.
