American idol 3/23 to 3/24

I find it interesting how different everyones views are of the contestants. It makes it hard to predict what will happen.

My faves:
Jacob (i love him to pieces and jump for joy everytime he sings)
James
Casey (although i’d like to see him do something different…seriously)

Beat it:
Paul (i cant STAND his weasly face… he was better last night because he had to hold his guitar but he looked sad that he couldnt do his dumb little dance)
Haley
Thia Magea (when she sings, she sounds like she doesnt really speak english)

Just whatever:
Stefano ( i really like Stefano but he just isnt wowing me)
Pia (the girl may have the best voice in the competition but she still bores me)
Scotty
Naima (i love her and think she’s super cool…but I just dont think she has the pipes)
Lauren
Regardless of any of that, I predict that Haley, Thia and Naima will be in the bottom and that Haley will finally go.

Meh. I don’t really care about any of them and am watching the show just out of idle curiosity as to which fem-bot eventually gets crowned Queen. (though I still love Jacob and Naima)…I thought Jennifer Lopez looked just beautiful in previous weeks with red lipstick. She looked so pretty I hardly recognized her. Now she’s back to the beige shiny lips, and probably there are big hoop earrings under that bushel of extensions. All she needs is a wad of gum to chomp on and she’s good to go.

So that’s Sugarland, huh? I don’t like it.

Casey seems awfully phony right now.

I’m watching basketball–who went home?

Nobody.

Well, that was interesting. My guess is that people thought Casey was safe, and didn’t “waste” their votes on him. I am just glad my sweet baboo Paul made it through.

I wonder who painted the portrait of Steven Tyler. My google fu is weak. I can’t find out who it is.

I actually predicted the entire bottom three to my family before the show started tonight, and predicted that Casey would be the one voted off, AND that they’d save him.

This is the way I saw it -

Stefano was going to the bottom three because he sucked. His phrasing was all wrong, and it looked like he was trying to kill the audience with that song. It was just bad all around, even though he hit the notes.

Thia was going to the bottom three because, even though she’s a good singer, she’s one of those singers that doesn’t inspire anyone to really love her. She’s bland, she’s forgettable, and she’s not a sex symbol. She was better than a couple of the other girls, but they were more memorable because of their looks or attitude.

Casey was going to the bottom three because honestly it was a mediocre performance, and I think the way he growls everything is getting old. He’s starting to look like a one-trick pony with a not-very-good voice. That, and his aggressive mannerisms and constant mugging for the camera made him fodder for elimination tonight.

Furthermore, I don’t think they should have saved him, because I don’t think he’s going to last much longer anyway. I predict he brings out the upright bass again next week, because the only ‘moments’ he’s had on this show were those performances where he stripped back the song and performed with his bass. That’ll get him through a week or two, but in the end I don’t think he’s got the versatility to make it to the end.

I wonder if he’s got more musical chops hidden away that we haven’t seen yet. I was baffled by Randy’s comment a few weeks ago about how he was the best pure musician the show has ever had - Casey James showed a lot of musicianship last year - a lot more than what we’ve seen from this Casey so far. So maybe he’s got more in reserve that he was holding back for later rounds and just blew his timing on when to bring out the big guns. If he doesn’t, then Randy needs to get some perspective.

As for last night, I thought James was the best, followed by Pia on sheer vocal ability and Jacob. And honestly, I think that’s your final 3 for American Idol this year unless someone else really steps it up.

The rest of them are increasingly becoming forgettable. Paul was better last night than he was the week before, and if he keeps performing like that he should last a few more rounds. I think Haley and Stefano are real wild cards - both of them have the ability to drag out a really good performance with the right material, but they both have the ability to fall flat on their faces, too.

Naima was saved tonight by the fact that the theme was right in her wheelhouse. But I predict another trainwreck from her in the coming week or two. Lauren is probably the weakest of all the female singers, and isn’t long for this show. Scotty will probably stick around because he stays right in his comfort zone and that’s a zone that a lot of middle America likes, even if it gives me heartburn.

Next week I think two have to be voted off because of the save this week. That’s really dangerous, because it’s easy for a great singer to land in the bottom three in a week when the votes are close. Casey’s save could wind up killing someone like Pia or James if they have a bad week.

Anyway, the show was pretty entertaining tonight. Lots of twists and cameos. And that thing with Casey at the end was really weird. If that wasn’t an act on his part, then he’s a pretty unstable little dude. After hearing that he’s been hospitalized twice already during the show (once requiring a full blood transfusion), I had images of blood rushing out of his nose and mouth there for a minute when he kept putting his hands to his mouth and then looking at them, like he was checking to see if he was bleeding. Very strange. And it looked like he came close to passing out.

I don’t get the Top 11 save either. Weird.

Sugarland singer’s closet barfed on her in all the wrong colors.

Fun show, though.

Overall, the top 12 has been disappointing, IMO. The talent level seemed so high during auditions, but it hasn’t really translated to a very strong Top 12.

Yep.

Oh great, Scotty will be going on tour. Now WRAL will never shut up about him.

Yeah, that sort of puts your finger on what I’ve been thinking. Maybe they haven’t hit their stride yet, but seriously, people, this is IT! This is the competition - time to bring it! Maybe they were holding out for the Top 10 to start really showing their stuff, but it seems more likely that we’ve seen all the gears they’ve got.

I wonder if this isn’t the result of Simon Cowell leaving, coupled with the change in producers/musical advisors etc.

I like Steven Tyler, but he seems awfully soft. He never has a bad word to say about anyone. I think it’s possible that they just let in too many singers with decent voices and not much else. Simon was much harsher on people who didn’t bring something special to a performance. He’d say it was Karaoke, or ‘Pageanty’ or whatever. If that translated into him cutting a lot of singers like Lauren and Thia during the Hollywood week, then maybe that helped bring more personality to the show.

It’s going to be interesting this year to see what the competition to American Idol brings to the table. We’ve got ‘The Voice’ coming up soon, and “X Factor” in the fall. That’ll be good, because American Idol is kind of in a rut and getting a little lazy, I think. The fact that they still don’t have their audio problems ironed out is telling - the show is consistently the worst-sounding HD show we watch. That’s inexcusable for a show focused on music.

Rock Band Supernova was more entertaining and better produced than American Idol on just about every level. It had a better band (a killer band), better performers, more interesting judges, and better audio. And that show was done on probably a quarter of AI’s budget. The only reason that show wasn’t a big hit was because it was just a little too ‘out there’ for mainstream America. When your host is a tatted-up guitarist for Jane’s Addiction and the judges include people from Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue and Metallica, you know you’re limiting your audience.

If you’re bored by this year’s performers, and bored on a Saturday afternoon, check out a couple of these videos:

Magni - The Dolphin’s Cry

Ryan Star - Losing My Religion

Storm Large - Wish You Were Here - And listen to the band on that one.

Storm Large - Suffragette City - Now THAT’s a stage performance. Bonus for Dave Navarro on guitar. The whole thing just rocks. But for the purpose of this discussion, notice how much better the band is, the stage lighting is, the camera work is, the editing is, the sound mix is… It makes American Idol look flat and lifeless. And this was also shown live, so the producers of AI have no excuse there.

Magni - Fire - Added mainly because the band blows the roof off the dump. We’ve never heard anything with this kind of intensity on AI.

Josh Logan - She Talks to Angels

Zarya Alvarez - Everybody Hurts - The vocals are a bit off in a couple of spots, but the female singers on this year’s AI could learn a bit from her about how to deliver emotion in a song without having to jump around on stage. She does the same thing on I’m not an Addict.

Dana Andrews was one of the weak contestants on the show, but she still did a performance of “I’m the Only One” that blew away the one performed on AI this year: Dana Andrews - I’m the Only One
I wonder if the higher quality of the contestants has something to do with the fact that they all had to submit auditions tapes? No ‘nationwide auditions’ where people get 20 seconds to show what kind of artist they are - It was a real talent hunt where producers talked to music people, asked about undiscovered talent, asked agents to send in audition tapes from their best unsigned acts, etc. Real effort went into picking those people.

American Idol does some of that, sneaking ringers into the competition while pretending their just shlubs auditioning with the masses. Maybe that’s what went wrong this year - maybe they didn’t do that. In past years, some of the best contestants have been people who were already established in the music industry but were just currently unsigned and relatively unknown so they could sneak onto AI.

It’s Saturday night, and I just got to watch this week’s shows (Motown). Perhaps this has been discussed before, but is there something funky going on with the sound? I had a hard time hearing the singers over the band and the back-up group. Is the balance not correct? I thought it was just me, but my kids were watching with me and they all said the same thing. Anyone else notice this?

I agree something seems off with the sound. I feel like I’m not hearing what the judges are hearing - at all. The reactions of the judges and the audience do not reflect what I’m hearing, so I have to assume that if a song sounds mediocre to me, but everyone else is loving it, we the TV viewers are missing something.

Well, I love Casey and I’m glad he got to stay. He is the only artist whose album I would actually buy - except Scotty, if he puts out a country album I’ll buy it because his voice is amazing and he’s adorable. James is incredibly talented but I don’t think last night was his best performance.

The women bore the shit out of me. I kind of like that little blond girl, Haley.

I don’t care if an artist doesn’t have much ‘‘range.’’ Some people are just born to do a certain thing. Scotty was born to be a country singer. I’m okay with the fact that he sounds ridiculous doing motown. Casey was born to do jazz and be weird and screechy. I love his personality and hope he stays in the game for a long time to come.

Thank you for this. RockSTAR (not Band…I make that same mistake all the time, too) was awesome. Their house band was KILLER. I miss it.
