I don’t think they’re allowed to. They have a songbook they have to choose their songs from. You can’t really fault them for that.
I find it fascinating how subjective this is. In this thread alone one person will say how much they love Nikko and another will say how he’s a horrible singer. I understand personal preference but damn. There are a lot of singers out there that I personally don’t enjoy listening to (Celine Dion for example) but I would never say the woman couldn’t sing. Of course she can sing. I just don’t particularly enjoy listening to her.
I agree that Carrie’s “X-factor” is pure marketability. I watched an E True Hollywood Story on Simon and about 90% of the acts he produced were pure money machines. We’re talking total candy-pop. The man isn’t interested in musical talent or originality, he’s interested in dollar signs. Nothing wrong with that, except when he tries to act like he’s trying to find the most talented musican. He’s not looking for a talented musican, he’s looking for something he can package up neatly and sell to millions of teeny-boppers. Knowing that, it’s not shocking how much he’s been pimping Carrie and I think he’ll be pimping Constantine a lot more in the upcoming weeks.
Bo Bice—His song choice was no surprise and neither was his great performance. A joy to watchm despite how I feel about the song.
Jessica–She certainly can sing, but I wasn’t too impressed. Simon is right, she is forgetable.
Anwar–Holy balls! That was excellent! At least the ending was! Yes, his lower register is certainly problmatic, but Klo had the same problem and she came in third. Yes, I know that doesn’t mean won, but that isn’t the point. He saved himself. Good to know!
Nadia–HEE! Loved it! Well done!
ConstantBLEAGH–OH! NO! YOU! DIDN’T! Killed a great song! AAAARRGRHT!!(E$J)Jdsjcdfeknmf]]
Nikko–Color me impressed! Excellent performance!
Anthony–Much better than in previous weeks. Well done!
Carrie–She was better last week, but still solid as always.
Scott–YRGH! Horrible! I cringed the whole time! AIEEE! BLEAGH.
Vonzell–Took a kiss of death song and made it alive! Dare I say it? It was better than Trenyce’s version. Superior.
It seems that the SDMB has been a bellweather of the nation, an Ohio of Idol. Whoever most people seem to want/predict is going home, goes home.
If this holds up, Scott is going home. If so, I wonder if it’s more the bad singing, or more the thinly veiled surliness that has made America not love him?
I have to admit I’m really enjoying this year. I watched from about 10 contestants in last year. The years before I’d catch a show here and there. I remember wondering why the hell that Jon with red hair was there. Every time I saw him in clips or where ever he was *terrible]/i] but he never went away. The year I watched there was that girl from the tropics-- gah! But she kept going and going. . .
This year the competition is tough and if you falter you are out. And there are no people as bad as redhead Jon and Tropical Girl.
Of course I’ll change my mind of either Nadia or Vonzell goes.
Sorry to change the subject, but I was just thinking about the first season and how there were *two * hosts originally (we’re already on the fourth season?! It seems like American idol has sped by).
Who was the other host again? And why did he leave?
IIRC, word on the street at the time was that he and Ryan did not get along and the producers or the public - someone - liked Ryan better than Brian. There was some sort of falling out, if what I heard is true. Brian wasn’t asked to return for season 2.
I really don’t understand that, either. She’s not the best singer in the competition but she’s better than Scott - and IMO Nikko and Constantine. She was awesome last night and she should not have been in the bottom three.
jsgoddess, I agree with you about Anwar. He always sounds flat to me too now.
I wonder if Anwar and Nadia’s fans might skew a little older…towards people who are less likely to vote. My wife is rooting for Anwar but she never picks up the phone. Maybe this will light a fire under the Anwar and Nadia supporters.
Hmmm…maybe I’m reading too much into this, but I’m going to guess that Jessica wasn’t very well-liked amongst the rest of the top 10. I didn’t see one tear shed for her (and some of the girls generally turn on some major water works on cut night).
