American Idol 3/29-30

I never vote but my daughter does. I like watching and I’m not about to start power voting so whether I cast one vote or not is not going to make a bit of difference.

I’m a Democrat, can you tell?

I wouldn’t call Anwar cute. He’s really beautiful, but he’s also very understated and seems quite mature.

Con is “dangerous.” He doesn’t give off a staid, mature vibe but a fun, risk-taking one.

I am.
Because he can sing. He’s a little lacking in the personality dept. But this is a talent competition.

Scott definitely can sing, though his voice really isn’t the type that I tend to prefer. I like weird, rough-edged voices in general.

So I’m not a huge Scott fan, though I’m not rooting against him. I thought that he and Anwar were the worst last night by a loooong way. It was the first really bad performance by Scott, I thought, and it still was better than the weird atunal Anwar. (It still hurts me to say that because I love to gaze upon Anwar.)

Yes, Nadia sounded great last night, on a song anyone can and does sing just as well at every dive bar in town. I love her, but she just hasn’t shown she’s got the range to compete much further.

I think the waterworks are a contagious thing, and since Jess usually leads the pack, there was a marked lack tonight. I liked her voice, but can’t think of a single distinctive thing about the girl, skunky extensions notwithstanding. Nadia’s got 'tude and she’s sexy, Carrie’s gorgeous and a consistent performer, Vonzell’s hyper and giggly and cute…Jess was…the other blonde? Somehow, she didn’t distinguish herself, that’s my guess. Others had worse performances last night, but for whatever reason they’ve got more fans voting.

Scott bugs me, and I’m sorry, but once they get to this point they’re all getting equal amounts of coaching. Bummer Daddy didn’t believe in you, but so what? Scott couldn’t have joined a church with an impressive choir and learned? Daddy keep him from being in high school chorus and getting taught?

If he showed even one tenth the passion during his performances that he does praying and pleading and contorting dramatically during the results recap, he might have a shot.

In each performance that I’ve seen of his, I’ve noticed a few notes that didn’t sound perfect, too. Still, Anwar has the only voice in the competition that I really love. It’s warm, it resonates and it sounds like there’s somebody actually home behind it.

I’m sad about Jessica leaving. I liked her. I’m astounded that Scott’s still in. He’d better bring it next week.

Mr. Rilch says it’s like Justice League of America, or the X-Men, or any team of superheroes. Everyone has to be an individual; you can’t have two people with the same, or even similar, powers. Can’t have The Thing and The Hulk in the same group, for instance.

So what do we have here? Bo is the Southern-fried rocker. Constantine is shrewd enough to realize that he can’t out-rock Bo, so he’s falling back on his musical-theater style. Nikko is the R&B guy. Anthony is the boy-band heartthrob. Anwar is the crooner. Nadia is the big-voiced diva.

And Carrie and Jessica were the blonde girls, and Carrie knows how to play the country sweetheart role to the hilt. And make me slightly nauseous, but a lot of people seem to be falling for it. I don’t agree with Simon when he said Jessica wasn’t likeable, but if he meant that she doesn’t have the middle-America appeal that Carrie does, he was spot-on. She didn’t have her own niche, so she’s gone.

So who does that leave, at this point? Vonzell and Scott. Vonzell is another big-voiced diva, and Scott is…I don’t know how to classify him. If they don’t find some way to distinguish themselves, they’ll be the next to fall through the cracks.

Now as far as Carrie’s stoneface during Jessica’s singout. Mr. Rilch says that’s because she knows the same thing could happen to her. I say it’s because someone who could have been a threat is now out of her way. Or it could be what Queen Tonya said.

Oh, and Biggirl, the redhead was John. Jon Peter Lewis was HobbitBoy.

Except for Nadia has been in the bottom 3 the past two weeks, Vonzell has been safe. My guess is because Vonzell is stealing the diva-vote away from Nadia. Which is understandable. Vonzell is a much better singer than Nadia and she’s a fun performer, too. I’m saying this as both a Nadia and Vonzell fan.

I totally agree with your husband about the superhero thing. I was actually thinking the same thing during the group sing. Not about super-heros because I’m not that creative, but just that they all sounded very distinctive. Except for Scott and Anthony and Carrie and Jessica.

Sucks, too. I really liked Jessica. I did notice though, that she didn’t have her own niche, which everyone else seems to have.

And I totally agree Carrie’s stoneface was a result of her realizing she’s not untouchable. Her and Jessica had very similar styles, it’s quite possible there aren’t as many fans of that style as there are of others.

I’ve just now watched Tuesday’s performances and I’ve got to comment on this. I apologize in advance for being crude.

At the end her performance, as she hits the last note, the camera is in close on **Vonzell’s ** face and she’s looking at the camera like she’s f*cking it. And really, REALLY liking it!

I rewatched that part about five times.
As for the remaining contestants:

**Anwar’s ** voice just doesn’t sound very good to me, even when he’s hitting the right notes. I don’t like the quality of his voice. He sounds too nasal and whiney. That goes double for Nikko. When **Scott ** is good, his voice is more pleasant than either Anwar or Nikko. But Scott’s not good very often and I would have expected him to be gone before now. I am lumping these three guys together because they all sing with an R&B style.

**Anthony ** is a decent singer, but he’s uninteresting.

**Nadia ** is an interesting performer, but her vocal range is too small.

I, like everyone else, am surprised to find myself not hating **Constantine ** so much anymore. I think his voice has sounded MUCH better in the last two rounds, and he’s picking good songs. I thought his original audition sucked and I was shocked they put him through to Hollywood. Now, he’s a dark horse candidate to win this thing.

**Vonzell ** is also one who’s shown marked improvement. Her voice is good, but not really all that powerful, which I thought showed in some parts of that Whitney song. She made up for it, though, with a lot of personality in her performance (see above), and she’s very attractive. She’s got a good shot at winning.

**Bo ** is clearly the most polished of the group. His vocals are always great–in key and with plenty of character–and he’s a seasoned performer. I didn’t care for his song choice this week–for me a little Black Crows goes a looooong way and Constantine gave us an earful a couple of weeks ago. (I know, I know, the Black Crows’ “Hard to Handle” is a cover.) Still, Bo is the man to beat.

**Carrie ** is the woman to beat. She’s got the best voice of any of them. She’s got plenty of power in her vocals and she’s got a nice, pure tone. I agree with Simon that Carrie should win this thing. She’s got the most commercial potential. She’s very attractive and, I think, her voice is versatile. I worry, though, that she’s pidgeon-holing herself with all the country songs and that could work against her as the number of contestants decreases.

All three of the past AI winners–Kelly, Ruben, and Fantasia, were R&B style singers. That bodes well for Vonzell, but I really hope that we break that trend this time and either Carrie or Bo wins it.

Well put. Of all the contestants, Anwar is the one most likely to record music that I would be thrilled to listen to. He connects to his songs and that’s what makes the listener connect to them. The rough spots get worked out in the recording studio.

Nikko has a lot of potential, but his style is not immediately accessible. The more you listen to him, the better he sounds. A lot of people perceive him as being off-key or flat, which is he not, except for a note here and there. If one can get into Nikko’s groove and stop expecting him to be what he is not, he’s a joy.

It would be interesting to hear some of Bo’s original stuff. He belongs with a band, but the only way the band will make it long-term is if they have some original material.

Dang. I batted zero on that one. I must remember to factor in the Grandma vote (for Anthony), the baseball fan vote (for Nikko), and the not-gonna-touch-this-one vote (for Scott) for the next few weeks.

According to the Smoking Gun ( link )

I guess what Scott has been praying for was that no one would find out about this. I don’t think Fox will let him stay in the competition.

Yeah, that’s why they kicked Corey (can’t remember his last name) out in season 2 (I think it was).

Interesting…

Interesting indeed. If they deep-six him on account of this, it would appear that their (Fox’s) choices would be to shorten the season by a week, or to invite Jessica back. Given how off my predictions for Wednesday’s results show were, I’m not going to make one now.

Anybody else care to try?

That is interesting.

I can’t find a single new source that is covering this story yet. Yes, things are definitely going to get interesting. If Scott didn’t disclose his arrest to Idol ahead of time, he’s gone. If he did disclose, I’m really surprised they let him compete. If he’s allowed to stay in, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear booing when he takes the stage. And I’m absolutely certain he’ll be voted off.

I thought Idol would have learned by now to check people out on their own instead of trusting that they would disclose all.

Why would you expect them to operate differently than anybody else on FOX?
