Whoever gets bumped tonight sings better than Dolly.
Dolly sounded like she had trouble breathing. I wonder if she’d sound better if she was wearing looser clothing.
I got about 30 seconds into it and it was so painful I had to ffw the rest. The singer made me want to break things.
Dolly hit an awful lot of bad notes, and what the hell kind of glurgy crap song was that!? Did not like.
I told Dominic at the beginning who I thought was going home. I was right.
(Edited because somehow I tabbed into the “Title” part and typed some punctuation there. I was wondering why it didn’t show up in the post…)
Does anyone want to spoil the bottom 3 and the one who got the boot for me?
Brooke, Kristy and Ramiele were the bottom 3, with Brooke going back to the couch first. Rami got the boot, leaving Kristy safely ensconced in her normal bottom two spot.
Hey, my first spoiler, yay me!
Bottom 3; Ramiele, Brooke and Kristy Lee. Voted off the island: Ramiele
I agree that Dolly sounded breathless, but she still radiates benevolence. Her breathlessness might have been because her dress was too tight. Or perhaps she’s out of her element a bit and nervous. Or maybe it’s because she’s 62.
I can’t wait til “Idol Gives Back” is done so we can quit hearing about it.* I hope they learned from last year’s mistakes and do a better job this year.
*Though I’m glad the little Ethiopian girl found her sister. I’m not completely heartless.
ETA: Damn you, Queen Tonya, for beating me to the punch.
I really dug them. Not as much when I watched it a second time, but I still really liked it. I’d be interested in hearing more of their music.
What do you think of them?
I wholeheartedly agree. But, points to Brooke for throwing in the self-aware reality check when Ryan asked about the excessive emoting. Either she’s savvy enough to have thought she should say it, in which case bully for her on her superior gaming skills, or it was sincere and a welcome change from the usual self-centered contestant drama.
Hee!
I think the Clark brothers are fantastic. But there’s something about the audio on American Idol - they need to fire their sound man. Because the Clark Brothers sounded much better on NGAB. Their instruments were kind of muddied together in the sound mix tonight, and the volume of the instruments was wrong in spots - the mandolin in particular was dropped way down during the solo.
If you want to see some highlights of the Clark Brothers on Next Great American Band, here are some Youtube links:
Gimme Shelter (The Rolling Stones) This is a fantastic version of this song - and I’ve never seen an electric flying ‘V’ dobro before…
Saved (Lieber and Stoller)
You’re in my Heart (Rod Stewart)
Maggie’s Farm (Bob Dylan). Also “Billy the Kid”, their own song.
I thought it was some kind of horrible April Fool’s Day joke. I sat there mouth agape wondering WTF these people were and WTF they were doing there. I asked my wife to hit the fast forward button on the DVR remote, but she was frozen solid, her face locked in a rictus of terror. Seriously, “This Little Light Of Mine?” Within seconds I was longing for the worldly cynicism of the Jonas Brothers. Yeegads.
No surprise on the boot. I wasn’t surprised to see Brooke get the scare spot either. She should be safe for a few weeks now though.
What did she say? Something about Jesus and gravity?
Brooke does that thing with her bottom lip – or maybe it’s her top lip – or both lips. Anyway, I think it always looks phony, no matter who does it. It’s like she’s trying to hold her emotions in check. Trouble is, I don’t think she has any (emotions).
I’m sorry to see Ramelie go. She was a sweet kid.
Watching Ramiele’s performance last night, I think she wanted to go. I think she had given up already, and just wanted it over.
And I am once again listening to David Cook’s “Billie Jean.”
Anyone else noticed that Ramiele’s family looked kinda sad, but actually looked more shocked that anything else? I think they thought they had the numbers. I thought so too after she avoided the bottom three all together last week.
Also, we got to catch up with former idols! I took the opportunity to get a glass of water. I literally lol’d and shouted “BATBOY!” from the kitchen when I saw ol’ Phil though.
I didn’t notice it with the Clark Brothers, but I have been wondering if it was just me or the sound wasn’t that great. It didn’t do well with Ramiel’s voice.
They’d announced the bottom three and they were all standing there sobbing and clutching each other, then Ry sends them back to the couches to prolong the torture.
Big pitch for Idol Cares, including the heart-wrenching homeless Ethiopian sisters video, then Dolly sings a song about not getting to full of yourself and proud of all your wonderfulness and accomplishments; “gravity” equalling a reality check and knocking you back to your “knees” meaning praying to Jesus.
The three girls are called back up and they’re all crying, Brooke looked like she was the worse off. Rami had tears just dripping off her face, but in that beautiful non face wrinkling way, Kristy was doing a stone-faced trying for control thing, Brooke looked like she’d just been told her dog died, completely red-nosed and brow furrowed. Ry asks about why she’s so upset and she gabbered something like “We put so much of ourselves into this, we have to give everything to try and do our best and it takes a toll… but then you see the video of the little girls living in violence on the streets and realize how wacked your perspective is and then Dolly sings wonderfully about Jesus and being humble and she’s so right and it’s all overwhelming.”
I’m paraphrasing of course, but it was something to that effect, acknowledging being upset about possibly being kicked off and also being self-aware of how meaningless AI is compared to reality with a smidge of Christian guilt thrown in.
Did anyone else notice how many of the contestants were crying when they finished the charity segment? Carly was taking tissue to mop her face from either Syesha or Michael and handing them over to David Cook who was crying too. They’re all wrought up on elimination night regardless, so the big manipulative video just slayed them.
I waited and waited through all the crap just to see Dolly perform. I had to explain to my husband, who doesn’t “get” Dolly, that she used to be better than that, and then about halfway through the song, the picture froze up. Does that happen to y’all? I suppose it’s a satellite problem or something, but it happens during every episode of Idol. At that point, I said fuck it. Grrrr!
I’d like to begin by saying how very, very happy I am about David Cook’s haircut!!
I’m a bit late catching up on AI this week - I watched most of the performances on You Tube yesterday right before the results show - but I was actually pleasantly surprised by the performances. I liked David C, Jason, Michael, and Brooke; didn’t care for Carly or David A; didn’t watch the others. I think maybe I liked what I heard because I’d never heard any of those songs before, and therefore didn’t come to them with any expectations. I didn’t know Dolly’s songs were so Jesus-y, and frankly, I just can’t buy Jason singing about religious stuff. And I really thought David A’s song wasn’t great for him at all, no matter what Simon says. It sounded like and old person’s nostalgia song, not something to be sung by a 17 year old.
I can’t say I feel too strongly one way or the other about Ramiele being sent home. She’s entertaining when she talks, but not so much when she sings, although her voice is beautiful.
Dolly’s performance left me confused about the magnitude and enthusiasm of her fanbase.
They also know the cameras are on them. They know they can’t appear to be indifferent or bored. They’re all just performing. I don’t buy a second of it. Brooke is the biggest phony of all, IMO. Her whole spiel last night looked completely calculated and self-serving to me. I know I can’t prove it, but I just sense something really false about that chick. She uses this angelic schtick of hers as a strategy to deflect criticism. I bet she’s a monster when the cameras are off.
Dolly is usually much better than that, both in terms of performance and material. She’s really a good songwriter but you wouldn’t know it from that thing last night. She usually sings on key too and she has a very warm, likeable stage presence. Last night she just didn’t have any of what makes her popular. Maybe it was lack of rehearsal, maybe age is catching up with her, but that was not representative of her usual quality of performance. She’s usually very engaging, and I say that as someone who loathes country music.
(emphasis mine)
Naw, she’s just dead inside. The whole “note” bit about “Kristy’s seat” with Ryan was really awkward and strange. It would have made more sense (but be no less  ) if she had put the note down on the seat before she walked up to Ryan, forcing him to ask what that was about. The whole thing was just a stupid play for sympathy and it seemed to me that it pissed Ryan off.
She’s gone next week, unless she manages to find another glurgey pandering-to-middle-America song and knocks it out of the park.
