American Idol 4/1-4/2 *Open spoilers*

Did it look to anyone else like Kristy was about to make out with Ramiele when she got das boot?

My husband rewound the DVR about 20 times. He’s gross.

I think the Clark brothers are fantastic. But there’s something about the audio on American Idol - they need to fire their sound man. Because the Clark Brothers sounded much better on NGAB. Their instruments were kind of muddied together in the sound mix tonight, and the volume of the instruments was wrong in spots - the mandolin in particular was dropped way down during the solo.

If you want to see some highlights of the Clark Brothers on Next Great American Band, here are some Youtube links:

Gimme Shelter (The Rolling Stones) This is a fantastic version of this song - and I’ve never seen an electric flying ‘V’ dobro before…

Saved (Lieber and Stoller)

You’re in my Heart (Rod Stewart)

Maggie’s Farm (Bob Dylan). Also “Billy the Kid”, their own song.
Perhaps not surprising, but I completely disagree with you.

Gimme Shelter was just yelling and screeching guitar. I couldn’t even listen to Saved more than halfway through. They utterly destroyed ‘You’re in My Heart’. Lifeless, dreary, boring, tragic. Horrible. I didn’t bother with the last one because I simply couldn’t take any more. These guys SUCK.

As for last night’s bootee – YAY!!! Couldn’t stand her from the beginning and I’m glad she’s finally off my tv.

I thought Carly and David Cook were the best, and I finally threw a few votes in for them Tuesday night. I’m rooting for them to be the top 2.

I thought Michael Johns was ok, but the faces he makes are hideous. He needs to stop scrunching up his face and looking pained.

Everyone else; middle of the pack.

Oh, except Dolly, who also sucked last night. Good lord. Well, at least she was having fun with it!
Dolly’s performance left me confused about the magnitude and enthusiasm of her fanbase.
Me too, although I’ll cut her some slack, as she is 62 years old(!).

I’m gonna have to go with “uh, no?”
I think it’s just your husband.

And I agree with Shayna about Michael Johns’ faces. He does that weird thing with his mouth where it makes the shape of Beaker’s mouth. Looks icky.

Right before Ryan announced, my boyfriend (who detests most tv and is slightly scandalized that I watch AI at all, but happened to be home when he’s normally working so was unwillingly witnessing the show) looks up and says “The blonde one’s boobs are taller than the other girl’s head!”

Then when they went for the immediate hug (which he doesn’t realize is obligatory and always happens) he went into total Generic Guy moment, all hubba-hubba maybe this show is worth watching after all, omg her face is all up in the boobs!

We laughed.
Naw, she’s just dead inside. The whole “note” bit about “Kristy’s seat” with Ryan was really awkward and strange. It would have made more sense (but be no less  ) if she had put the note down on the seat before she walked up to Ryan, forcing him to ask what that was about. The whole thing was just a stupid play for sympathy and it seemed to me that it pissed Ryan off.
I think there was a controversy in a past season where a contestant saw the card and knew they were leaving beforehand. I didn’t see it so I don’t know the details.
Ryan was probably annoyed because he had to make sure it was clear that that wasn’t happening this time. Well that and probably thinking her antics were stupid.
Dolly is usually much better than that, both in terms of performance and material.
I’ve seen her in concert three times; twice she was absolutely fantastic, the third time she was lackluster and seemed tired and “fakin’ it” like she did last night. I think she’s probably pushing herself too hard for a 62 year old who’s had their intestines removed and is more botox than human in some regions.
What is the housing situation for the Idols? Do the Idols give them a housing allowance or supply hotel rooms or furnish one great big house for them all or what exactly? Also, does anybody know if Idol pays for the contestants family & friends to attend the show? It would seem to get awfully expensive otherwise for a family of modest means to fly cross-country to L.A. each week.

The housing situation has changed a few times. There used to be a big Idol house they all shared, but earlier this season they mentioned sharing apartments. Presumably all in one complex, to make it easier for transportation.

I wonder if they’re condensing as people get tossed. Like, Amanda and Brooke were roommates and so were Ramiele and Kristy, lets say. Is there a weekly move to keep folks with a roommate or are more of them hanging out singly now?

I quite liked the big mansion they shared the first few seasons. I remember that they showed some of the contestants in their apartments the year Carrie Underwood won. Also, she once was talking in an interview about how her roommate was always the one to get kicked off, which implied to me that they condense roommates as time goes on. She listed who they were or something.

I noticed that the bottom three said they were roomies. That would mean, presumably, that Carly & Syesha are rooming together. Then David Cook said sorry to his roommates Jason & Michael. So my best guess would be David A. is staying with a parent in their own room. In an earlier season I know that I read underage contestants can bring a parent along.

I’ve read that family can come to the performances for free, but they have to get there on their own. So people like Kat McPhee, who live nearby, are at an advantage in that way.

Thanks for the info on housing; I thought there was an Idol Mansion at one time. (I was always surprised they didn’t do a “Real World” type spin-off of it, which divorcing any notions of banality would probably be a ratings hit.)
ETA: On an unrelated note, anybody notice that during the group sings David Cook seems “as out of place as a Presbyterian in Hell”* while David Arch. seems like he’s completely in his element?

*A Mark Twain quote, not a religious judgment

For me, David C. seems uncomfortable generally as though concerned that he might win. I don’t think he wants to be molded. David A. I’m more worried about, given his dad’s neurosis. I’m not confident that even when he turns 18 he’ll be able to walk away from that heavy handed influence. I doubt he’s ever been allowed to date.

I would actually like to see that, and I’m no fan of reality shows.

That’s because David Cook owns that stage - he doesn’t like the other guys scuffing it up on him. Which, by the way, seems like a perfect attitude for a rockstar.

After spending entirely too much time on YouTube and iTunes looking at Idol performances (what?) I wish to now officially retract every negative thing I’ve ever posted about David Cook. I’m highly embarassed. I hated, *hated *his Eleanor Rigby at the time, but last night I went back and re-watched and loved, loved it, and bought the single.

I’m not sure what struck me as so “posery” about him before, but maybe I just wasn’t convinced he was for reals. Now he’s hands-down my favorite. This is probably the most extreme turn-about I’ve had in the time I’ve watched the show. I can see how it is easy to peg him as Daughtry-lite, but you know what? He’s better, smarter - dare I say sexier? - and more interesting than Daughtry ever was, and I like Daughtry.

That said, I’m not sure he should win - though he certainly deserves to. Given that winning isn’t always the best, nor necessary, career move, he will clearly have a career if he makes it to the top five or so. I certainly do not want to see him forced to sing one of those horrid “This is My Now” finale songs. Barf.

As for David A., he is exceptionally talented but may have a harder time going out on his own - he may be the one to benefit the most from winning. So I’m rooting for both of the Davids. The rest can go to hell as far as I’m concerned.

Also in my internet-poking I’ve found that Josiah Leming still seems to have a pretty strong fan base and is doing some recording and touring. He’s another genuine article - I’d buy his record, easily.

I’m trying to decide whether to watch Wednesday’s show. I am glad that they’re going to eliminate someone this year, but I might just watch Tues and Thur.

I think what sets David Cook apart from Daughtry is personality. Daughtry was…well, a dick. He was stuck up, took himself too seriously, and didn’t seem able to relax. David Cook is geeky, funny, and not afraid to make fun of himself. Plus, I think of the two of them, Cook has a much better voice. That long note with the step-up on Billie Jean was unbelievable.

What’s the agenda? Performances Tuesday, “Give back” glurge on Wednesday, elimination Thursday?

Last season they didn’t send anyone home Wednesday, but combined their votes from that week and the following week. I think they may have sent two home the following week, as well. (Checks Wikip.) Yep.

But this season, they’re just airing a third night for a one-hour elimination. GMAFB. It’s airing against new episodes of NBC’s popular comedy line-up, so I’m guessing people will just flip over at the end to see who goes home. Not me – I don’t want to risk missing the opening scene of The Office.

Yes, that’s right. And I’m thinking I don’t want to miss Big Brother or Wife Swap just to watch them pat themselves on the back and make accomplished musicians sound bad.

Rachael don’t feel bad, I spent far too long yesterday looking up Season 2 contestants and digging them. Clay, Josh Gracin, Trynece, Ruben, Kimberly Locke…the best season of the show so far. The group sings were so much better, it’s amazing. They were still ‘high school ensemble medley’ performances, but the group blended better, got out into the audience more, handled key changes and song transitions more smoothly, just an all around better group.
