Even with Nadia’s few off notes, her performance was warm & beautiful & comfortable to me. (Don’t mind me, I’m in love with her, I’m not objective.) As for the song, the fact that she went with an obscure song & did it well is cool to me.
Bar band boy singing “Free Bird”? Talk about a totally safe song. Hey, if I were up there, I’d want to do a classic at least once. But “Free Bird”? The end was cool, though. A few votes for not being an incompetent.
Anwar was atonal; he left his pretty tones behind tonight. Scott started out not even close to in tune. Anthony is no Paul Young (& there’s a phrase you don’t really expect to have occasion to utter). Admittedly, I’m poisoned against these 3 already, & upset that all 3 were still here this week, but I was shocked at the nice things the judges said to the lads after slamming Nadia.
Vonzell did a very good job. Let me rephrase that: Vonzell hit everything as well as Deniece, & there’s a lot in that song. I am morally bound to vote for her.
(Simon, however, while I think he was being honest, kind of upset me by the remark about Nadia when speaking to Vonzell. Yes, if we somehow had to choose between “black girls,” then Vonzell is looking like a top-two finalist tonight, & Nadia like an honorable mention. But Nadia had a great performance last week, & anyway, he doesn’t do this to Anthony & Scott! See past the chocolate, limey! OK, he used to do it to Constantine & Bo. But with Nadia going first tonight, some people may not have seen her; she doesn’t need sabotage from the panel.)
Carrie was pitchy. * Carrie?!! was pitchy?!!* But she powered through it. Why did I throw a few votes to her tonight, while I dismiss pitchy-power Anthony, & I’m not even a serious Carrie fan? First, she doesn’t do it all the time. Second, she’s got a much bigger voice than, well, the rest of the field. When she “powers through it,” it’s better. Third, I’m a sucker for “Love Is a Battlefield”.
Constantine is no longer the dark horse. He has dethroned Bo. He’s the front-runner. I wondered how he would do “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I see, just cut out the harmony stuff. Sort of worked. A few votes, totally unnecessary on my part, between power-voting for Nadia.
I mean, I’ve got to give other Nadia fans a chance to get through.
It’s funny how much my paradigm has shifted. I felt guilty for my part last year in keeping Jasmine Trias over LaToya London, & that was what, 7 votes? I voted [embarrassingly large number of] times for Nadia tonight, & I worry that it’s not enough. (Or somehow counterproductive.)
