American Idol 4/12

There are no words for how much I hate Scott - what was that throwing gang sign thing at the end of the interview? Ugh, go home.

Constantine - less eye fucking but he still looks like a date rapist. You’ve gotta have a set to take on a song like that, I liked him again and still feel dirty.

Bo - I agree with Dungbeetle. Freebird needs to be retired. And Simon was right, it is an iconic song, and his beloved demo probably didn’t know why Bo was racing around on stage yodeling.

Carrie - was apparantly singing a different song than the band was playing. I just don’t like her. She’d be in the house band in Hell.

Vonzell - Love!

Hall looke puffy and weird, but Oates looks like he’s on his way to Jaqueline Wildenstienland.

Did anyone else notice the very short camera cut - can’t recall who was singing, but Paula was having a giant spazz attack and for a second it looked like she was trying to climb on the chair and Simon had to grab her arm to keep her from falling behind the desk. The camera cut away pretty quickly.

I am really over the audience booing when they disagree with the judges.

Am I the only one who thinks that Anthony looked better with glasses? Maybe I just have a thing for nerds, but I think that he looks weird without the glasses. They gave his head a little contrast.

That being said, I think that Scott is going to go. Even if he hadn’t dissed the voters, his sing sub-par. My list:

  1. Carrie
  2. Bo
  3. Vonzell
  4. Connie
  5. Anthony
  6. Anwar
  7. Nadia
  8. Scott

**Tonight **

  1. Constantine – A star!
  2. Anwar – That voice, and so good-looking!
  3. Vonzell – She is so hot. Great energy.
  4. Anthony – Best night for him in a in a while
  5. Nadia – Will never stop liking her.
  6. Carrie – Some songs and some singers should not be attempted, unless you can do a dead on version, or put a new take on a song, or artist. Carrie did neither.
  7. Bo – Sweet Peaches Crist, Freebird?!
Simon was correct. Bo should not be singing “rock” songs. He should put a rock edge to variety of songs
  8. Scott – “I’m up here while thousands aren’t.” Pathetic.

Overall

  1. Anwar
  2. Constantine
  3. Vonzell
  4. Nadia
  5. Anthony

I thought the band was at least partially at fault for Bo’s version of Freebird. They started too soon and played too fast towards the end.

Best to worst based on tonight’s performance

  1. Constantine - by a long shot
  2. Bo - band screwed him up
  3. Vonzell - good, but a bit perky for my taste
  4. Anwar - I wish he would do better, but he has no stage presence
  5. Anthony - improvement, but still think he’s boring
  6. Carrie - voice wasn’t powerful enough
  7. Nadia - Ego is over-riding her talent
  8. Scott - voice was very flat tonight

Nadia: Eh.

Bo: Oh good lord. Well, we knew eventually it would be either this or “Sweet Home Alabama”. Heck, if he lasts long enough, perhaps we shouldn’t rule out SHA. Anyway, terrific as always. However, I’m not sure if I agree with Simon or not about his song choice, because I’m not sure what he was getting at.

Anwar: This is the second time he’s sung a woman’s song. Closet? What closet?

Anthony: Not bad for what it was. Jaade, what is your favorite part of this song?

Vonzell: I think she forgot a line. Otherwise, terrific. And it took ten minutes for me to get through on her line, so apparently I’m not the only one who thinks so. And QueenTonya, I hope you pointed out that the song is from Footloose, not Flashdance.

Scott: Jeez, man. You show as much emotion as a brick wall. And Shut Up Paula. The fact that the composers of the song were in the audience is no excuse: contestants in previous seasons had to deal with guest judges. And Scott…whoa there, sunshine. If he doesn’t go tomorrow night, he’ll become this season’s John Stevens, only he’ll deserve it.

Carrie: You remember “That '80s Show” on Fox a few years back? And the scene in the premiere that had me LOLing, where the girl was sipping a wine cooler, couch-dancing to and singing along with “Love Is A Battlefield”? And the joke was that she was so insufferably perky that her singing a relatively hardcore song was ridiculous? I don’t know what made me think of that.

Constantine: Another joking speculation plays out. I can’t imagine anyone else in this or any other season having the cojones to attempt BoRap…or the ability to pull it off. Bravo. Although I should note that I was also listening and not watching. Oh, and LilyoftheValley, I thought BoRap was supposed to be rock-opera, so I can see how Hedwig could pull it off.

Also, it was thoughtful of Ryan to point out that Hall and Oates wrote “Every Time You Go Away”, but it’s my understanding that they didn’t write it for Paul Young. It was on their album Voices, which IIRC, was released in 1981. Young’s version was better than theirs, but it wasn’t a gift.

And Hall didn’t look much better than Oates. Steroids? His face was so wide!

And do they tell the people in the audience to boo Simon?

Debbie Gibson to replace Paula. Or Brandy, if she’s not ineligible, having been a guest judge (auditions).

Funny thing, as soon as the title appeared on the screen during Bo’s interview I immediately imagined a gaggle of drunk bikers yelling "PLAY FREEBIRD!!

So of course, I’m writing this while listening to Freebird.

clicks on lighter

Much better show than last week. I liked Nadia’s performance, although it was a little boring. I enjoyed Carrie too, which is rare for me considering I’m not all that into the Fembot thing.

Scott seriously needs to get to packin’. His skeevy ass has long overstayed it’s welcome. Hopefully pitching his mini-hissy to Simon will due him in.

I love Vonzell. She’s just so damn likeable. I always find myself smiling when I watch her perform.

And god help me, I actually kind of enjoyed Constantskeeve’s performance, although I thought the “fancy” camera stuff was a bit much. And when he did that obnoxious little “call me” schtick I actually cringed. Then I jumped back onto the hate train.

Ugh.

Even with Nadia’s few off notes, her performance was warm & beautiful & comfortable to me. (Don’t mind me, I’m in love with her, I’m not objective.) As for the song, the fact that she went with an obscure song & did it well is cool to me.

Bar band boy singing “Free Bird”? Talk about a totally safe song. Hey, if I were up there, I’d want to do a classic at least once. But “Free Bird”? The end was cool, though. A few votes for not being an incompetent.

Anwar was atonal; he left his pretty tones behind tonight. Scott started out not even close to in tune. Anthony is no Paul Young (& there’s a phrase you don’t really expect to have occasion to utter). Admittedly, I’m poisoned against these 3 already, & upset that all 3 were still here this week, but I was shocked at the nice things the judges said to the lads after slamming Nadia.

Vonzell did a very good job. Let me rephrase that: Vonzell hit everything as well as Deniece, & there’s a lot in that song. I am morally bound to vote for her.

(Simon, however, while I think he was being honest, kind of upset me by the remark about Nadia when speaking to Vonzell. Yes, if we somehow had to choose between “black girls,” then Vonzell is looking like a top-two finalist tonight, & Nadia like an honorable mention. But Nadia had a great performance last week, & anyway, he doesn’t do this to Anthony & Scott! See past the chocolate, limey! OK, he used to do it to Constantine & Bo. But with Nadia going first tonight, some people may not have seen her; she doesn’t need sabotage from the panel.)

Carrie was pitchy. * Carrie?!! was pitchy?!!* But she powered through it. Why did I throw a few votes to her tonight, while I dismiss pitchy-power Anthony, & I’m not even a serious Carrie fan? First, she doesn’t do it all the time. Second, she’s got a much bigger voice than, well, the rest of the field. When she “powers through it,” it’s better. Third, I’m a sucker for “Love Is a Battlefield”.

Constantine is no longer the dark horse. He has dethroned Bo. He’s the front-runner. I wondered how he would do “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I see, just cut out the harmony stuff. Sort of worked. A few votes, totally unnecessary on my part, between power-voting for Nadia.

I mean, I’ve got to give other Nadia fans a chance to get through.

It’s funny how much my paradigm has shifted. I felt guilty for my part last year in keeping Jasmine Trias over LaToya London, & that was what, 7 votes? I voted [embarrassingly large number of] times for Nadia tonight, & I worry that it’s not enough. (Or somehow counterproductive.)

Paula’s replacement will be Jessica Simpson.

Oh, yeah, Scott & Carrie want to tell us they can RAWK. Heh.

Well, I’m sure Hall & Oates were glad of the royalties from Scott, but probably wish they had a Vonzell to sing their song.
As for Scott: He’s a Christian! He’s a thug! (He’s a Borgia?) He’s making excuses like Mikalah (bad move) & flirting like Constantine (kind of scary)! Unluckily for Mr. Savol, while there is a kind of body type that uses excess weight to help project musically, he seems not to have it. Nor range. Two weeks ago, it was the high notes, this week it was the low. Please send him home!

And Carrie was funny tonight.

Carrie covered for herself pretty well. I liked her tonight, as well as Bo, Anwar, and Vonzell.

Scott must leave. Leave now! (I’ve been saying this for a while, but apparently not enough voters are listening…)

Starting to? He’s so much more obvious than Nikko! How have you missed this? It’s the teeth, right?

All the judges are on acid. Vonzell, at the very least, is a better technical singer. Nadia, Bo, & Constantine are at least more disciplined than Narcissus Teeth’n’Dreads. Oy, Randy, are you deaf or just tone-deaf?

Oh, yeah, I don’t even watch Constantine & Vonzell. I want to judge on the voice, & the come-on faces are distracting.

Nobody nailed their song tonight. I cringed in every single one of them. Nobody was terrible though (with the exception of Scott - he hit like 2 lines in the whole song. He is extremely amateur.) It’s been a few hours so this isn’t as detailed as I’d like,
Nadia-- Bad song choice but she sung it well enough. She doesn’t really have the chops to win. I remember a few shaky segments.

Bo-- I disagree with Simon although I don’t think he is finals material

Anwar-- Haven’t really been a fan of his. Okay…that’s it.

Anthony-- Eek, It was better than the last few weeks but that’s not much of a comparison. He’s either nervous or he simply doesn’t have the voice.

Vonzell-- Fun song, wasn’t perfect.

Scott-- Yikes

Carrie-- I’m in love with her. Deeply. We were meant to be. This is the first time in memory she missed notes… but she did not miss many.

Connie-- This performance made me really respect queen even more than I did before. He did a very respectable job but I could tell he was really working. He missed a few big notes but not much else.

Ratings?

Carrie has the best voice.

Scott has to go.

Here’s how it shaped up for me:

  1. Constantine - gutsy song pick and did it well, like the showman he is
  2. Vonzell - perky number not sung as well as the original but enjoyable
  3. Carrie - she can rock okay but country’s her thang
  4. Bo - decent performance I guess
  5. Nadia - not her best by a long shot, could have picked a better song
  6. Anwar - has no dynamics in his vocal style, kinda boring really
  7. Anthony - not bad tonight but will be voted off fairly soon
  8. Scott - goodbye dude

Constantine is the one to beat because he combines showmanship with style and a decent voice. He’s definitely not boring to watch like so many of the others.

For me, the best was:

  1. Carrie
  2. Constantine(What is with this guy? He’s becoming more and more impressive)
  3. Anwar

Bottom Three:

  1. Nadia
  2. Scott
  3. Anthony(but, only because someone has to be there).

If there’s any justice, Scott will be eliminated.

I grew up with a mother who was a Crystal Gale fanatic - I happen to LOVE the song that Nadia chose and I thought she did a fabulous job. Nadia, Constantine and Vonzell were my definite favorites. I want to love Anwar, but I just don’t understand why everyone keeps saying his voice is great, I thought he sounded terrible. Also thought Scott sounded TERRIBLE.

As a non-Con fan, I suspect that he flattened that note on purpose for sort of a jazzy blues feeling. I thought it was effective and that he did the whole very angular melody of that song very well, but then my tastes are probably unorthodox.

Oh please, dear Og, make Scott go away. Please.

I thought Nadia did a decent job. True, it wasn’t her best performance, but it certainly wasn’t her worst. She’s got to learn to stop scrunching her face whenever she hits a high note, though. And her dress! First thing I thought was, “Heh – she’s channeling Tina Turner.”

Constantine’s always amused me. I honestly don’t think he’ll win, but I’m willing to bet he’ll be in the top three. I cringed when he said he was going to do “Bohemian Rhapsody”, but wouldn’t you know, he did Freddie Mercury proud.

I love Anwar – always have, always will. But he’s slipping. Dionne Warwick?!? Huh?!?

Contrary to what Simon said about Jessica not being likeable – it’s * Carrie* I don’t find likeable at all. She’s got the voice and the look, but that’s it. And yeah, she can rock. She’s uncomfortable, though. I derive no pleasure from watching her.

Something compels me to want to pat Anthony’s head with a “There, there”. Part of it is the Harry Potter-esque persona (albeit blonde). Good voice, nonthreatening, but does nothing for me. He’s the equivalent to the wallpaper in the bedroom – noticeable, but not memorable.

Vonzell, you’re a sweetie

The only thing that drives me nuts about Bo is when he takes the mike stand with him wherever onstage he goes. AAARGH! And yes, I had my lighter flicked during “Freebird”

Bottom Three This Week? Scott, Anthony, and probably Nadia
Who Should Go? Scott.
Who Will Go? Either Scott or Anthony. Knowing my luck it’ll probably be Anthony, though…

Every week I get a replay of Anthony, Anwar and Connie because they are “local boys”. I figured, with all this Connie-love going around, I misheard. Nope. That was terrible. It was off-key and just bad.

Anwar came off even worse on second hearing. Very nasal. So I’m changing my bottom three to Scott, Constantine and Anwar.
