American Idol 4/12

How about a parrot that squacks “I’m so proud!” when you pull on it’s tailfeathers?

When Simon said Freebird was a “sacred” song, it was his way of saying it was a stupid, overplayed song that’s become a joke and nobody should sing it. Even singing it to be ironic is exhausted. It’s the same every week for me. Bo has a good voice, his song selection sucks. It’s bad classic rock radio… those stations that will play the same 30 songs every day. Boo.

I also hate Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s another overplayed, over rated classic rock anthem. At least he didn’t do all the Mama Mia Amadeus Fandango pseudo-opera crap, which are among the dumbest lyrics in the history of rock and roll.

There’s not a contestant in the bunch with instincts for what is and isn’t a good song… or a sense of what they oughta be singing. Anwar keeps picking dripping lady songs. Anthony loves the blandest 80s songs. Scott just sings songs I’ve never heard of and murders them. I don’t know what Nadia’s trying to do. Vonzell is OK, maybe. Bah.

Paula’s drunken sycophancy has become unbearable. The producers or somebody really needs to talk to her.

Heh.

I just kept looking at his face thinking, when did he become so hot? (We’re talking about Bo, for those who don’t want to scroll up)

Do you have any idea how much parrots cost? Better stick with Pauler.

Anwar is back to sounding out of tune for me. I’ve given up expecting improvement from him.

I dislike it when Carrie just stands there and sings. But I dislike it more when she does that weird hip thing. Make it stop!

QueenTonya I loved your narrative!

It seemed unfair that Constantine got all those action camera angle shots & other people didn’t.

I thought Bo picked a dumb song - it’s a musician’s showcase, not a singer’s. But he gets points back for having a good hair day. Nadia is so slick she’s shiny (anybody else notice the caption said the song was by Mac Davis?). Let’s Hear it For the Boy was Footloose, not Flashdance. Afed needs to showcase those biceps. Vonzell’s happy act bugs me. Constantine is really, really good, damn him!

Thank you! That bugged the hell out of me. However, I believe Voices was released in 1980. :stuck_out_tongue:

Seacrest, you aren’t fit to lick Casey Kasem’s boots clean, much less take over for him on AT40. Keep reaching for the stars, a-hole.

Okay, someone upthread mentioned Carrie channelling goat girl? That’s exactly what I thought, too. Plus, she was trying too hard to rock out to a song no one should ever sing again. I can’t hear the song without picturing the ridiculous video (and hearing the dialogue from the video).

The only performances I liked were Nadia (good performance of a bad song) and ::gulp:: Constantine. Again, folding my arms and pouting while grudgingly admitting this. Next time though? No tongue. It was bad enough I enjoyed his singing, but after the tongue, I snapped my head away from the TV as if I were watching a horror movie.

As I understand it, the new teen slang is to call everybody “dude,” regardless of gender. My son calls me “dude” when he gets on a roll. I always give him The Look!

That being said, Randy is too old to be calling anybody “dude.” Or “dawg,” for that matter.

Sorry for the double post.

Did anyone else catch Paula stumbling back to a seated position after praising someone’s performance?

After a different rambling “praise-a-thon” by Paula, I loved that Simon told her she was struggling.

She’s a mess. I really hope she doesn’t have a problem.

Duly noted. 1981 was the year I bought a copy.

thoughts…
So **Connie ** is 29 or 30 years old?? Can you still be an ‘idol’ at that point?
Bo, the microphone just clips off. No need to pick the whole stand up and walk around with it.
Scott, it’s constructive criticism (usually). Mellow. I know you want to hit him, but don’t.
Anwar, we know you can do interesting things with your voice, but pick a note and hold it for more than a millisecond. All that up and down crap is giving me motion sickness. Listen to singers today, they don’t sing like that!
Paula, to paraphrase Mr. Hand, stoned and drunk is no way to go thru a tv show.

I’m no fan of Nadia, but I liked her song. Real soulful and was surprised when i found out it was a CGayle song. I liked it better than most, then again I like soul music. When you do a song no one’s heard of, you risk being thrown into the ‘meh’ category.
**Scott ** really blew it at the begining, but I thought he did well from then on. I didn’t really dislike it like everyone else did.
Vonzell, I liked the song, performance, though I thought her voice was a little off in spots. Still me 2nd fav.
**Carrie ** should not try to rock out, she sounded like a fish out of water but she could grow into it if she wanted though, and she looked fantabulous and still my favorite.

I think his birthday is late in the year. If he was 28 when he auditioned, and turned 29 shortly afterwards, and will turn 30 later this year, it’s all good.

I’m sorry, but I couldn’t let this pass without comment.

I have always thought that Paul Young(who is a fabulous vocalist, otherwise) absolutely ruined the original by H & O. The original had a classic soul-Philly R&B sound,it was a bit slower and had horns. Hall’s vocal on the original was superlative, and he really sounded emotionally involved in the song. Paul Young turned it into MOR crap. The ironic part is that when Paul Young first came on the scene, I kept touting him to friends, saying how great he was, but when I heard his version of ETYGA, my first reaction was: “What the hell is THIS crap???”

sigh

I feel better now. I really do.

Bo: As noted, Freebird is one verse + extended guitar solo. So I was wondering what he was going to do to fill the time…sing the solo while playing air guitar (insert Strongbad clip here)?

Scott: finally grew a personality, after weeks of being Zombie Singer from Planet X. And the personality we get: Bad Attitude. Go away.

Anwar: I totally do not get all the props he gets on his technique. His voice sounds thin & wobbly. But my wife loves him…

I’m beginning to like Connie. Certainly makes interesting song choices.

Rilchiam, I cannot remember now but I was singing along with him and then…they skipped right over the part that I liked and went straight to the chorus. It’s not a favorite verse or anything, it was just a tiny little part of the song.
I don’t get some of the Carrie hate. I know that a lot of people think she’s a Barbie Doll and I get that. I know that she looks a little uncomfortable on stage but I think that’s midwestern shy girl hoping everyone is going to like her. I don’t think she knew what to do when Simon wasn’t complimentary towards her tonight. They talk about her doing country and how she should try to keep from being pigeon-holed but when she does a half-decent job (at least) with a song that does take a LOT of power to sing they cut her no slack. If they are going to cut SCOTT slack, everyone else should be getting phenomenal praise. Everyone. That…boy couldn’t sign his way out of a paper sack as far as I’m concerned at this point. Based on what I’ve seen this season I would be a lot more likely to actually buy albums from most of this seaon’s singers when they come out than any other season.

But not Scott’s. I’d maybe buy Vonzell’s…I’d probably buy Carrie’s and Bo’s…but I wouldn’t want to hear Scott’s for free.

It also had an organ, so it was a much different version. Both are good songs, but I prefer H&O’s. And AFed was definitely listening to the poppier Paul Young version this week, but couldn’t even muster up the blue-eyed soul necessary to pull off either version.

As much as I’m over Scott, he did a better job with “She’s Gone” than AFed did with “ETYGA”. Not great, but better. When he got to the higher notes, anyway. The beginning of the two verses were painful.

Oy, I shoulda known it was Footloose not Flashdance, I’m gonna blame that one on my inability to read my own scribbled notes. :smack:

Man, I wish I did the Tivo thing, I think it’d be hilarious to watch Carrie’s detergent commercial 50s housewife thing from last week and then watch her Elvis-jerky moves from last night. Is it that she just isn’t comfortable dancing about and is concentrating so much on the moves that she misses notes and screws up the words? I still think she’s got one of the best voices in the competition, maybe she needs a gulp out of Paula’s glass before each performance.

Speaking of, I noticed Paula’s sideways slumping back into her seat, last night it so looked like they keep her in the middle so she can bounce off the two guys instead of falling dead into the aisle. Even the kids I was watching with were asking what was wrong with her. It makes me giggle in a guilty kinda way imagining how much Simon utterly hates it, especially when she all interrupts all over him. They don’t have time to rehab her this close to the finals without it being very noticeable, anyone think she’ll last thru the finale?

No TiVo needed – check out watchidol.com (although you might want to wait until the weekend – the site is impossibly slow for a day or two after the show).
