Wha . . . huh. . . I’m currently all hepped up on drugs(no, not the *good *kind, people) so I’ll need someone to confirm that I did not hallucinate Dolph Lundgren singing and dancing around in a tuxedo. I don’t even want to address the drumming. . . .
Adam has never performed on Broadway, but a lot of people get this wrong because he has performed in touring Broadway shows - including Hair in Europe and a long stint as a chorus boy/understudy with Wicked in L.A. But nope, no New York theater whatsoever.
It’s certainly unusual for them to bring back a previous contestant as a mentor, but it makes a lot of sense. First, ratings are down this season and the show clearly loves last season - they’ve already had six of the top 10 from last year back to perform (Kris has been back TWICE), which is unheard of. While Adam’s album isn’t exactly blowing up the charts, he has managed to become a household name, and has a huge fan base which will draw people like me, who have given up on the show this season but will watch when my favorite contestants come back to visit. Also, it’s Elvis night, and as someone pointed out, Elvis was a showman not a songwriter. You need a mentor who can help the contestants inject a little flair into songs that will otherwise fall flat.
Plus I get the sense that Adam is a natural teacher - he’s very honest and articulate, quickly zeroing in on specific helpful critiques. He and Kris were a perfect team in that way - in that Kris was a genius with song choice and arrangement, and Adam helped him gain confidence and stage presence, to the point that Kris actually beat him.
As for this season, eh, I’m so over it. I have gone from wanting to go gay for Siobhan to hating, absolutely hating whatever the hell happened to her. Every performance seems over-calculated to win votes, to the point that it all goes wrong. Just go out there with your flat hair and weird jean-jackets and sing the shit out of it, stupid. She could have won the show on that, but I think she’s actually in real danger of going home this week; it’s worse to be a disappointment then to be consistently bad, and whining to the judges - particularly Simon - only pisses off the voters.
Bizarro-world night…
Rowsbower–Well performed, but sounds the same as everything else she’s done with zero surprises, much like listening to a Huey Lewis album. Her stage presence and connection is improving greatly though, so props to that.
Andrew–Strange and desperate. He really has no range and only a narrow selection of songs he’s able to do his thing with. He needs the mercy killing of the vote-off this week.
Lee–Does the grunge-lite genre have any room left? It’s getting to be crowded in there.
Turbanator–Best of the night and this kid is a runaway surprise. He may be able to convincingly resurrect that 70’s smarm-folk genre (John Denver, Jim Croce, Sonny Bono)
Big Mike–Cartman mixed with Mariah equals nausea.
The Shiv–Lives up to her nickname, there’s a demon under the nice girl disguise, you can believe that she was already calculating how to dispose of the judges’ bodies in the glassblowing forge. She sang great, but 1:30 is not enough to do a slow paced song justice on this show with her range and ability–it always feels like watching Tiger Woods forced to play miniature golf.
Scrappy Do–A mature voice in a smurf body, he needs to do a hard road tour for a couple of years with Willie Nelson. Come back with nicotine stains in your crow’s feet, then I’ll believe it.
Jem–Bright lights, sass, hair flips…but will her doll sell when it hits the shelves? Only if a free stick of strawberry-flavored glitter lip gloss is included.
Did anyone else catch Adam telling Andrew, “I know I can be straight up with you…”?
I lol’d.
Also, I’d give anything to be able to vote for Adam last night instead of any of the contestants. Seeing him again was a harsh reminder of how much I loved Idol last year and how much I could give two shits if Ricky Minor won it this year.
Woe.
Bizarro-world is right. I find that I’m really liking TUrban when he sings something simple and clean - now, if only his voice would actually hold onto the notes he’s trying to sing…
I can’t find the words to criticize Siobhan - I agree with everyone here, but there’s something I can’t put my finger on. She went from having a special something to me not knowing what to do with her songs. When she was talking about not wanting to be pigeon-holed (right before the bedroom door slamming - heh), I said to Jim that it’s fine to not have only one persona as a singer, but you really should only have one persona per song. (Which would be a criticism or praise for Adam - his strength was putting on a persona each week.)
Was it just me, or was Andrew talking about him and Big Mike being dads some kind of pathetic plea for people to not vote them off the show?
I do not know, but if Andrew isn’t voted off, I am leaving god. heh.
In a masochistic way, I usually enjoy the group sings. But Wow, the Elvis medley was epitome of suckitude. They all deserve to go home after that travesty. They have learned to put the microphones over there mouth so they don’t even have to pretend to be lip-synching.
My daughter wants to get to sleep early tonight, so would someone be good enough to spoiler whoever it was that got sent down tonight?
The show does conclude at 9 p.m. Eastern, yes?
Well, that was abrupt.
How do you do a spoiler again?
BetsQ spoiler intentionally spelled wrong.
[spioler] message [/spioler]
Andrew, Aaron and Casey were brought down to the stage, Andrew was sent packing. Aaron and Casey are safe tonight
Sorry for the abruptness; since Melinda Doolittle didn’t win two years ago, the only reason I’ve had to find out anything about the show has been to find out the results for Michaela when she had scheduling conflicts.
Anyway, to make a spoiler, code it like this (with brackets instead of () parentheses): (SPOILER)text(/SPOILER).
Capitalization is optional.
Thanks very much for any assistance you can provide.
ETA: and many thanks, notfrommensa.
:o No, Ryan’s dismissal of the first bootee was abrupt - not your question. Sorry!
Oh. No worries, then.
There were two people dismissed? Who was the other?
Kaylasdad99, YW, I live in Central Time Zone but I believe East Coast Starting time is 9 pm and end time is 10 pm. (Daylight Time)
ETA, Yes two people are going home. Katie, Siobhan, Crystal, Big Mike, Lee, TUrban are vulnerable. Aaron and Casey are safe
Nice job by Brooke White and Justin, although they kinda looked like Belle and Gaston doing a duet there.
Isn’t that the way it is? Two people will go home.
Thanks for the correction. I’m not a theater guy, and I totally misread the Wiki.
And the other idol that goes home tonight is:
Katie
I didn’t realize that the show was on at 9 instead of 8, so I thought notfrommensa’s post was definitive and comprehensive.
Anyway, now that it’s past 10 EDT, who’s the second goer-homer?
Thanks again, notfrommensa. Michaela will sleep well tonight.
