American Idol 4/19

What will it be if they did a theme of punk music?

I’m too young for tonights theme, so can someone answer this for me: Did all disco songs start out slow and dramatic before getting upbeat?

I’m like a proud mother of my Vonzell.

Vonzell looks really cute, but she’s flatter than flat. Guess she can do Whitney but not Chaka. Then again, nobody but Chaka can really do Chaka. Which IMHO is a very good thing.

Dramatic, yes. Not necessarily slow, though. And not all disco music sucks, either, although it’s kind of hard to tell from these choices. What, no Commodores? Won’t someone think of the children?

I hate Constantine. I do not like his voice and I don’t like his eyeshadow and I don’t like him. I dislike him more than I skeeve Scott-- who sounded great, btw.

Anwar sounds good tonight, and I usually don’t like his voice.

And I want the number of that blonde in the front row.

Oh no! Anwar is sounding worse than Connie.

Now, why didn’t Anwar wear the outfit he had on for the little video crap thing? I don’t usually like him, but he’s doing OK tonight. EW&F is a good fit for him. If only he had those Philip Bailey high notes … not too bad overall, though.

Nice dancing by Anwar. Good performance.

I haven’t been impressed tonight. I hope Bo knocks it out of the park–I’m thinking he had the best rehearsals which is why they put him last…

Bo needs to bring it on, I feel like I really wasted an hour of my life here.

I’m checking everyone’s zippers now also, so far so good.

Bo- Cool song, great performance.

They should just cut Bo loose this week because he does not need this contest. He is so far beyond these kids in ability and talent that he should just go and find a new contract now.

Oh that was wonderful, thank you Bo. I feel the need for a cigarette now.

I wanna be the meat in a Bo and Anwar sammich. Too bad Anwar was the worst tonight. Bo was fantastic.

Have one. You won’t be sorry. I don’t know this song, but I love it. My only complaint is that Bo had a shirt on under the jacket. A bare chest would have been better. But, I might have fainted dead away.

With what seems to be the worst theme evah! - yes, even worse than the Broadway Musical night, I almost wish I could be out of town for the week again. Alas, I am here and I will be faithfully reporting the events of the evening (for Good Egg if no one else  )

Please, don’t be harsh on me about the names of these songs and artists if they don’t clearly state them beforehand. This genre of music is certainly not my forte (being a mere 5 years old at the end of this decade - and having better taste in music!).

With no further ado…

Constantine Maroulis - Nights on Broadway - Bee Gees - He sounds like his mic isn’t turned up in the beginning of the song. Also? Don’t wink at the camera with your eyeliner on. ~wrinkles nose~ He’s wearing far too much makeup. Musically he sounds decent. I don’t understand why he’s walking around with the mic stand. I know I’m going to say this a lot tonight - I’ve never heard this song before so I don’t know if the arrangement is any good. Randy says that was a good choice, he feels like he’s seeing a great Las Vegas performance, he doesn’t get any originality from Constantine. Paula says that everything about him in the past few weeks is “Oh my god” and it’s like he has a habit of picking the right song for him with the right amount of theatrics. She says he has stage presence and sex appeal. Simon says he’s on a roll but it was a performance by a waiter in a ghastly Spanish restaurant. Who was the weird woman they showed in the crowd with the white face? That’s his mom, I bet!
Carrie Underwood - MacArthur Park - Donna Summers - Is the song supposed to sound like that in the beginning? It seemed that it started off with a very weird rhythm. You can hardly hear her over the music. I think this is going to be her roughest week. She doesn’t know this song (but hey! - neither do I). She’s powering through the notes but she just doesn’t have a good grasp of the genre, I’m afraid. The last part was pure POWER. Randy says that was an unbelievable vocal, she’s one of the best singers in the competition. Paula says “wow on that last note”, Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Simon says she sang it very well. He calls her look Barbie Meets the Stepford Wives. I have to agree, her dress and hair look very strange.
Scott Savol - Everlasting Love (Did they say Robert Knight?) - I cannot stand him and his horrible attitude. This arrangement seems a little fast and it doesn’t seem as if he’s keeping up. He’s at least (mostly) in tune this week, for a change. He’s had far worse performances. Randy says that he’s impressed with Scott’s song choices the last three weeks. Paula says he has fun out there and seems to be on pitch tonight. Simon makes fun of Paula and then says he’s been trying to figure out why Scott is still in this competition. He says he’s because he’s the “ordinary guy” and he thinks his performance was akin to a guy in a karaoke bar.
Anthony Fedorov - Don’t Take Away the Music - Tavarus - I don’t know this song either. Anthony sounds pretty good this week, I think. He seems to REALLY be enjoying the song. He’s dancing all over the place. This is possibly his best performance for me. He sounds good, he’s in key and confident. I have no complaints. Randy says that he didn’t fall down this week. Paula said his vocals sounded great, he danced a little, it was in his range, it was his best week. Simon says it was pleasant, safe and a little something that I didn’t hear because my email notification went off.
Vonzell Solomon - I’m Every Woman - Chaka Khan - I think this is another good song choice for Vonzell. She’s sassy and having fun. This song I do know, thanks to Whitney’s remake for The Bodyguard. She sounds really good on stage tonight. Her back-up singers actually seemed to miss a few notes on the bridge. That was a nice performance. Randy says the song was the hardest song picked tonight. He says she worked it out. Paula says she rocked the house. It’s the best performance so far tonight. Simon says that it was really difficult to sing but she was right on the edge vocally. He says no one else in the contest has the personality to pull off that song.
Anwar Robinson - September - Earth, Wind and Fire - Anwar…fashion of the 70s was off the hook? No…just no. He sounds a little hollow tonight. He almost sounds like he’s singing from his throat. Again, the music is louder than the singer. Ok…I can’t comment on the dancing/jumping. It’s just too…too easy. He wasn’t bad but I didn’t think it was that good, either. Randy says it started pitchy but was the bomb at the end and he had a lot of energy at the end (that’s an understatement). Paula says it was awesome, he had fun and was in the moment. She calls it a great performance. Simon says he doesn’t think it was as good as Paula thinks. The crowd boos. He says as usual it was a very good ending. He said he doesn’t think it was a winning performance.
Bo Bice - Vehicle - The Ides of March - Ok, I have heard this song. I wasn’t sure until he got to the Love ya! part. He has a good range for this song and of course, his stage performance is always on. Again with the mic stand though. Not through the whole song, it just looks weird with no band behind him. I think it was a solid performance. There were no mistakes. Randy says Bo Bice is definitely back America. Randy says that when he’s picks the right song he can hear him singing it in the studio. Paula says he’s proven that the competition is back on. Simon says that out of all 7 performances tonight Bo’s was the only authenticly good performance. Take a bow sexy future husband o’ mine!

(on preview–

rockle, I saw the zipper…thing…too. Weird and ugly. ConstantCheese was playing Johnny T tonight I think. Highlights? Eyeliner and lipstick? Too far for me. I’m also over “Scotty the Body” as a nickname.

It’s disconcerting that we are all in so much disagreement tonight. Generally there’s a consensus amongst us here about who did well and who really sucked but opinions are all over the place. I don’t even want to attempt a prediction this week. No one is safe so far - and only Bo left to sing.

When they preview everyone’s performances at the end, I hear inconsistencies I missed the first time around in every single performance except for Bo’s.

I love Bo, but I do not want to see him shirtless. His little pot belly kept trying to escape while he was dancing.
