American Idol 4/21 to 4/22

Rat Pack Night.

I can picture 4 of the final 5 handling Rat Pack standards easily. Allison may have a problem.

On the other hand, they have been wildly inconsistent about the practice of taking a song completely out of the genre over the years, which both Kris and Adam did.

Good grief. I need some more musical education. Anyone care to tell me about the Rat Pack and what we might expect to see next week?

Seriously, I had no idea I was this musically sheltered.

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. (and Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, non-singers).

The Rat Pack consisted of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford, and Joy Bishop. Peter was an actor and Joey was a comedian, so we’re mostly talking about Frank, Dean, and Sammy when it comes to music. They’re mostly crooners, lounge singers.

I’m not versed enough to give a good analysis, but here’s some samples of their music, most probably the songs that’ll be sung:

Frank:
My Way
Mack the Knife (not really Frank’s song, but a fantastic rendition of it)
My Kind of Town (Chicago Is)
Dean:
Volare
Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime
That’s Amore
Sammy:
Mr. Bojangles
The Candy Man

There may be other songs the contestants will pick in an effort to be original, but those are some of the most well-known ones.

Wow - now I see what he was going for. He totally didn’t get there on stage, but the studio version is just lovely. My biggest knock against him performing is that he can be very boring on stage - his great voice doesn’t always seem to translate live.

Here’s his version of “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone”, one of my favourite songs.

I took a listen to Lil in the studio to see if she could do better there; definitely better, but still not quite there. She is right next door to a very good singer; I just don’t know what she’s missing. ETA: Yup, gospel is definitely her home, after listening to “The Rose.”

I was happy with her and Anoop going yesterday - she just wasn’t getting it, and Anoop had reached the limit of his talent. I really hope Kris stays around to the end, because he has some real potential as a singer. Adam is, as others have said, the ultimate performer.

Just being able to do Frank Sinatra gives you a lot of space to work. He did a good number of pop standards–Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers & Hart–name one, and he might have done it. He also has some songs you could rock up, like “My Way” (any doubts, see Vicious comma Sid) and “That’s Life” (David Lee Roth did a good version). He also covered The Beatles, Billy Joel. Hell, even Kermit the Frog.

Throw in Dean and Sammy and you should be able to go whichever direction you want.

My song suggestions:

Adam: Night and Day (Nelson Riddle arrangement)
Kris: I Concentrate on You (Jobim’s arrangement will work beautifully with the same acoustic/rhythm section Kris brought this week)
Gokey: Candy Man (poifect!)
Lil: Get Happy
Matt: Ain’t that a Kick in the Head.

Lil is gonesville. I think you mean Allison.

Oh yeah. I’ll give Allison Mambo Italiano.

Careful, man, she’s only like 16.

The only version of Mambo Italiano I can think of was Rosemary Clooney’s.

Deano did it too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S-7Ap6J_FU

But yeah, the point is that Allison can do it Rosemary Clooney style. Good song for someone with big pipes.

I’m with you; I can acknowledge that Adam is great, as were Fantasia and Melinda, but my preference is for DC and Bo Bice (and even Michael Johns). Bo Bice took time off and has a baby now, but I think has put out an album. And I am waiting for the alert from amazon when Michael Johns’s album comes out!

For other Cook fans - he gave a free concert at his old high school the day after his sold out casino concert in Kansas city this week. At the casino he had his younger brother come on stage to sing with him. Cookie is coolhttp://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNM7ewV_xy0&feature=channel
