American Idol4/28-29

Well, here we go.

Who’s going home tomorrow?

I predict Matt, to be followed next week by Danny.

I think it will be Matt or Allison. She needs to have a great performance, and Rat Pack standards probably won’t do it.

Matt could actually do Ok here, like that red-headed John guy.

I think Allison could knock That’s Life out of the park. Whether the voting demographic would appreciate it is another question entirely.

She’s probably doing something else, but I wish she’d do that one. . .

I think Allison - I really like Matt!!

Spoilers up at mjsbigblog.com.

It’s funny–I wanted Adam to tackle Muse all season, and he does it on Rat Pack week!

Probably lots of filler tonight. Only five songs. Anyone mentoring?

I really wish they would just let people sing what they want. I really hate these stupid themes.

Yep, lots of of filler, 13 minutes and one song thus far.

I thought Kris was pretty good.

So far so good, though I wish Kris had gone acoustic. “The Way You Look Tonight” is a fine song but not quite sure it’s the first one these kids come up with whenever they have to pick a pop standard. Can’t anyone do “Paper Moon” or “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”?

I’d like to hear the Blazing Saddles version of “I get a Kick.”

Allison sounds great. I’m glad she’s too young to have any knowledge at all of the Rat Pack or that era of music. It prevents her from employing any kind of self-conscious affect. She’s just singing the song how she sings.

You do know that the Blazing Saddle “version” was the real lyrics, right?

Allison brought a tear to my eye.

Three songs now, and every one is a song that’s been done before on Idol. It would be nice to see someone do something else, since the material is vast. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Cole Porter song on this show. I’m holding out hope that Adam does “Night and Day.” As a gay man, he might have been inspired by the Kevin Kline movie?

Was Simon doing some reverse psychology when critiquing Allison? I think she did a great job and I’m thinking that Simon did that so people would call for her. And Kara mentioned her times in the bottom 3, perhaps to have the same effect. I haven’t called all season, but I might tonight (so I guess it worked?).

I was thinking the same thing. I haven’t voted all season, but feel like voting for Allison tonight. I would buy a full-length version of her singing that song.

Matt is breathing too much and the pronunciations are weird. Otherwise one of his better performances. Hard to do this one after Constantine’s famous version.

Matt wasn’t that great. He wasn’t terrible, but it was nothing special. It seemed kind of local-theater-ish to me.

It must sound really different there? I can’t think of what else to explain thinking Matt was the best of the first three. I thought it was the worst, though all three were pretty good. Allison’s was stunning, Kris’s was solid, and Matt’s was only OK. If I had to pick the one who knew and cared about the genre, I wouldn’t have guessed “Matt.”

They’re on their feet after EVERY performance, Seacrest. They’re trained, brainless seals.

I think Simon must have some kind of hearing impairment tonight. I don’t see how he can praise something as mediocre as that and say it was more “authentic” (whatever that means) than Allison’s performance, which was as flawless and unaffected a performance as this show ever sees.
