American Idol week of 4/7

I think we’re down to eight now. Which one do you suppose will be sent home this time?

Scott is far and away the least talented of the remaining bunch, but he’ll probably keep skating by on sympathy.

If forced to choose now – without seeing this week’s performances – I’d say either Allison gets the bottom vote but gets deservedly saved, or Matt’s mediocrity catches up with him.

Hard to guess, with Megan gone, its less climactic now.

So, I was visiting my mom in Michigan last weekend. It turns out the Matt’s dad is from my small town and my mom knew him and his brother when she was growing up. While I was there I met Matt’s cousin. So my mom made me promise promise promise that I would vote for Matt.

I hate lying to my mom.

Any word on song choices tonight? Wiki had nothing.

I also think Scott is the least talented of the final 8. He is definitely the most boring.

It’s Scott’s time. Actually, he would have been a worthy candidate in any of the last 3-4 weeks, but most of the low hanging fruit has been picked by now.

I agree that Scott is the weakest, but I thought that Anoop would be the one to go last week. Scott has the sympathy vote and Anoop hasn’t been performing very well, either.

When I noticed in the TV listings that tonight’s show was down to 1 hour, my reaction was “thank god”. Which leads me to ask myself just why I watch this show…

Allegedly spoiled list posted on TWOP:

Kris - Heaven
Lil - Let’s Hear It For the Boy
Adam - Edge of Seventeen
Scott - You’re the Inspiration
Anoop - Who’s Johnny
Matt - Part Time Lover
Allison - Tears in Heaven
Danny - Crazy Little Thing Called Love

There is now a counter-spoiler posted for Kris saying he’s going to do “All She Wants to Do Is Dance” with an electric guitar.
If the first list is accurate, Scott isn’t doing himself any favors. I’m starting to think he just has crap taste in music.

I can’t picture Allison’s song choice – if she pulls it off, I’ll be impressed. If I had matched songs to singers, I’d have given her the song Adam is reported to have chosen.

That is the last song I would have expected from Allison. Adam’s choice (if true) should be awesome.

My current expectation is that Scott should go this week, Anoop next and Lil or Danny after that. Barring any world shattering performances, of course.

I have never heard Anoops song before. Did I have to be in a coma not hear this song before?

Allison’s choice is a bit strange and if she doesn’t do it well, she will be ripped by the judges for poor song choice. Might we hear another heckler go “BROKEN RECORD”.

Scott, another wishy-washy song he can do on the piano.

I think Kris will do either song well, but I’d like to see the second spoiler.

And what are Lil and Matt thinking with those songs choices? But I like them both.

Which I think is a fair criticism of the judging this year. Why is the contestant’s song choice relevant? There’s no reason the judges can’t judge the performances on its merits: did the singer express the emotion well, was it in a good key for them, were they on pitch. In other words – try to listen to the song, and act like they’d never heard it a million times before.

Ever see Short Circut? It was the movie’s theme song.

I’m kind of torn on that. I completely agree that if someone is competent, or even good, they should be able to sing anything well, whether it be through singing it as done before, or changing it up.

On the other hand, I can support playing to their own strengths, and the style of artist they are choosing to be, by picking a certain kind of song that showcases their style.

That being said, “Who’s Johnny?” I put that in with “Rockin’ Robin” as a song no one in their right mind would pick.

I’m flailing my fists at the wind here, but internet speculation isn’t a “spoiler.” Besides, “Edge of 17” is the wrong year for Adam to sing it. On the other hand, it’s random enough to be accurate, and like with Opry night*, they might be flexible with the rules.

*Johnny Cash was not a member of the Opry and wasn’t even welcome there.

I hope Allison does “Smells like Teen Spirit” and Danny does “The Rose.”

Scott needs to leave. Matt will follow.

“Crazy Little Thing Called Love”? You really want to be compared to Freddie Mercury? Plus, I think that song could be a bit boring and repetitive in places. You have to have a very interesting and expressive voice to make it work. At least with the shortened versions they’re forced to sing, it won’t be TOO repetitive.

Lil’s choice sounds like she’s trying to do something “young” and “fun”. What have the judges been telling her to do? I forget, sometimes they’re just all over the place with their suggestions from week to week.

“Part-Time Lover”. That’s gonna invite comparisons to Stevie Wonder, in a song that Stevie just completely kicked ass on. Still, it really provides more interesting vocal opportunities than the Queen song above.

Bad song choice for Alison. Alison, Alison. . .WHY? **Horrible **choice for Anoop. There’s two of your bottom three right there, if they really use those songs.

ETA: Scott needed to go home weeks ago.
