David Archuleta still breathes too much when he sings. The song itself is actually OK.
Simon called Danny ‘clumsy’ and Danny stated he didn’t know exactly what Simon meant, but that he would work on it. Ryan asked Simon to clarify, Simon pitched a fit and told Ryan to get back to the contestants, and after a bit of an awkward pause Danny was pronounced safe. It was… odd.
And I loved the song when it came out too, but holy COW she was scary-botoxed.
sobs quietly
Aw, it’s okay… he made it through to the tour!
OK, so who went? I missed it.
Anoop is gone.
Thanks. Anoop surprised me in recent weeks, but he wasn’t going to make it in to the final two no matter what. Lil chased away my early faith in her. They’ll both be far better off than they were when they started, so it’s hard to feel too bad for anyone.
Dang.
I hope Lil gets back to her Bluesy/ R&B self, and has some success.
I was indifferent to Anoop, until the past couple of weeks. But I think he sings better than atleast two of the remaining people.
Aww! I think Allison and Anoop both deserved to stay longer, so I was upset with the bottom. Neither should win (although Allison is good enough), but I wanted Matt to GET OUT! I love Anoop though. Not the best of the group, but it wasn’t his time yet.
sigh. I know. Matt must have some devoted voters.
I would have preferred to see Matt and Danny go before Anoop (there goes my triple-A final three) but he was just marking time. After all the cannon fodder are voted off (last one: Scott) then the ones who show no real development or improvement (or get worse, as in Lil’s case) start to go, until you end up with the top 2 or 3 who show real promise. I’m just hoping that America finally notices that Danny is exactly the same as he was from day 1, and all of his songs sound exactly the same, and that sameness is not interesting even a tiny little bit. Gah.
If I’m choosing now which would probably get me more points in the prediction game than I will end up getting, they’re going down as:
- Matt
- Allison
- Danny
- Kris
- Adam
That said, anything but an Adam/Allison final two would just be weird. Can you see Adam doing chummy duets with any of the other contestants on results night? Eesh. Adam and Allison would be a hoot together; Danny and Adam would be oil-and-water nauseating. And we’re all agreed that there’s no chance Adam isn’t winning the whole thing right?
Regarding Adam as the great savior of Idol - sure, maybe and I look forward to findng out. I initially found his style incredibly annoying and deemed him a “performer, not a musician.” He hasn’t really disproved that, but he is such an incredibly talented performer, I don’t much care if he can create a note of his own music. That said, it’s really his performances off Idol (search YouTube) that convinced me he’s got a lot to offer the post-Idol world. That version of “Crazy,” for example*, and that insane glam-rock musical he helped write/choreograph. If nothing else, Adam’s concert tours will be something. No guitar and bare stage for him, no siree. If David Cook is currently touring like John Mayer, Adam will tour like Madonna. Now I might actually pay to see that.
*Honest, if you haven’t seen this and you’re at all an Adam fan you have to look it up. His versions of songs are my worst earworms. He’s got such a knack for it.
Judges have said many times that a performer should make the song their own. Adam has done that better than any other idol ever did. He is not my taste ,but I think he is the best .
Unless he’s singing songs like ‘Tracks of my Tears’ or ‘Mad World’ magnificently?
I appreciate that Adam interacts beautifully with the band and could easily bring on an amazing show of dancers, special effects and backing singers.
But don’t underestimate him singing unplugged. ![]()
P.S. they haven’t fully updated the online odds market yet, but it reads:
- Adam
- Danny
- Kris
- Allison
- Matt
Intradehas slightly different standings:
- Adam
- Danny
- Allison
- Matt
- Kris
Wow- I’m embarrassed for KC. They should have brought it down a key or two; he just couldn’t hit those notes. He was sucking for air by the end. That was a disgrace.
Lil was unusual. She hit her stride early and actually got worse week after week.
I like Adam and will be pleased when he wins, but he doesn’t set my heart on fire the way David Cook did. I love. Love. LOVE David Cook, he grabbed my heart and squeezed it last year. (I cried when he won.) Adam is pretty and shiny and talented and a star and the best of the lot, but he doesn’t …move me…I loved Bo Bice much the same way as I did DC. I thought his a cappella number was awesome, and am sorry HE dropped off the face of the earth, too. Matt annoys me, he’s got a face only his mother can love (yes, I’m shallow).
When I’m watching the show, I have to remind myself sometimes that it’s American Idol. They’re not looking for the best musician or singer. They’re looking for the ones who can move product. Musical ability is secondary to audience pull, and Adam clearly seems to do that best of all the ones I saw last week.
It’s the same idea as boy bands. Sure, you might occasionally get a guy like Justin Timberlake who has real talent, but in the end it takes a back seat to performance and audience appeal.
If you guys haven’t heard the iTunes studio recordings of these people, they’re very illuminating. Among the things I discovered:
-
Kris sounds better than anyone in the studio. His voice is much better than you can hear on the TV show, probably because his low register is very good and it doesn’t come through well in a compressed TV audio feed (and, because the AI sound people are hacks). You can hear Falling Slowly here.
-
Adam sounds pretty good as well, but all of his tracks are WAY overcompressed - uncomfortably so. I don’t know whether it’s the sound they were going for, or they had to do it to keep his voice under control, or what. But one side effect is that he’s not shrieky at all, and I could imagine listening to an album full of his material.
-
Danny Gokey sounds very average. His voice just doesn’t come off well on CD.
-
Alexis Grace sounded fantastic. I wish now she’d stuck around longer. She was doomed by a bad song choice, not by lack of talent.
-
Michael Sarver sounds better than I would have expected. Much better than he sounded on the show.
In the end, listening to the recordings just reinforced by belief that the two real stars on this show are Kris and Adam. I’ll give Kris the advantage because he’s also a really good songwriter. I found a couple of original songs he did, and they’re quite good.
I missed the end of the results show last night. Did they say what next week’s theme is going to be?
