And this is one of the many things I like about Connie, who in my own demented mind is head and shoulders above the rest, clearly the best of the lot. He didn’t pick “safe” songs. He took chances. Who else on the show had enough sack to cover both Queen and The Partridge Family? But it was the showtunes episode that clinched it for me. While A-Fed was climbing every mountain (puke) and Vonzell was loving people (wretch), Connie did Funny Valentine, and nailed it but good.
Yeah, it’s too bad there was no one to smack Constantine upside the head and say “No man! Don’t do Nickleback, it’s suicide!”.
He was certainly the tallest.
Nah. Carrie is the regular Joe (Jane), farm girl, loves mama, bare feet and l’il furry critters. She’s Ellie May Clampitt and I love her for it.
Scott is belligerent, painful to watch and must own a genuine copy of The Ninth Gate of the Kingdom of Shadows.

He’s right, you know.
Well, Dung, your thread is almost 6 pages!
Must be my sparkling personality.
I think I’ll let you have the thread back next week!
I agree that the individual parts were horrible, but the parts they sang together were OK. Maurice Gibb must have done a few crypt flips, however.
I never disliked Con, though his fans on some of the boards are scary as hell, and I had predicted that he would make the final two.
That said, he was the worst singer on Tuesday, I thought. Scott was bad and listless, but Con was screechy and out of tune and urk.
From the beginning, I’ve said that Scott’s voice is pretty, but it’s very much not my type of voice. I don’t like pretty voices, I like gritty, rough voices. I like the Fantasias, not the LaToyas. But that’s my preference. I can understand why people like Scott’s voice. If you compare him to Con, you’ll hear that Con’s voice is very affected and discordant. Some people like that. I don’t mind it. But it’s not a “good voice” in the way that a lot of people would probably define that term.
Carrie, soulless she-bot that she is, has a “good voice.” Con is a good entertainer and a fame whore. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
I think Scott’s had at least as many good performances as Constantine, who I have disliked intensely just about every week. His Bohemian Rhapsody was really good, but the rest of the time he’s just too much of a ham. And there have been several weeks when Scott did a really good job. He doesn’t belong in the top 5 (or 8), but he’s not as irritating as Constantine.
I was more outraged when Jennifer was voted off last year, I’d really wanted to see more of her, she was really picking up steam when she left.
He may not technically be the best, but he knows how to sell a wrong note. When he’s “pitchy”, it adds character to the performance. When the others are "pitchy’, it makes my ears bleed.
There’s the Dopers For Carrie mantra. Tshirts will be distributed before the next show.
As I said to my girlfriend (who was rooting for Connie), “He did sing Nickelback.” She nodded in understanding.
Scott isn’t just a bad singer though, fessie. He’s surly and inarticulate and make-believe ghetto and self-absorbed.
I thought it was very disrespectful to his parents to talk about giving his son “the things he never had.” Well, it looks like the boy had a roof over his head and three (or eight) meals a day, so what’s he complaining about? Not having a super-Nintendo when he was 12 and a beemer when he turned 16? What a brat.
Also, he claps for himself.
Also, he mumbles into his chin when he gets negative criticism, and he sulks, and he looks like he might sock someone.
Also, and most importantly, he sucks.
Yes, but one of two things is going on:
- Lots and lots of people are voting for him (or not so many people are voting for him multiple times) with the result that he is still around in the Final Five. We cannot assume WHY they are voting for him. Just that they are.
OR - FOX (or the program producers or a combination of both) is totally ignoring the votes and manipulating the results for their own benefit. What’s the benefit? Buzz for one thing. . . and an increased number of eyeballs for the next week’s shows.
I would hate to think that it’s #2. But I am totally perplexed by #1.
Not being up on the pop music that the kids today are listening to, I don’t really understand this comment. Is Nickelback a sucky band or something? Judging Connie on his own merits, I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. Enough so that I rewound to watch it a second time.
Scott’s a bit socially retarded, I’ll give you that. I think he’s done remarkably well for himself, given his low-class-ness. It’s true that when he quits singing and starts talking, he sounds bad. But I do like his voice. I hope he runs into the right people & develops some social graces, but it’s probably unlikely. Reminds me of Mike Tyson in a way.
Bo’s still my babe. I’m liking that facial hair!
Not the first time I’ve heard this allegation, but could it be true? Wouldn’t this violate the quiz show laws enacted in the 60s?
Well, I’d go so far as to say he’s still (pretty much) a breath of fresh air on that show. But that’s the qualifier: on that show. It’s easy to seem “different” or “edgy” when you’re up against teenyboppers hoping to be the next Celine or Whitney or Josh Grobin. But by any vaguely normal pop music standard, he’s definitely stale. If this was the 70s - or even the early 90s, with all that Black Crowes/shit-rock revival stuff - he might seem like a “rocker”. I’m just surprised that so many people seem to give him that credit outside the bounds of AI (in the larger music world, I mean). I’m not saying he can’t sing. I’m just saying that you can walk into any bar anywhere in America and find someone who can sing just as well if not better. Although, like I said, compared to the other contestants, he’s definitely the standout now, if not necessarily for his talent.
Scott isn’t really lower class. He’s from the burbs. It’s all an act. Shaker Heights is actually a pretty nice burb. He was probably stable middle class but went to school with rich preppies and got the idea he was underprivileged.
There was a story two years ago about how most of America is fat and voted for Ruben because he was fat. I thought it was ludicrous, but the endurance of Scott makes me think there might be something to it.
This is not a quiz show. It’s a talent show. And I don’t know if the rules apply here.
