American Idol 4/26

You owe yourself to hear the original by Martina McBride. It’s a fabulous song. Carrie tried her best, but there is NO ONE out there that’s got the pipes Martina’s got. Whitney Houston would be hard pressed to match her.

I’d rank them -

  1. Bo
  2. Anthony
  3. Vonzell
  4. Constantine
  5. Carrie
  6. Scott

But, I think the bottom three will be Scott, Anthony, and Vonzell. Scott will go home.

I guess I’d go with that rating. I missed the first two performances but what I heard in the little clips at the end of the show didn’t sound so great.

Scott MUST leave.

I liked Anthony tonight but not the others so much.

If there’s any justice in the world, Scott will go home. However, I fear that Scott is this year’s Jasmine. I won’t be sad if Anthony goes, but he did deliver his best performance yet. Voting off one of the other four would just be absurd.

I’ve been an admirer of Constantine, but he was indisputably really, really bad tonight. How would it be “absurd” to vote off someone who was really, really bad, and likely the worst vocalist of the night?

I’m sick of Cartman too, but it’s a sequential-elimination system, and if you blow chunks one night you might be off the next. C’est la format. Constantine was really bad, and if he gets voted off he gets what he deserves.

It would be absurd given that Constantine has in past weeks given very memorable performances, while Scott hasn’t performed well once.

In order of performance:

Carrie: I like her better like this, when she’s not being a kewpie doll. Although her bio really ground my gears. Okay, so the town itself is small. Doesn’t mean she never left the city limits before AI. She made it sound like she had to hitch up the wagon and drive fifty miles to the gen’l store.

Bo: Awesome as always.

Vonzell: Smooth, and she got that push she needs if she’s going to pull ahead of Carrie.

Anthony: Well! For once, he made me sit up and take notice! Sang a torch song as it was meant to be sung. I had been hoping he would go and Scott would stay, just for the drama, but now I wouldn’t feel right about that.

Connie: Well, I liked the hair flip at the end. And being called a poor imitation of Nickelback? Ouch.

Scott: Great: another begging song. Very weak, and that one note made me cringe. It’s over. Simon said “Pack your bags” to Leah LaBelle, and she was out the following night. And this is the same week John Stevens was voted off last year.

Ugh. Really, what a crapfest from start to finish. I think this was the least watchable week ever. Nobody did anything remotely interesting, song choices were horrible, everyone seemed tired. If it keeps going like this, I don’t care who wins. Hopefully next week somebody will hit one out of the park.

I liked Constantine’s performance. Maybe I’m the only one… I know it wasn’t this big technical song, but I liked it.

Bo did well.

Vonzell took on a really hard song & did okay, so she should be in first place for difficulty.

Carrie sounded all right, but how many times has she sung Martina now?

Anthony did well! Really well! He’s back in his element, apparently.

Scott had this really nice tone for once, between the awfully off ones. It’s not that the other singers were perfect, just that he has a reputation to live down. And that song was a bad bad choice.

And this show could be so much better if Scott & Carrie were somehow replaced by Jessica & Nadia.

I’m just saying.

Change that to Jessica and Nikko and I’m right with you.

Ineresting how paula didn’t love every performance. I guess sobering up brings you to your senses. I like the old Paula, she was far more interesting.

I’ve always hated the song Connie sang, and his performance was …meh. What would he do if there were no cameras to stare at?? Look away once in a while, please!

A batch of random comments.

  1. Why isn’t Carrie on Nashville Star where she belongs? Isn’t that where her target audience is? I couldn’t understand half of what she sang for the twanging.

  2. Whatever Constantine sang was the worst song choice ever. I like him, but he sucked ass last night. I just hope people are voting for the performer and not the performance, or he’s gone.

  3. AFed really knocked my socks off! I had never heard anything worth hearing out of him til then. If he sticks to those type of songs he could stay around awhile.

  4. Vonzell, solid as always. I can’t remember for the life of me what Bo sang. Apparently I’m the only female watching the show who is indifferent to his wiles. Scott did a fair job, that slimy bastard. Did someone tell him to keep a lid on his attitude? I didn’t see it last night. I’m afraid Simon’s comment will wind up doing Scott a favor by rallying the fans, as someone said upthread.

So far, only Carrie and Connie haven’t been in the bottom 3. I still dunno what will happen tonight.

I guess I’m one of the few who didn’t like Anthony. His high notes are screeched. There’s no voice quality up there in that range for him. It sounds to me like he’s straining to hit them. He gets the note right, but even bagpipes get the notes right and they sound like fingernails on a blackboard.

But I thought Carrie did very well. As usual, a beautiful voice, and this time, she was much more animated. Much less of the standing still hip swaying. There were even facial expressions. I suspect she’s getting some coaching in that regard.

Vonzell, to me, is an almost-there-but-not-quite singer. She doesn’t really get into the soul of the song, to me. A decent voice, and a beautiful face, but it’s like there’s no there there.

Constantine.

Scott has a beautiful voice so long as he stays between middle C and the A above it. His falsetto is extremely weak, and his low tones are toneless.

And Randy… pitchy… stop it.

If Carrie wants to sing country songs on American Idol she really needs to pick the country songs that crossover to the pop charts (well, except for those Shania Twain ones). Not everyone likes country and she’s really narrowing her audience by picking the ones that the average non-country fan will have never heard of and be turned off by. I do not like the really twangy country songs and I never heard of that one. She can power vocal but she’s just not interesting and I think her song choice may have hurt her. (Although, MacArthur Park really should have hurt her).

Constantine should have learned not to try rock. Although some might argue that the Nickleback song is pop, it at least has a rock sound and Connie just isn’t as good at that as Bo. He just couldn’t get it. Besides you’d think he’d also know that a lot of people find Nickleback and Creed to be a joke.

Vonzell looked very pretty. I wasn’t familiar with her song and I didn’t think it was her best. Still I hope she’s safe because I agree she was still one of the better of the night.

I thought Anthony sounded good. I didn’t know that was a Celine Dion song, apparently he’s wanted to sing that for a while so I would guess he’s sung it before and is more familiar and practiced with it.

Scott did seem to have toned the attitude down a bit but that whole “he represents the average guy” bit was too much. He doesn’t represent me. Also I think he said something like “if you walk down the street in Cleveland you’ll see a million of him”, if that’s so remind me never to go there. I also kept looking for signs that his father was mean and unsupportive (like he inferred in his initial audition), he didn’t come off that way. Dad wasn’t as glurgey as mom but he didn’t seem like he put the kid down. Then there’s the song … he just can’t do Luther. That wasn’t good, there was no feeling there, it was bland.

Bo … I think you all know how I feel about him. I was a little worried he was going to fling the mic stand at the band and hurt someone but other than that he was great. Except for the part about having a girlfriend. :frowning:

Bottom 3: I agree with others who say it will be Scott, Connie and Carrie.

Who will go, I am really hoping it’s Scott but I have been hoping that for weeks now. Connie and Carrie have been better and don’t deserve to go yet.

First of all, I hated the theme tonight. Being an old fart, I didn’t recognize one song except for Martina. I can appreciate a good performance, regardless, but sometimes its nice to have a frame of reference. Let’s hope they do better with the show theme next week. I kinda miss the guest star theme shows. Not every week, but one or two would break things up. I didn’t think anyone was particularly great tonight. I don’t really get the major props for A-fed or Vonzel. And I like Bo, but I didn’t really care for that song or performance.

Secondly, I wish the judges would make up their minds about Carrie. When she doesn’t sing a country song, they generally say she should stick with her strengths. When she does, they pound her for singing country and say she should show more versatility! I distinctly remember Simon saying something about sticking to her country roots and and now he says he doesn’t get country? He’s done that at least one other time during this competition. Mixed signals as far as I’m concerned. I like Carrie. I think she’s a beautiful young woman and I love her voice. I especially liked the straight hair look tonight. I know I’m from Texas, but BDH (Big Dallas Hair) never did it for me. I agree that Martina is hard to beat, but I thought she did a pretty good job with that song and deserved a better response than she got.

And I hate to tell you guys this, but country music is, in fact, a legitimate music form. It hard for some you to accept, but its been pretty popular for about a hundred years now, so don’t be surprised that it’s still popular, even in the 21st century.

IMO, I don’t think Carrie could make it on Nashville Star. Many of the performers on that show are much, much better than on AI, and her stage presence (or lack thereof) would really hurt her on Star.

Country is, as MikeTheTiger said, a legitimate form of music. Not only that, but it’s quite popular across America, not simply in one region. To the extent that Scott benefits from the “I love Jesus and I don’t have internet so I don’t know about his torrid past” crowd, Carrie benefits from her very good performances in a musical style that much of the country enjoys.

And as for picking country songs that cross over, much of Martina’s music has crossed over, including the song Carrie sang last night (at least in my market, I’ve heard it on the pop station). Bottom line: if Carrie wins, it’s going to be because more of America likes country music than will admit it.

I didn’t think anyone was particularly good last night. A couple of them butchered songs I really like (I’m looking at you, Bo and Constantine!) and that always annoys me.

Anthony gets a billion minus points for singing Celine Dion. She and anyone else who tries to sing her songs should be dragged into the street and beaten with a fence post wrapped in barbed wire.

Now that I’ve gotten that off of my chest, the best of the bad were Vonzell and Bo, I thought. Scott, Constantine, and Anthony are my bottom three. Scott should go (even though I despised Anthony).

I caught only the very end, so I voted for Bo, despite his poor clothing choice. What the hell was that, anyway? Blah.

And holy crap, was Constantine actually singing Nickleback or was I imagining things? What a joke.

Scott has to gooooooo. Enough already.
