American Idol 4/4 & 4/5: Country

Can’t say much that hasn’t been said already.

Bottom of the pack:

Taylor
Paris
Top:

Chris
Bucky
Katharine

The rest were respectable but didn’t knock my socks off. I agree that Ace did surprisingly well (at least he wasn’t visibly shaking) but vocally he can’t touch the others.

Bucky would do much better if he’d learn to enunciate. I couldn’t understand half of what he was singing.

Kenny Rogers - I agree too much plastic surgery. I kinda wished someone would have done “She Believes in Me.” It’s one of my favorite country songs.

Well, they were quick in announcing the theme…

Are they doing this because they know the information will leak anyways?

Well, it doesnt surprise me that those are the bottom three, the far side…

Ouch, I was wrong…

WTF?

Please let it be Elliot.

Awwww. Bye Mandisa, you were one of my favorites.

It was the jeans.

Seriously, I used to like her, but she hasn’t imperssed me in weeks.

Dialidol.com called it…pretty impressive.

Awwww. Mandisa was robbed. Of course, I didn’t vote so I can’t complain too loudly.

I thought it was cute how during her final song, Chris didn’t sing along because he probably didn’t know the words, Kellie was singing her heart out, and Bucky had to stop when he realized that he was singing “Any man of mine…”

Missed the episode cause I was watching Lost and tuned in to see the tail of Mandisas last song. Can I get a recap of the bottom three?

Mandisa, Paris, and Elliot.

I don’t think I’ll miss Mandisa.

Elliot’s kinda surprising. His was one of the stronger performances last night. Mandisa and Paris? They’ve been flat the last couple of shows, but I didn’t think it’d be enough to push them to the bottom.

I wonder if Mandisa’s getting voted out now is in part a backlash for her comments last week about God being bigger than anyone’s “lifestyle.” It didn’t occur to me when it happened, but there has been a lot of Internet chatter about it this week.

Well, it was disappointing because Ace, Bucky or Kellie didn’t go home. I’ve liked Mandisa in the past but I haven’t voted for her recently and had I voted last night I wouldn’t have voted for her. She did kind of lose me on the whole god thing. That’s fine if people want to have their beliefs but don’t expect everyone else to share them and don’t harp on it all the time. Still I expected her to last a little longer, but she had a career as a backup singer before this and she can always continue with that.

I think the categories and some weak performances helped a lot. The week Bucky came out flat was the week Kevin came out flatter. The week Ace and Kellie came out flat was the week that Lisa bombed out. This week, the country category really helped Ace, Bucky, and Kellie and seemed to hamstring Mandisa and Paris.

Huh wha?

Can someone clue me in to a quote and context please?

I don’t remember the comment, but I will say that I know friends of mine who soured on Mandisa because they considered her a “Jesus freak”.

Ah, I didn’t know that. Being a backup singer seems exactly right for her. She’s a good singer, but I don’t think amazing enough to be a star on her own. She’s done very well making her mark on AI, but it makes sense that this is the end of the line for her.

I still wish it had been Pickler…

Hey, Jesus people vote, too! I figured the blatant religiosity was a plus. Of course, after her blatantly Christian song last week, & Katharine’s stray line about God’s plan, maybe the Christniques have decided to combine Faith & Lust, while the non-religious were fearing Mandisa’s win would mean an all Contemporary Christian album…?

Eh, whatever. More likely, the doldrummy sameness of performances the last two weeks, the lack of a hated Covais-like figure (yes I know Ace is still in it, but he’s not crapping all over the songs as much right now), & the contempt of familiarity blew away a big advantage of Mandisa’s. See, I think that early on, she got votes from people for whom she wasn’t a fave, for being memorable & not sucking as bad as the Really Bad Singers. She had broad-based support (as opposed to support based in “broads,” like Chris has :stuck_out_tongue: ) in the winnowing phase. This week, there was no generally agreed-upon Really Bad Singer, & people were trying to save favorites. Mandisa wasn’t enough people’s fave, apparently.

So now Paris is the Great Black Hope. Huh. Who’da thunk?

Also, anyone else think that the 3 groups of 3 were a tipoff as to rankings?Taylor & Chris clearly get massive power-voting throughout the 2-hour window, which is unusual. I haven’t been voting for Kellie, but I imagine she does too.
Ace, Bucky, & Katharine have all been in the bottom 3 before. Seemed probable that they would be again. Except Paris wasn’t that impressive last night, & Bucky was. And shouldn’t Katharine get a bump after last week? She is the Great Yankee Hope at this point. And Ace has the fangirls, & I don’t expect him to wash out on a week when he doesn’t stink up the joint. So, all of them?
Elliott, Mandisa, Paris. Yeah, I looked at that group & thought, that could be Bottom 3. Then I thought, hey, I could be wrong.
Is it too early to start picking Queen songs for the Top 8?

“This song goes out to everyone who wants to be free! Your addiction, your lifestyle, your situation may be big. But God is bigger!”

She shouted it out when she first came on stage to sing her gospel song last week. There has been a lot of internet discussion of exactly what she meant by “lifestyle.” Regardless, the overt preachiness turned a lot of people off.
