Here it is, Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. EST, and the latest American Idol thread is on page 4 of Cafe Society. Until now, that is.
I shouldn’t be starting the thread this week, people; I’m hardly even following the show this season. But I will say I’m glad of two things: first, that the character most reminiscent of Mackayla Gordon is gone already; and second, that I missed her farewell rendering of “Last Dance.”
Seriously, is there going to be a thread today, or is everybody just going to buy a DVD of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and blow off the show tonight?
I’m having trouble remembering why I was so gung-ho about Paris originally. She’s been so mediocre. Can’t she find a middle ground between “Bubbe Ruth works up the nerve to sing her favorite song at Danny’s Bar Mitzvah” and “Dancing with the Stars”?
I am not a fan of the dress-over-jeans look. It makes her look inexplicably and tragically hippy. (And anyway, didn’t Nina Garcia tell Kara Saun it was “over” last year at about this time?) But I do appreciate how well Paris can pull off the turquoise eye shadow. That is not a fashion statement for the weak. She’s cute, and an OK dancer. I wish she sang a little better tonight, but I already know she’s not the worst we’re going to hear.
Cool. Lisa is about the last person I would have expected could pick up a guitar and play “Purple Haze.” Hendrix is my all time favorite musician. Lisa just got bumped up a notch in my esteem.
Simon is exactly right about Lisa: She keeps singing all these too-old, grown-up songs, and right now she looks like she’s about 35 years old. What Lisa really needs to do is crack open the Debbie Gibson catalog. Is she adverse to dancing or happiness or something? All her songs are so serious.
