So charisma and style are important, voice not so much. Right.
It should have been Stefano.
I’m annoyed.
A healthy “fuck you” to the nitwit who posted the result on facebook moments after the fact.
Yes, silly me for being on there when I hadn’t watched the show yet, but come on…are you really unaware of time-shifting or west coast viewership?
Are you familiar with pop music at all? I would go so far as to say most of the pop stars of the last 50 years weren’t wonderful singers.
Meh… that save would have come in pretty handy here if you ask me.
But then, I will say… I think Steven Tyler had laid out some serious undertones in his comments about, well… passion. Pia had the beauty, and the voice, but the passion was a bit lacking.
Sad to see her go… I would have bet she would have been in the top 3. Ah well.
I’d like to see Scotty, Casey, and Stefano go next.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that is totally creeped out by Jacob. I sure wish it would have been him that got booted tonight.
Bah, that sucks. Better luck next week.
Well, there you are. Now, Rosemary Clooney; she was a pop star. Kids today.
Are we already forgetting Johnny Bravo?
You Fit The Suit
There have been some great singers in rock/pop, but most of the best and most popular were far more likely to have relatively good voices that were interesting. And a personality to match.
Pia had a great voice, but very little personality.
No kidding. I thought she had the pipes to win it all. Another Jennifer Hudson moment.
Bouncing the woman with the best voice in the competition – possibly the best voice AI has ever had – is conclusive proof that the average American Idol voter is spectacularly stupid.
On the upside, Pia now has several weeks to do nothing with her waking hours except prepare for the upcoming AI tour, develop her stage presence, polish her songs, and absolutely dominate every concert the group does this summer before going into the studio and taking over Celine’s place as Mega-Selling Über-Balladeer of the Universe.
P.S. Jacob sucks.
And here I actually thought Pia’s performance was quite an improvement over her usual bore-me-to-tears routine. I bet you if Pia wore Thursday’s outfit on Wednesday it would have been Stefano getting the boot.

Reminds of me of Michael Scott. “The doctors tried to save her life. They did everything they could…and she’s going to be ok.”
I’ve been out of AI for awhile but watch again the last few weeks. Am I the only one who noticed Paul can’t actually sing?
Or the doctor on Arrested Development. I’m very sorry, we’ve lost him…no really, we have no idea where he went.
Nah. Pia was boring as hell. There are tons of people with great voices who don’t become pop stars because they lack an “x” factor. Pia is one of them, I’m afraid. She’d belt out a tune like a pro, then just listen to the criticism and nod and smile, nod and smile. Zzzzzzzzz. There was nothing special about her that would have spurred me to pick up the phone or fire up the laptop in order to cast a vote for her. Honestly curious: Did you cast a vote for her?
Me, I didn’t vote for anyone, because I DVR the show and watch it the next day, after the voting window has closed. And that’s an issue with shows like AI that rely on people watching live. I rarely watch any show live anymore because of the commercial fillers; AI is worse because half of their content is filler! If I can condense a 1:30 show into :45 minutes, no way am I going to watch it live, even if it means missing the 2 hour voting timeframe.
Which brings me to problem #2 with the whole AI process. Early in the season, I did vote once, via the internet. After I selected a contestant, there was a prompt asking me if I wanted to vote again. Rinse & repeat. After a dozen votes, I got tired of selecting names and logged out without ever being told that I’d exhausted my votes.
What kind of bogus system allows voters to cast umpteen ballots? Do you know who has the spare time to cast vote after vote? Teenagers. I can’t imagine very many 35+ year old viewers have the time, inclination or patience to vote more than once or twice for their favorite. So that ultimately means that singers who appeal to 15 year old girls are going to win.
Which explains why Pia is gone and Stefano is still in it.
We talked about this last year, and the answer to your question is…“well, duh”
Think about it. 15 year old girls will vote for the person (or people) they like literally hundreds of times, while 35 year old soccer moms might vote 3 or 4 times.
Now fast forward a few years later when the winner releases an album an goes on tour.
The soccer mom might buy the single on iTunes, but the now 16 or 17 year old will buy the single, maybe a few other songs, listen to it on the Top40 station (making the ad space more valuable), watch the MTV awards to see him/her, pay $65 to see her in concert, buy a $35 concert shirt, buy the next 3 singles that come out etc…
It makes sense, the people who vote more are probably the people that are going to wind up spending more money on the person if they win.
ETA, we always have to remember, this is a pop competition. It’s truly a “whole package” type of thing. If someone’s voice is lacking buy they make up for it in looks, they can still win. If their looks aren’t so good, but they sound ok and they can dance, they’ll do fine.
It should have been Stefano or Paul. Sheesh. Pia has a great voice, though, and I’m sure she’ll get a deal with someone.
Poppy was a bit sloppy. He doesn’t even have to try to sing or even get most of the words right–just shows up and approximates a song. Must be a nice gig.
Then the judges shouldn’t act so damn surprised, and even angry, at the results, followed by “This is why it’s so important to vote!” Unless they limit the number of votes people can cast, then the results are pretty meaningless except to determine who is the most attractive to 15 year old girls.
At this stage of the game, it doesn’t really matter who gets booted.
As past years have shown, the winners do not necessarily have a great career and many “losers” go on to do quite well.
Pia is good - granted, I think she has the personality and charisma of a dial tone, but her voice is quite nice and lack of personality and charisma hasn’t hurt Celine Dion.
If you think of the national exposure at this point in time, all of the contestants have an equal shot of fame and glory after this season ends. Scotty should do well in Country markets no matter when he gets the boot.
As far as I am concerned, the season is pretty much finished and I will watch out of idle (idol) curiosity, just to hear the songs and see who scratches their way to the top - but again, that is no guarantee of success for whomever is crowned the winner.
Slightly off-topic, but last year’s winner of America’s Got Talent, Michael Grimm, just recently performed one night at a local’s casino here in Las Vegas (Green Valley Ranch), in the ballroom - tickets started at $29. Not exactly a rip-roaring start to a career. Also, I see that Simon Cowell is offering a whopping $5 million prize to the winner of his first season of his US version of X-Factor - now THAT would be worth winning, even if you never had a hit song after the show.
