American Idol 5/1 & 2

Tears of joy, perhaps

That was absolutely the right two to go home.
By the way, has anyone mentioned yet that Phil looks like this guy? ?

Phil looks like Gollum.

Lakisha will be gone next week.

So does Phil shave his head because he has a receding hairline? The bald look didn’t work for him, but it’s probably better than the alternative. I’d forgotten that he was the one with the new baby.

Of the four who are left, I think Blake has the most engaging personality, then Jordin.

I love Lakisha’s voice but I still think she’s a bit dull.

I didn’t pick up on any tension from Melinda when Ryan called her down, didn’t see any signs of relief or surprise when told she was safe, and didn’t see any tears when Phil and Chris left. To me, she looks like she expects to win. Maybe she took Simon’s comment about false modesty to heart.

I was sorry to see Chris go, but then after Phil, there wasn’t anyone I would have replaced him with. The next to go needs to be Jordin because of her limited vocal range and life experience. And then LaKisha because of her very limited style range.

That leaves Blake and Melinda in the final. I hope Blake wins, even though I’m a big fan of Melinda. Her future on the R&B charts is sealed. Blake needs this. He’s too artistically controversial for a big label to pick him up, and he’s far too talented to just let disappear. The AI contract is a perfect solution for him, guaranteeing him exposure until he can establish his own rep. But he can’t be lazy about it. After all, Taylor who?

I think it all depends on what songs she picks. She motivated me to vote for her after singing “This Ain’t a Love Song.” The previous week she didn’t. I think she’s very lucky that last week’s score was combined with this week’s. Maybe this week she’ll listen to Barry Gibb when he advises her.

They’ve all got to be careful now and pick wisely because each of the remaining 4 have the ability to bring down the house.

Oh frabjous day!

I’m sure Blake will have a respectable 1-2 album recording career after he’s voted off next week. I still have no reason to think he’s ever polled higher than 4th.

I would have predicted Chris and Lakisha, but this is good too.

Now this is interesting. The diva vote will be spit 3 ways and Blake will get all the teenybopper votes. I think the final 2 will be Blake/Jordin or Jordin/Melinda. As long as Melinda picks interesting songs and doesn’t bore me, she’ll stick around.

With Barry Gibb on next week’s show, Blake should do well. Actually, they all should do well, I think.

Did anyone catch what they were saying in the group hug at the very end? Someone left a microphone on - was it anything good?

If DialIdol is any indication he has, and frequently. DI has had him polling better than Melinda for the last few weeks.

Even though I’ve never been a fan of Phil, I have to say I enjoyed his final sing out. Not the vocals so much but his positive attitude, working the crowd with hugs & handshakes, smiling and enjoying the ride. He didn’t break voice or miss anything except for a moment when he was hugging his wife, then he crossed the stage to embrace the rest of the group. I thought it was a classy swan song. No bitterness, no tears, none of Daughtry’s shocked look or bad feelings of any kind. It was nice to watch.

I fast forwarded through Chris’ because I couldn’t stand to hear him weakly warble a high-pitched “I’m a cowboy…”.

Wow, Chris and Blake are best friends. I know it’s an intense process but best friends??

I admit I haven’t watched much this season, but I don’t understand all the Phil hate. From what I’ve seen, he’s been the best male singer for a few rounds now. Sure, he looks a bit freaky, but he’s got a far richer voice than either Chris or Blake by a long shot.

Conversely, I don’t understand the Blake love. Considering last night’s admission that a computer basically spits out the arrangements for him, what is he besides a barely-adequate voice in a somewhat appealing package?

I’m not all that nuts about his voice, but I love that this will be a springboard for him to do his own thing somewhere. I like his “no guts, no glory” attitude. He’s not exactly my cup o’ tea, but I salute him for his fearless exploration of his craft.

“Who are you texting all day, Chris?”

“IDK, my BFF Blake.”

I didn’t catch it, but I noticed the mic was left on.

If it was anything good, I’m sure Don & Mike (my “drive home” radio show) will be running through it, or someone who Tivo’ed it will get it.

So clue me in on the “Puppet” comment snarkiness between Simon and Ryan.

Paula is annoyed by Simon and says “I’m not your puppet.”
Ryan makes some comment about “Well I’ve seen Simon’ puppet and Paula is much more attractive than his.”
Simon gets mad thinking Ryan was referring to his girlfriend as his puppet and demands an apology.
Ryan is all “What? I wasn’t referring to your girlfriend.”

So what was Ryan referring to then?

I don’t know, that was awkward and weird. Maybe Simon draws a little face on his penis and does puppet shows for Ryan?

There was another excahnge later where Simon laughed his head off and Ryan said something about “trust me, I know”, that also seemed weird. Perhaps they are just BFF’s?

Lakisha said she would kiss Simon again and Ryan said but he has a girlfriend and it’s Very Serious. I thought that was a reference to how miffed Simon got about the imagined slight to his girlfriend.

I agree about the computer program generating Blake’s arrangements. That was disappointing to hear.

There was a point where Ryan said something about Simon having a girlfriend and then he said “…it’s VERY serious,” and all three of the judges started laughing their asses off in a way which seemed way out of proportion to whatever humor lay on the surface of that line. I think it had to have been some kind of inside joke that was funny to them only.
