American Idol 5/10

Ok, it looks the theme is country and then urban? Is that correct?

Is it me or does Carrie sound like a chipmunk?

Good lord, this song is awful.

I guess she’s competent at it but this kind of music is nails on a chalboard to me.

Last year the girl with the red hair (what’s her name) this the same song, and I thought that she ROCKED Carrie. Comparing both performances, I’d say Carrie wasn’t nearly as good.

I’m sorry, but Lou Rawls owns that song (it’s considered his “signature song”), and much as I do like Bo’s voice, I’d really rather not hear him country-rockify it – that would be just all kinds of wrong. On the other hand, he’d have his fans creaming their pants with “Don’t Leave Me This Way.”

Oh yeah, baby!

Oops – I see on preview that the show’s started on the East coast, so I’ll come back after I’ve seen it on the Left side.

I miss her… what are the topics today?

Carrie: Great song. Good singing. Terrible performance. You do know this song is about sex, don’t you? Well, actually, it’s about capital

S-E-X

in great big red letters. (And bad men, and hard liquor, and other good stuff.) It helps to know what you’re singing about, and I think your inexperience in that particular area (or at least the inexperience you’re trying to project with the particular image you’re going for) shows. I give you points for picking my all-time favorite Dixie Chicks song, but that song kinda sorta needs to be sung with some balls (for lack of a better word), and I don’t think you have them.

Nothing against Carrie. The country genre is just not my cup of tea.

Some of the stuff I like would probably make a lot of people jump out windows, though.

“Nashville” and the “Philly sound.”

Bo! Bo looks pretty!

Hey Bo is doing “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive”. He’s got the Travis Tritt look down ;).

Did Bo forget the lyrics at the beginning? That was pretty awkward. Liked Carrie’s performance a lot, can’t wait to raise our children together.

Simon was totally right on that. The original version by Travis Tritt has MUCH, MUCH more feeling behind it than Bo’s did. It almost sounded like he didn’t care.

I pretty much hate country music (Dixie Chicks, Patsy Cline, and Jimmy Buffett excepted) so I would like to comment on this while Bo sings some crap-ass song that I don’t know and don’t like one weensy bit. (Is this Lee Greenwood, BTW? It sounds like his kind of “Proud to Be an American” dreck.) At one point today, my iPod played the following songs, in order: “Ana Ng” by TMBG; “Train in Vain” by The Clash; “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway” from Spamalot (sung by david Hyde Pierce); “Long Time Gone” by Dixie Chicks; some weird piano concerto that I didn’t even know I had on there; and “Back in Black.” Is there something wrong with me?

I was just about the post the same thing. Amy Adams rocked that song last year. Carrie just doesn’t have the spunk or personality for bluegrass inspired tunes. She should have done traditional country.

I think Simon was right about that being a boring song choice and a lazy performance by Bo. He’s still very good even when he’s barely trying but it seems like he’s had a string of really boring, bland choices lately. I wonder if someone’s been advising him tone himself down and play it really safe.

I don’t know, I thought he did well last week. This wasn’t his best performance, I agree.

Vonzell… I like that song…

Vonzell is best of the night so far.

Oh, Vonzell! This song is so obvious and I want to smack you for it. You want to sing a country diva ballad, so you pick a Diane freakin’ Warren song? I would have liked it much better if you had sung “Crazy,” or perhaps something by Dolly Parton. Or Linda Ronstadt, even. And you’re so damn flat. Gaah. You’re better than this song and this performance.

My tastes are just as eclectic. I’ll go to work with Slayer, Bob Marley, Beethoven, Ravi Shankar and John Coltrane and not think anything of it.
