American Idol 5/4 to 5/5

Just five remain. Jacob or Lauren will leave this week, I imagine. He is annoying and she is just dull.

I loved everyone except Jacob. He can go home.

Haley was the best of the night. The judges were idiots for trashing her first song.

James sucked on the second song, but they gave him a pass. Don’t want to lose James…

Scotty was alright, but i heard at least two male country singers on ‘The Voice’ the other night who gave better performances than either of his.

Lauren is still forgettable.

Jacob is… Fast forwardable. I can only get about ten seconds into one of his songs before I start stabbing the ff button on my remote like I’m Hannibal Lector at a liver buffet.

James didn’t have his best night. I still find Jacob and Scotty annoying. Haley’s last song was pretty decent. And, oh yeah, almost forgot Lauren.

James was bo-ring. Yeah, you can sing songs like that in that style - you’ve done it almost every performance so far. Do something different - impress me. I keep comparing him to the year my boyfriend, David Cook, was on, and he is coming up way short.

ETA: You’re right about the country singers from “The Voice,” Sam.

Jacob - you sucked like a Dyson vacuum cleaner. I vote for Randy! Yay! Tell him what’s what! Three minutes of shrieking and wiggling is not a good performance.

And what the hell is up with J-Lo’s hair? There is speculation that J-Lo did her hair and then took a nap.

Agreed. The Gaga song was great, but her final number was incredible.

I’ve never seen anyone cry and sing at the same time. It just so happens I love that song. So he kinda lucked out with me. Admitting tonight was not his best work.

I liked the uptempo number he did, but neither song showcased his voice all that well. ‘‘Gone’’ pushed him into ranges that I feel he’s better off not pursuing. I think he is an amazing singer though. I can’t even think of a male country singer off the top of my head who has a better voice than he does.

She won’t push herself, and that annoys me.

James - second song, not as boring as the first.

Jacob - that was not good enough. You listen to Sheryl Crow sing the song pretty and nice, and you decide to do exactly the opposite of pretty and nice. Oversung, pitchy, screechy dreck.

Lauren - totally wussed out. I wanted to hear that note that only two singers alive can hit!

Haley was so close to fantastic - just that extraneous growling that she insists on doing kept that from being unfrikkenbelievable.

I agree - A little growling goes a long way, and she overdoes it - just like Casey did. But other than that - holy cow.

I pretty much hate country music and avoid it (with exceptions, of course, there’s always exceptions). I am very predisposed to hate country singers just because they sing country.

But from the very start of this season and throughout it has been Scotty, Scotty, Scotty. He’s the only one I never fast forward, and he’s the only one this season who consistently gives me chills.

I think he is fully formed, exciting, charming, sweet, interesting and nothing less than flawless, particularly given his age. He will either win or come in second and he will be as big or bigger than Carrie Underwood, no question. He’s going to have a monster career that’s going to last for decades, assuming he manages to avoid substance abuse and similar career-killers.

Jacob will be the next to go. I like Jacob but am surprised he’s lasted this long.

I hate to say it, but I’m finally getting attached to these people, after all this time, and will be sad to see any of them go. Except Lauren. I forget about Lauren all the time.

I also really liked Hailey’s first song - I thought it was great to hear new stuff. (Of course, given my limited knowledge of pop and country, a lot of what’s on Idol is new to me.) James had a really off night. The kids really liked Lauren, who got the 4yo’s vote because of her “pretty dress.” Scotty seemed more tolerable than usual. And Jacob was positively horrifying. If we could somehow transfer just a little of his self-confidence to Lauren, that would be awesome.

Bingo. How can you sing Unchained Melody and not really go for it? You can’t sing that song and then hold back as much as she did. She’s not necessarily bad, but she really needs to showcase a little more.

Can we get this straight: Jacob is no Luther. I love me some Luther. There is something about Jacob’s voice, especially the upper register, that is not pleasing. He can go now.

Oh, and I’d have paid money for Sheryl Crow’s version of “Hurt.”

Loved James’ vulnerability, but agree that neither of the songs were his best.

Scotty did a great job on the first song, but “Always on My Mind” was too somnulent. And that’s one of my favorite songs. I thought it was interesting when he said that Elvis sang it. Elvis did sing it, of course, but I’d imagine that most people are more familiar with the Willie Nelson version.

Loved both of Lauren’s songs. She reminds me a lot of Kelly Clarkson, right down to the baby fat and youthful guile. However, she missed the crescendo in “Unchained Melody” and that’s like reading a book without a climax.

I actually enjoyed the Lady Gaga song, though I’m not sure I would want to hear Haley’s stylized way of singing though an entire concert. She blew “House of the Rising Sun” right out of the place, though.

I was surprised that James wasn’t very good last night. Maybe he is sneakily handing the win over to Scotty so he won’t be stuck with the Idol contract?

Jacob’s voice is painful to hear. He actually did hit one glory note that impressed me, but ruined the rest of the song with his mush-mouth and histrionics. Please go home already!

I was prepared to be annoyed with Haley’s House of the Rising Sun, but wow. She kicked ass! Okay, she did annoy me with the stupid grinning.

I agree about Jacob’s voice - there is something about it that sets my teeth on edge. And that’s without watching him - when he was dancing in his first song last night, that pelvic thrusting was just ewww. I honestly don’t know why, but I can’t stand anything about him.

I missed parts of the show but, as usual, I liked what I was able to see of Scotty’s and James’s performances (I missed J’s first song, though).

I finally figured out why I can’t stand to watch him… He opens his mouth so wide, you can see his whole tongue, even when he’s not doing glory notes and just singing… or talking.
