An abbreviated MMP

Moooom, I love TTT/EEE. I do that frequently with my work email… if I’m really POed, I wipe out all the email addresses, type something really snarky and impolite, then replace it with something more appropriate and put all the names back in.

'grats on the test, Moonie! See, all that stressing out paid off. I am intrigued by this “pineapple dressing” you speak of… what’s that?

OK, back to my giant stack of paper. I think I killed a small forest printing out the 1100 pages of documentation, and based on what I’ve read so far, that poor forest seems to have died in vain. Hmph.

This post was brought to you by the letters W, T and F.

Evenin’ all. Nice OP Moooommmm! Short and to the point.

My contributions (related to my work as a lawyerin’ type):

CYA:

Cover Your Ass

and his big brother, KYACAAT:

Keep Your Ass Covered At All Times

My final offering is the name of a boys’ club from my university, a private university that was quite expensive, so full to the brim with rich kids (except me - I was on a scholarship) - they called themselves the LOMBARDs:

Lots Of Money But A Real Dickhead

Need to start thinking about packing a bag for our dirty weekend (hubby and I are going to Cairo on Thursday for 4 days, if you missed it in the last MMP) - two shirts, a couple T-shirts, a pair of jeans, a pair of black pants, a nice dress, a swimsuit and some shoes should about do it (plus underwear and toiletries, etc).

kai, yowch! You look after yourself, ya hear!

Underwear not necessary for dirty weekend.

Naughty underwear is!

The actual method we did was:

  • 1 manned line on the north side, to protect the neighboring house from the heat;

  • 1 2 1/2" inch master stream, pouring in to the retail part of the building;

  • 1 1 1/2" hand line on the warehouse wing (the one you see me entering).

That was the initial attack. Our ladder truck set up, and it’s the equivalent of a 2 1/2" master stream. At that point, the inch and a half and the master streams were abandoned, because you don’t do any kind of ground attack when there is an aerial op going on. The line protecting the house kept going, but it wasn’t actively trying to extinguish fire, rather cool the exposures.

The ladder truck ran for about an hour, most of that time was spent butt picking. I helped with stuff like setting up drop tanks for tankers to haul to.

I didn’t get busy until the ladder truck shut down, and there wasn’t a lot of flame to be had. Mop up, overhaul, and salvage.

Could be worse. Nearly twenty years ago, something slid sideways in my back when I was getting dressed and the fates decided to play Statue Maker with me. I came very close to having to walk sideways with my shirt half-on down to a nearby chiropractor’s office and saying “help!”

Fair warning - It’s been a few days since I’ve been able to take any pain meds, so I’m hurting and bitchy. I had no idea how much the ibuprofen had been holding back, but because it interferes with clotting, I had to stop it one week before surgery. Yesterday was absolutely miserable. Today at least, I can just veg in my office chair so nothing other than my fingers need to move.

One minor note on the surgeon - I was impressed to see his waiting room was furnished with Aeron side chairs - just like my Aeronat the office, but without wheels. Very comfortable and supportive - spot-on for a spine specialist.

We don’t really have any “cute” acronyms here. Just things that we deal with like GLBA, GRC, SOXand PCI-DSS.

Moonie, I also forgot to mention that bottles were exploding constantly. Nobody was going in when there was the threat of glass hand grenades going off.

Even after we breached the door and got inside, there were three different explosions that got our attention. Nearly had to change my skivvies when I got home.

Pinapple Dressing consists of crushed pinapple suspended in a bread, egg, sugar and butter matrix. That’s literally the whole ingredients list. You take the ingredients, mix 'em together in a 9x13 pan, and bake it. When it comes out of the oven there’s pools of boiling butter on top so you have to cool it until the butter soaks back in…

It’s essentially a dessert that you get to call a side dish. Will attempt to procure recipe from paternal unit at earliest possible convenience.

Vbob - that sounds like it would actually be kind of fun… Once.

Today is not Monday, it’s Mathsday. Calc III exam tomorrow. Must… learn… gradient and directional derivatives…

Another great college acronym: DUMBASS

Didn’t Understand Material , Book,or Assignment, So Skipped.

Calling all engineers: What on earth do you actually USE multivariable calculus for? It seems pretty easy as long as you can remember how do combine the various partial derivatives but for the life of me I don’t know what I’ll ever do with it.

Oh, you crazy 'Muricans and your dessert-disguised-as-side-dish obsession. Sounds like all you need to round out the meal is a glazed ham baked in Coke and decorated with maraschino cherries, a large dish of marshmallow topped sweet potatoes and various chopped veggies trapped in a Jell-O mold.

Gag gag gag.

(it sounds like it would be positively lovely as a dessert, though, so please do share when paternal unit gives up the goods)

I don’t use it by itself, but it’s a necessary evil for Differential Equations, which I do use on occasion. I dabble in Control Theory every so often.

“Cover your ass” is one side of the coin. On the other side, it says,“Cash your paycheck.” In other words, if you can CYA, you can CYP. Many–if not most–of the people I work with, see the first only as a means to the second. And I’m talking about public education.

The result is that they aren’t trying to make education better; they’re just trying to make sure they don’t lose their paychecks.

LA Unified administration, I’m talking to you.

Two more I learned at work, but I expect they’re fairly well known:

PEBCAK Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard

PICNIC Problem In Chair, Not In Computer

**Bobbio **- yanno, that’s a heck of a hobby you’ve chosen. Good on ya!

**doggio **- Yay for Nelly’s return! How’s she doing with Gordie?

**RNATB **- enjoy TTT/EEE - it is so handy.

**Dotty **- have a blast! I am envious!

**Moonie **- I never use any calc. But I’m a pretty low-rent engineer.

Monday is over. Firday can’t come soon enough…

Bleh. Some model scores didn’t run right last night so we’ve basically been waiting all day for a rerun. Not much can get done on a Monday without so there’s been very little to do other than Dope. Tomorrow’s going to be hellish.

Sorry the cannelloni didn’t show up, moonie. It went in to the cd drive ok… I think maybe my computer kept it for itself. And on the calc… well I’m an Imaginary Engineer (industrial engineer, but at my school the “real” engineers called us IEs “imaginary”), so I didn’t even have to take multivariate. Diff Eq was the end of the line for me. And I never used that after the final.

Gnocchi chili for dinner tonight. (Actually Gnocchi Nicoise, but it tastes like chili so that’s what we call it.) I definitely recommend that recipe.

Howdy Y’all from wet and icky south Jawja! It’s miserable out. I’m lettin’ water out of the pool yet again.

I like my new schedule! 6:30-3 is great. I get there early enough to get a primo parkin’ space and leave early enough to get away before the evenin’ shift vultures get there lookin’ for primo spaces.

Dindin tonight was leftover sketties and a sallit. 'Twas good yet again.

I have no acronyms to offer. ATT if fraught with 'em but I don’t retain 'em outside of work. Although we do say

PEBCAD

Problem Exists Between Chair and Device

There are days when ya just want to say to somebody… “I’m sorry but you are too dumbass to own a mobile telephone. We are disconnecting all services and ordering you return your phone to the store immediately.”

I too work in a place filled with acronyms. One that many have heard of: HIPAA. We also have lots of 3-digit codes that are EDI transaction numbers brought to us by the nice people who develop ANSI ASC X12 transactions. At work, it is easy for me to come up with acronym-filled sentences that require extensive translation for those not privy to my own personal glossary.

A couple of my work friends use the term BOHICA in what appears to be a non-standard manner.

Bend over, hear it comes again. Here are Urban Dictionary’s definitions. We use it in the sense that someone is sending a big ol’ project or task at us. I think the “again” has to do with they’ve sent other big tasks in our direction before. Ours appears to be a non-standard use of the term.

I really like PEBCAD and PEBCAK. I work (not closely) with a number of people where this is the issue.

Wow, that sounds like it was some fire, Bobbio. Nice picture, too.

Hi SO and Soapy and LiLi!

Welcome, guizot!

Yummy-sounding recipes, taxi. I’ll add them momentarily. Pineapple dressing sounds good, too, Moonie.

Came home early because I still wasn’t feeling great. I’m traveling Thursday and Friday, so I need to be better NOW!!!

I’ve ingested my Lean Cuisine (I didn’t have anything in the freezer that was easy to zap, so I bought several LCs to make sure I was eating something semi-substantial at dinner this week) and a banana and a glass of orange juice.

Now I think I’ll knit and watch something on the internet.

Back later.

GT

I’ve had users like that. Just want to say “Who the hell are you and how did you find your way into this building?”

gt - I learned BOHICA years ago, and it’s come in quite handy over the years.

Just finished knitting another dish cloth. They’re fun, and colorful. Hope I can sell them at future craft shows - otherwise, everyone is getting a dishcloth for Christmas.

It’s raining, and it’s supposed to continue thru Weds. Where the heck is spring, dammit?!?!?

Crazy day. QD showed up to bake a huge batch of Easter Bread, and Attacks Husband played hookie from work and came to help. We ate Middle Eastern french fry sammiches for dinner- fries in pita with tahini and garlic sauce. With grilled zuchinni. The garlic/fry sandwich is a culinary masterpiece. If you feel like gaining weight, I recommend them. I can cough up the recipe if there’s interest.
Was off last week for Holy Week, nice to be back, and kisses all round.

But of course there’s interest, LiLi. If nothing else, the concept must be documented. Fascinating.

I’ve watched my German soap. Sadly today’s Easter Monday extra-long episode can best be summed up as follows: “What? You didn’t know we had a new soap opera? Here, let us badly cut highlights together so that you can catch up on the story. Oh, and just for fun, here are two minutes of new stuff.” Honest. Two entire minutes of new stuff. This approach made sense for the German market, but I didn’t have a day off today and wanted to see an entire new episode, what with being under the weather and all.

And, for some reason, I keep hitting some odd combination of keys instead of Alt+tab, so instead of switching from Firefox to iTunes, I accidentally submit my post. More to follow in a moment.

Yay, Monday is over for this week at least! Oh boy, and welcome back, LiLi; Dotty, I am totally jealous of your romantic getaway. But have a great time!! And a woo hoo for the return of Nellie, Doggio; glad to know that she put Gordie in his place already. LOL

As for acronyms and internet shorthand … well, let’s just say that it took me months to remember what LOL meant, and that was back in '94, when I was 42. That said, my favorite is probably SNAFU.

One day, three to go until FIRDAY!
