An Arty MMP

Morning. Great pictures, Rebo! I like the Batmobile! And the Micky D’s car. And the brass car. Looks like fun.

We went to the Shepherd’s Harvest Festival on Saturday. Lots of sheep and llamas and alpaca and angora rabbits. Did anyone know that you can spin directly from a rabbit? It was amazing. The woman was sitting there with a rabbit on her lap, just pulling off fur and spinning it as she went. I had no idea you could do that.

And there were lamb burgers and lamb brats. And a nun shearing a llama. And dogs attempting to herd. I’ve seen herding dog trials before, which are really cool. These were the beginners and maybe a couple intermediates, but they weren’t quite up to par yet. Lots of running in circles and barking.

KT decided late Friday to head to Wisc for the weekend to visit his parents. So I got a weekend to myself, which was great. He found out that they’d been planning to go to a really great Serbian restaurant on Friday but didn’t 'cause his dad’s been getting over a bad cold. So after I went to bed on Friday night, he made two bureksfor them since they missed out. He’s such a sweetie. (Except, of course, that I didn’t get to eat any of the yummy burek. Although I suppose it was my choice not to go with him. I’ll just have to convince him to make more!

I invented something yummy on Saturday in an attempt to clean out the fridge. I had fake krab that I needed to use up and some spinach, green onions, and cilantro. So I made Cajun krab alfredo. We have Penzey’s Cajun seasoning so I put that on the fake krab and broiled it. Made a white sauce with lots of garlic and some parmesan. Tossed the chopped spinach in the boiling water with the pasta for a minute. Threw in the green onions and cilantro and a splash of cream just 'cause. Added that to the spinach, pasta, and the crab. And voila! It was quite tasty. KT approved when he came home last night.

I did call my mom for Mother’s Day too. Except that I call them every Sunday so it really wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. I did make shortbread cookies last week and mailed them to her. She should get them today I think. That’s something that she really likes that Dad doesn’t like to much. It’s one of the few things that I can send that she’ll get to eat without Dad snatching them all.

Now back to work. Yippee.

This weekend was the exact opposite of relaxing. Back down to just three roommates–long story that I don’t want to go into again. I’m about to head out to pay some car insurance and call the college I applied to week before last.

Latkes don’t taste as good when they’re reheated. This is good to know.

Hello.

Good-bye (for now).

My dreams last night were a mix of X-Men, the President, the Go Order of the Stick strip, and my career plans. It was even weirder than that sounds. Also, my sleep cycle is getting really screwed up. I got to sleep at 3 and I was tired when I woke up at noon. My roommate’s still asleep and it’s nearly 1.

Curse you. I want straight A’s. I had them for three years straight, but during the last two semesters I seem to have contracted a serious case of The Dumb.

Lucky 13 - I have no idea tbh, I’ve never been to a convention of any sort before. I assume there will be official badges, with fan-made and arty ones serving just to show off your (or your friends’) skills and to introduce your character to other con-goers.

Kricket - At least they waited until after sunup. I was awakened before dawn by the horrid clanging and banging of the garbage truck emptying the dumpster outside the appartments. This process involves the garbage truck hoisting the dumpster via hydraulic forks and banging it against the truck’s trash receptacle bin thingy (the big empty back part where trash goes) and produces a sound not unlike 55-gallon steel drumb being beaten with sledgehammers. At 4AM.

Also, you like the Used. Therefore, you are awesome.

Taxi - Krab Alfredo… Yum. I doubt that’ll travel well through the CD drive, though; can you try saving some as a .zip(lock) file and forewarding it to me as an email attachment?

Also, a Serbian restaurant in Wisconsin? Really? That’s kind of surreal. I thought all they had is Wisconsin was… space. And rednecks.

Mahna - If you think the Star Trek lens flare was bad, try watching anime. The Japanese have invented a way to produce lens flare in unlit rooms, in first-person shots, as a reflection of light off of stuff like wood (wtf? Reflective wood?), and more. It can be maddening. Of course, like the Star Trek movie, this is frequently offset by explosions and spaceships and lasers and Diabolical Devices and whatnot, so all in all, yeah, hella fun.

Can I have some ribs?

LiLi - Bacon Ice Cream? Seriously? I don’t even feel qualified to pass an uninformed snap judgement on such a thing.

Kalhoun - That sounds like a positively divine meal, especially the fruit-and-sauce. What is filet-mignon benedict, though? Does it involve English muffins and hollandaise sauce?

Now I want Crem Brulee. Not that I ever stpped wanting it after trying the authentic homemade variety in a Parisian cafe… Now, I just want it more than usual.

I only had one class today, from 10 to 11AM (yay last-days-before-finals!), and I got my paper back. I got a 98/100! From a teacher who said outright that she reserves A’s for near-perfection, and who has her PhD in Literature! And she wants a copy of my paper to use as an example when she teaches writing workshops and seminars! That’s pretty badass considering I wrote the whole thing the day before it was due and I’m not any sort of English or other Liberal Arts major. So yeah, much-needed pre-finals ego boost there. More good news: All four of my finals are on different days! I don’t have any days with multiple exams! I think this is a first.

I’m sleepy. See above comment about dumpster-banging at 4am. Time to go read some online comedy articles and take a nap, then study maths.

Hugs, waves, High-Velocity Cranial Trout Applications, yays, boos, and whatever else may be appropriate (or even not so appropriate) to all!

Moonie, I agree, no one does Epic Lens Flare Overload quite like anime. My problem with using it in Star Trek is that it felt like the DOP had a serious case of CSI: Miami Syndrome. I’m thinking it’ll make for a great drinking game, though… take a shot everytime there’s a lens flare and you’ll be hammered by the time the title appears onscreen.

Also, the bacon ice cream has great potential, but last night’s batch didn’t quite live up to expectations… the problem is that bacon, even when cooked until very crispy, becomes unpleasantly chewy once it sits overnight in a frozen custard base.

Ice cream is one of those foods that should never require mastication. I’m thinking next time I’ll do shards of caramelized bacon as a garnish instead (or, as **LiLi **suggested, bacon brittle… because how can a merger between bacon and brittle possibly be a bad thing?)

So, every time the camera focuses on Kirk, he slowly turns his head and puts on his sunglasses (if he’s already wearing sunglasses he puts on a second pair), then delivers an unfunny one-liner in a deadpan monotone that could cure insomnia?

Also, everything is orange?

Hello everyone.

Awesome pics, rebo. They have a similar parade in Seattle. I’ve never gone, but I’ve seen some of the cars on the news.

Yesterday the two men in my life brought me roses for Mother’s Day. After that, we went to sis’s place where we ate and chatted with my mother, mil, my sister, her husband and sis’s in-laws.

We left there around four and came home. We then played some WoW, and watched Slumdog Milliionaire.

I stayed home from work today. I got up with the intention of going to work, but while walking to my bathroom managed to jack up my back…again. Damn, it hurt. So, I called in, crawled into bed, and stayed there until just a little bit ago. My back is still killing me and the Motrin isn’t touching it. I tried stretching it a little, but that was pure misery.

Hmmm, nothing else going on around here. Guess I’ll try some ice for my back now.

Just deadpan one-liners. Sunglasses would have been a nice touch, though.

More like blinding white and shiny surfaces everywhere you turn (except for the villain’s ship, which was set up to personify the angst and despair experienced by the bad guys, lit only by the faint hope of 20-watt bulbs).

Orange would have been somewhat better.

Howdy Y’all! One down and four to go!

Rebo awesome pics. I’m particularly fond of the chicken car. Then again, I like chicken stuff. Don’t judge.

Taters sorry about the back. Hope it feels better soon.

Shelli Howdy! Congrats on the A’s. You are forgiven. Now, come back and post more young lady!

I want, nay, need bacon ice cream!

Kricket babble on as much or as little as ya like. We’re good either way. We still need a nickname for ya though. We could call ya Krick or ChirpChirp like the sound a cricket makes. Nicknames have no rhyme nor reason here. It’s whatever sticks.

Now for the news from back home.

My mother has her a suitor! Go mom! I had suspected but got it confirmed this weekend. They are so keeeeeeeeyooooooooote together! Mom is five feet tall and he’s all of 5’3". They met at the senior center. Who knew it was a pickup place! Anywho, I am extremely happy for her. It’s been five years since dad died. If’n he makes her happy that’s what matters. Really nice guy.

Dindin tonight shall be grilled chicken sallit.

It’s hawt here like it is down Puggy’s way and some grilled chicken boob on cool crisp sallit sounds like it’d be good.

Not just krab alfredo, Cajun krab alfredo! And I like the idea of a ziplock file!

I’m a Yankee by upbringing so I was of the same opinion as you of the Midwest until I fell in love with a Midwestern boy. Milwaukee’s pretty cool, and Madison’s just an awesome college town. Both Wisconsin and Minnesota are blue-leaning purple states, although the blue is heavily concentrated in the major cities.

The Serbian restaurant is awsome, and there’s some good Mexican in Milwaukee. Here in the Twin Cities, we’ve found good Thai, great authentic Chinese (i.e. not American Chinese, but what they eat in China), amazing Tibetan food, Afghan food, Mexican, and terrific (if hard to get!) Kurdish food. There’s also a Peruvian restaurant that actually serves guinea pig, but we haven’t been there yet. (And we’re not sure if the guinea pigs are pet store rejects or what. :stuck_out_tongue: ) There are also large concentrations of Somali and Hmong immigrants here as well.

There’s way more to the Midwest than our flyover status would indicate. It’s been a great discovery for me over the last 3 years!

ETA: I forgot to mention the cheese curds and frozen custard. They’re the best part of Wisconsin!

It’s a tender slice of filet mignon with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce over it, and served on some sort of a little muffin/bagle bread product. There was also a tomato concasse (sp?) atop it.

It was all kinds of awesome.

Oh…and it was “girl food” rather than the 14-22 oz. “man food” that dominates the rest of the menu. Woohoo!! I’m talking pork chops as big as your head and steaks that should be served to a family of four.

Heck, my mother and her best friend refuse to go to any kind of senior thing other than Imserso trips and all-female shindings because of “all those old guys who can’t keep their hands to themselves.”

Imserso trips are cheap trips sponsored by Spanish Social Security; well, strictly speaking it’s another agency and this agency changes names every few governments, but in the end it’s SS. The two of them go together and either stick to themselves or get attached to mixed-gender groups; any single guy or group of guys who tries to get close is in danger of losing fingers…

Minnie?

Kricket → Jiminy → Minnie…

**swampy, **you nailed it - one down, 4 to go…

Cool cars, Rebo! I like stuff like that.

I had a terrible time falling asleep last night - probably because I didn’t do a thing all day yesterday and I wasn’t tired enough. But I did enjoy my day of sloth.

Gonna make a pseudo-stirfry with chicken and yellow rice and veggies. Strawberries for dessert. Better go getting it cooking. Back later.

Nava that hot bed of steamy sultry romance known as the senior center is the over 70s single’s bar in my hometown. Several would be suitors have tried to woo mom but, to quote her, this is the first one that can actually carry on a conversation and is not dumber than a box of rocks. Plus, he still drives at night. That’s apparently a big plus.

BBBobbio I get the connection. Now let’s see if Kricket minds bein’ called Minnie.

The weather is lovely today - so I guess I’ll blame the blurfiness on Spring Fever

Seriously, I have asked my doctor what can be done about my lack of energy - I’m already on a mega-B complex - I’d like to avoid actual prescriptions because I take too many of those as it is - Does anyone have any recommendations?

bows Thanks, I was sort of hoping .ziplock would become a new MMP meme

As far as food out there… Holy crap that’s awesome. So much variety! I wouldn’t know where to get pretty much any of that around here. So much so that I don’t even know what most of that food IS! So, what is “Kurdish” food? Or Serbian, or authentic Chinese, or Thai, or Peruvian? What sort of stuff do people from those cultures eat? If I were go to one of those restaurants, what would be on the menu, and what would the ingredients be? Inquiring (and hungry!) minds want to know!

Also, Kalhoun, you just made my Buffalo Chicken sub seem woefully inadequate.

My pseudo stirfry was good. Diced vidalia onion, sliced portobellos, sliced chickie tit, saffron rice, mixed veggies, and a bit of tarragon (can’t do N.O.T. since that’s been taken…) all cooked up together. Quite good.

Strawberries with cool whip for dessert. Quite yum.

Jeans in dryer, misc colored clothes in washer. That’s all the work I’ll be doing tonight. Knitting shall resume soon.

Ugh. Back to reality. Crazy day at work and I am exhausted.

Will post about my luxurious weekend tomorrow.

Didn’t have time to look at the links… but I couldn’t resist “the big chicken”! cool!
