Look for TomTom, which is a coordinates and waypoint mod. Also, look for LightHeaded, which imports Thottbot info and forum replies into your quest log.
As for making notes on the map, Cartographer lets you do that, but I’m not sure if it’s been updated in the last few patches…it may have problems. There are other mapnotes mods, though.
I’ve been using them for several months now. I haven’t had any problems with either of them. Cartographer, I’d not really recommend…it throws errors constantly, and there are other mods that just have the map notes function (though I can’t think of any offhand and can’t look for them here at work). I only use it because without it my minimap has an unsettling habit of “jumping” slightly, probably because of some other mostly-forgotten mod in my interface folder…
I used to be a mod-head, but since restarting with TBDL I’ve only installed two, and one of them is Titan Panel. It includes coordinates display, among other things you might find handy (like gold display, empty bag slots, ammo remaining, etc). Very configurable as to what you want to display.
It’s very simple. Coordinates under your picture, and at your cursor when in map mode.
I also use a quest mod which I made myself that adds the actual quest level and nothing else. Example log:
[6] Quest Name A
[8] Quest Name B
[10] Quest Name C
I know this is contained in larger software, but if anyone is interested in my low overhead version, let me know and I’ll get it online.
Has anyone used the Wowecon UI Mod? Because Cairne is a new server, there aren’t always comparable prices available at the AH. It seems like having ingame global and local price histories would be a big help in determining asking prices and reasonableness.
Auctioneer. You can scan your own server’s auction house from time to time to get a database of prices. It’s still a good idea to take a browse through for the object you want to sell, because even Auctioneer can be fooled by gold sellers selling rough stone for 100G.
Seconded. And it also comes with a handy tooltip program that tells you the price at which each item will sell at a vendor. Very handy for choosing between quest rewards you cannot or do not want to use.
At the moment I’m using the version that was current about six months ago. I have a bad habit of forgetting to check for mod updates…as long as a patch doesn’t completely break it, I usually retain the mod version I have.
It’s a little overkill, but it’s a fantastic tool if you want to sell on the AH. If you create an auction mule, you can set the add-on to only activate it for that toon, I believe. In any event, it only activates some of the modules when needed (i.e. when you click an auctioneer or your mailbox).
I use Cartographer Complete, and like it very much (and this version, for me at least so far, hasn’t had a single problem). I also rely very heavily on SmartBuff/Debuff.
I may have to check out the AH tools – never bothered with one before.
I don’t think Cairne is currently being included in the Armory. We’ll probably have to wait until the upcoming patch.
I use several add-ons: Enhanced Flight Map: let’s you browse all your flight nodes, even when not at a flight master. Puts up a bar for in-flight time. Puts flight points on your map. Highly recommended to everyone. Access it with /efm command. Gatherer: records every place you pick an herb or mine or chest. It even reports the location to everyone else in the guild who has the add-on. Highly recommended for anyone with herbalism or mining. Auctioneer: with regular auction house scanning, it will tell you how much any item goes for. It’s complicated to use, though. Great for anyone who wants to sell/buy things on the AH or tries to play the market. Cosmos: it’s huge, but it’s divided into many modules which are easy to toggle off individually. Several modules greatly improve my gameplay. I would only recommend to those who don’t mind complexity. Trinity Bars: Cosmos doesn’t do anything to the bars. This add-on gives almost complete customizability. It’s tricky to use though. And still buggy. No crashes, but some things don’t work well.
I’m currently installing WoW, and I’ll post my avatar details in the main thread once I’ve created one… however, I’m wondering if I could ask for some basic advice on character design? I’m going for either a rogue or a mage (probably a rogue, since I dig the dps vibe). If I end up with a rogue I’ll probably go with Skinning and Leatherworking as my professions, and obviously hit the poison and lockpicking secondaries. However, I’m going into this completely blind, and it’d be nice if I didn’t accidentally gimp my character by neglecting some common-knowledge strategies in chargen and the early levels.
You can choose all your professions once you’re in the game, and they are not fixed. The only thing you need to choose that is fixed when you roll is your sex and race. For horde, my preference for a rogue would be undead, for the racial abilities Will of the Forsaken, which breaks any movement impairing effects and/or fear and also cannibalize, which allows you to regenerate your health by eating corpses. Other classes have decent racials as well, but undead would be my choice.
Also, lockipicking and poison are rogue skills, so you don’t need to choose them at the sacrifice of other professions.
BurnMeUp, did it work for you yesterday? When I logged in last night there was a queue of >275, so maybe they have locked it until the population settles down. That would be a shame.
BTW, I got in hot water big time with my wife last night for staying up so late in our BFD instance. So I might have to cut back on the instancing for a while – at least when I’m questing I can quit when it’s time for bed.
As you’re new, I’d reccomend rather than going skinning/leatherworking you go for skinning/herbalism or skinning/mining. This is not because you probably can’t handle leatherworking, but rather because you haven’t learned many of the moenymaking tricks some players know. Going two gathering professions can net you some spare change to use (not as much on a new server, but you can get some at least).
Rogues aren’t my absolute expertise, but you may want to google “rogue builds” as rogues aren’t the most complex class ever they only have a handfull of builds and most differences tend to be “take the sword based talent or the dagger based talent?” As for tricks of the trade, not much to offer other than do your quests and ask us for help if you get stuck. All I know is that I’ve heard rogues aren’t particularily good at killing mobs (abbreviation for “mobile object” meaning a monster/enemy) many levels higher than them so you may want to not push your limits too much, but still try and see how good you can do some have talent some need to work for it.
Will of the Forsaken isn’t any movement impairing effect, it’s jsut charm, fear, or sleep. Not any movement impairment (i.e. no dispelling entangling roots with it) Which pretty much limits it to a handful of effects (though it can be REALLY useful, such as in a certain room in Sunken Temple). But undead do make nice rogues.
