I’m not trying to postulate, I’m asking those who’ve read the novels from the expanded universe if there’s any legitimate canon to support it.
I thought that was the whole idea. Obi-Wan was furious and betrayed, hence the screaming “I loved you like a brother” stuff, so he (stupidly) left Anakin to suffer horribly as he slowly burned to death.
No, no there isn’t. Yoda only knew Sidious in his incarnation as Senator and then as Chancellor. That’s all.
When he says “I’ve been waiting” he means, I am a Sith, and I’ve been wanting to wipe out the Jedi, and what better way than to take out the head of the Order.
He didn’t just ask. He presented the Council with an ultimatum; in effect “Authorize me to train Anakin as my padawan, or I’ll do it without your permission.” Whatever personal reservations he may have had previously, he made a serious commitment then. That might have reinforced his Jedi revulsion from striking down a disarmed opponent. I think he just couldn’t force himself to do it.
Aren’t the books novelizations of the scripts? And if so, doesn’t that just make the writer a slightly-more legitimate practictioner of what we’re doing right now in this thread: trying to rationalize that mess?
