Another interesting thing someone brought up–Dedra kind of got off “easy” in a way. It will be interesting if they revisit the character because in 4 or 5 in-universe years, the empire has fallen and I’m willing to bet the New Republic is going to take a look at imperial prisoners marked as “rebel spies” which she maybe categorized as.
I bet there will be a Dedra/Vel/Kleya focused novel at some point.
Dedra is probably smart enough to position herself as a double agent who was only pretending to work for the Empire to better serve the rebellion. After all she has the indubitable cred of being in prison as a rebel spy. Sure, someone like Kleya will adamantly deny it, but it’s not as if she has universal credibility and no one could possibly know everyone who was secretly working for the rebellion.
She could claim to be secretly working with Lonni as a rebel spy and known only to Luthen. Sure, Kleya would say no, but Dedra could just say that her role was so sensitive that Luthen didn’t even tell Kleya. There would be no way to prove otherwise and her proof would be the basic fact that she was in prison.
BTW what do people feel about the Luthen killing Lonni. Personally I think it was really cold and also rather foolish. First of all Lonni was possibly the greatest hero of the rebellion and if you have even the slightest sliver of decency you would at least make an effort to keep him alive. Secondly he obviously had a tremendous amount of knowledge about the inner working of the empire and would be useful just for that.
Thats the tragedy… Lonni IS the hero and I don’t know if anyone will really ever know that. But what Luthen is doing isn’t about heroism. Luthen is operating under the ends justify the means. Everyone is expendable for the desired result.
Luthen was not in the business of rewarding people, only using them towards the ultimate goal. At that point he knew both of them were fucked, his life was already forfeit and he was fine with that. He also knew that Lonni did not feel that way at all. His options were kill him or let the ISB have him, escape was never on the table for either of them. He did him a kindness, and in the process protected his family by keeping suspicion away from Lonni and not letting him fall into imperial hands. A foolish attempt at extraction is not Luthen’s way and more importantly failure would be extremely dangerous to the rebellion. Yeah, Lonni was a hero, and died a hero as he should have.
Maybe a little, he did push Kleya into leaving when helping him would have probably been the surest way to make sure they wiped everything out. And then themselves.
Which is why Luthen not being prepared with a means of offing himself that could not fail was inexcusable. It forced Kleya to finish the job which risked her getting killed or caught and the message never delivered.
Of course necessary for the plot. And I’d have missed not seeing how bad ass she is and the whole rescue scene. But rationally there should have been no need for either.
Wouldn’t it be just her luck if she didn’t have that option any longer? After Cassian’s escape, the Empire probably turned down the voltage on the floors so that it would just knock the prisoners out instead of killing them. They probably also fixed it so that prisoners can’t short the floor out by causing a flood.
It occurs to me that Andor has a radical element, and I don’t mean the revolutionary type of radical - I mean radical with respect to the rest of Star Wars. Up until this series (and especially this season), Star Wars has, basically, explicitly told us that Luke, Han, and Leia (LHL) were the indispensable heroes the galaxy needed. That they were, obviously, the true heroes. But what Andor has shown us is that, compared to Luthen, Cassian, Mothma and company, LHL were basically bystanders for most of the Rebellion, and just lucked into playing a role in a few critical moments. But compared to Luthen and Cassian, etc., what did they sacrifice? Not that much. Imagine the stress and anxiety Lonni Jung felt every day of his few years as a double agent. Compared to this, LHL barely sacrificed a thing. They seemed to have pretty comfortable lives, for the most part (aside from the odd carbon freeze or dismemberment or home planet’s destruction).
