Also wanted to add that watching the Empire casually discuss how to Frack a planet full of people into oblivion was pretty horrifying.
“The banality of evil” is always chilling.
Definitely felt insprired by the Nazi’s Wannsee Conference.
Watched the first episode; hadn’t actually realized they were releasing 3 at a time. I was rather hazy about the details of the first season so half way through I watched recap video on Youtube which actually helped quite a bit. I agree that the idiot rebels were quite silly and I hope they sharpen their plotlines in future episodes. Also agree that the whole Ghorman sequence was chilling and probably the best part of the episode. It didn’t occur to me they were referencing the Wannsee Conference but that makes a lot of sense. In general I have liked the political-bureaucratic aspects of Andor and it appears they will continue to be strong and add depth to the world-building.
Are we really glossing over the best part of the whole mini-arc, the dinner with Dedra, Syril and Eedy? Syril had to risk his life and scour the galaxy to find a girlfriend who could stand up to his mother. Seriously, Dedra was terrifying in that whole scene, especially when she smiled. Not that the smile was forced or looked strained, it was how perfectly she smiled at Eedy that was frightening.
And I want to crash a Chandrilan wedding.
I love how Andor has been exploring the fact that, yes, it’s one galaxy, but these are planets with 1000s of years of their own culture. The wedding, the funeral from last season, the weird rock, paper, scissors game with the neo-rebels.
Any idea what the point was of the nominated "second"s were in the duel? I may have missed something - It looked like they were playing simultaneously, but not scoring?
I think the idiot rebels scenes would have came off better if they casted younger. Sort of a youth getting dragged unwillingly into the rebellion, we get reminded that they are still kids, tragedy hits when they end up murdering each other.
I think that was all part of the “most of the rebels are idiots and losers” theme. I don’t think the producers put a ton of effort into making the game make sense.
And man, the ending, with Mon getting drunk and dancing with abandon to forget that she just condemned her old friend to death was completely insane.
I’m actually disappointed they’re releasing 3 episodes a week, I’d rather stretch this out and savor it. But I want to discuss it too, so I guess I have to watch them as they drop.
I’m too fixated on the fate of the Andor family droid. If he was being too emo before, imagine if they abandoned him. (And there is no sign that they didn’t.)
I mentioned this in my post above but I am pretty sure the planet Andor was captured on was supposed to be Yavin IV which means he and the late Mr. Porko discovered the future location of Alliance HQ.
I didn’t notice that at the time, but it retrospect it makes sense that a show that is explicitly counting down to the B of Y (note the card at the beginning saying 4 BBY) would feature Y.
I wonder if Porko was related to Porkins?
I thought the same thing.
Quimby - was there a glimpse of the Yavin temple ruins prior to the end of episode 3? Good catch.
And have they explained what is so sinister about the Chandrilan wedding/marriage? I expected the groom was going to gut the bride from tip to tail with that knife, given how horrified everyone was at the prospect of the wedding taking place. Was it just the young age of them? They appeared to be around 16-18, and with production delays, maybe the actors had aged out of looking much younger?
Yeah when he took off during his escape you could see Yavin in the sky and the pyramids.
Who was horrified by it besides Mon?
But from the first season - Leida was 13, and is a fan of the old conservative Chandrilan ways, where you get married as a young teen and it’s arranged by your parents. Mon was unhappy that Leida wanted to do that and disapproves of the old traditions, but then took advantage of it anyway.
Davo Sculdun has an unsavory past, possibly criminal. Mon was willing to look past that to get him to launder money for her, but when he made the (potential) wedding between his son and Leida a condition of his assistance, she had to choose between the rebellion and her daughter.
But yeah, the father of the bride handing the groom a shiv, with the exchange “I will not return this knife” “Do with it whatever you wish” is really creepy.
It was explicitly mentioned in season 1 that she was 13. So 14 at the arranged marriage.
Mon is in an unhappy political sham marriage and didn’t want the same fate for her daughter (especially since the arrangement is her fault). Also her father in law would be a gangster. I don’t think that part goes beyond that.
She’s a crap mother.
Great character and crap mother. Your daughter’s wedding is about what she wants not flashbacks to your unhappy marriage and imposing that as her experience. If you actually listened to your child, made any effort to connect with her, you’d be hearing her say that this is what she wants. She is at most just unhappy that her husband to be isn’t physically demonstrative yet and won’t hold her hand. She’s about to walk down the aisle, nervous, and you dump on her how unhappy your marriage has been and try to get her to back out? Not cool parenting.
I think I’m going to mostly stay away from the thread so I don’t threadshit but I hated it. I didn’t like S1 and I disliked this even more. And I LOATHED the 3 episode release. I’m only watching just in case a switch flips and I like it (The Clone Wars cartoon took a long time to hit for me) or Something Important That Will Be Relevant In Some Other Show happens. It feels really lonely because it feels like almost everyone else loves it.
I guess for me it has too much Star Wars for a show about tyranny and too much bureaucracy for my pew pew fandom. I mean, I know the fascist undertones are a huge part of it from the beginning, but there’s a balance and this show tips it over for me. I was hoping I’d warm up to it a bit but alas…
I gotta say you’ve given it a fair shot! If you haven’t like it after all of S1 and three eps into S2, it’s probably rational to conclude it is not for you!
