You were right. Not a damned thing happened. I was kind of hoping Carlin would slap her and calmly walk off stage. But alas.
Looks like that was it.
Somebody buy the woman a meal or twelve. She looks hungry.
No fireworks. I say again, total work. She even called her spots with Carlin. Lame.
I guess the most impressive thing we’re gonna get is the “This machine kills fascists” sticker on K.T. Tunstall’s guitar.
And the more I look at her, the more I think that Ann Coulter may be Janel Moloney’s evil twin. She’s like the anti-Donna Moss. Her evilocity has caused her to be gaunt and creepy-looking.
The audience seemed pretty Pro-coulter. Hmmm. bush jokes usually get a decent amount of laughs on that dumb show. I missed her coming out, did anyone boo?
Oh please. You said it’d be “worked” yesterday meaning they’d fake some confrontation. There weren’t any zingers. Carlin’s joke wasn’t even at her expense.
No, I said it would be staged, and I think it was. Ray Charles coulda seen Carlin’s little jab coming. Coulter gets a couple more equally feeble jabs, pimps the book, and puts herself over.
NBC prolly did want them to tangle. Did all they could to facillitate it. Everybody stuck to the script, and the Coulter marks go home happy. My guess would be that Coulter didn’t want any part of Carlin, and he chose the high road…though you could see it pained him to do so at times.
I agree with the first part, but not the second. The editing seemed to be dodging confrontation to me. Jay could have made that situation into a moment that people would be talking about for a week, he didn’t. Whether the network had anything to do with that is anybody’s guess.
You said something about zingers. You think she was insulted by his comment that she’s on the right?
I wonder if she knows the history of that, or if it’s just the cool thing the kids are doin’ these days?
CMC fnord!
Note that I said nothing about the quality/intensity thereof. And expected a rather tame show, as it turned out to be.
Sometimes it just happens: pwned!
I’m guessing she does. Most musicians I’ve met are pretty hip on their musical roots and lore, particularly with regards to folks who play the same instrument. I, on the other hand, had no clue. Thanks for the link.
Before I opened the link, I had a sinking feeling that this phrase was going to turn out to be the nose art on a T-34 tank.
I agree that Leno totally sucked any potential out of the show. But I haven’t watched it in years, so I don’t know how much of a show business weasel he’s grown into (although I guess the doritos commercials and SGropinator support are pretty good indicators). He kept Ann talking, without allowing for any interaction with Carlin, although they did seem to want to tangle from time to time. She kept making comments, not really even jabs, and turning toward Carlin. But Leno kept her going, and gave her the soapbox she wanted, while offering only the most feeble counters… And the pre-loaded rightwing Greek chorus of Coulter groupies removed any remaining shred of spontaneity.
Compare with Stewart’s masterful handling of Ken Mehlman. He opted to avoid a confrontational approach, instead taking a sympathetic, even pitying tack that totally disarmed Mehlman and actually allowed a couple of non-rehearsed answers to slip out that weren’t based on talking points… all while allowing for Mehlman to retain his dignity, even maybe garnering a little bit of, well not respect (the self-loathing closeted gay Republican role is a little to awkward for that), but maybe understanding from the left leaning crowd.
Yeah, that was a real let down, but I did notice George was making a few faces, as if he wanted to say something, but figured he’d keep his mouth shut. That is, when the camera did pan on him-most of the time, they kept focused on Ann, which struck me as interesting. Was it on purpose?
I also think that a TON of her fans managed to get tickets that night. All the hooting and cheering-had to be. Probably some Freepers.
Wow. I of course knew who Ann Coulter is and about some of the vile crap that comes out of her mouth, but I’d never seen / heard her speak before. I was actually going to start a thread in GQ asking if she’s for real. I’m being serious here. She sounds like she’s doing a bad imitation of Samantha on Sex & the City. How can anyone take her seriously when she’s like a cartoon? I’m not particularly political and don’t tend to read about her. Has her outlandish appearance and mannerisms been a subject of ridicule? (How could it not). Don’t misunderstand; I’m not usually given to judging a person’s opinions or intelligence based on how they look. But as someone who has heard a lot about her but never seen her, I was really shocked and could hardly believe she’s not some kind of joke, like Dame Edna or something(though Dame Edna is more attractive).
I notice Coulter’s book has slipped to #2 on Amazon.com, so maybe there is hope.
The audience was full of right wingers. The went wild cheering a mention of Tom Delay early in the show.
I saw Coulter come out. Decided I couldn’t listen to her even if she did get into it with Carlin and turned it off.
Stephen Colbert was on Letterman. I watched that instead.
