It’s all a plot by the liberal media. To cheapen the intellectual image of the Republican Party they shower media attention on the Ann Coulters and Rush Limbaugh’s, and completely ignore the compelling and insightful conservative spokespersons like Harmon Fensternagle!
How about William McGowan? He wrote Coloring the News, a much, much better book than Slander, which made many of the same points. In fact, his book recently won an award from the National Press Club. He isn’t even a conservative – just an honest, observant liberal. However, who here has heard of him or read his book?
You’ve now heard of Barbara Olson, because she was a 9/11 victim. But, how many of you know that she wrote Hell to Pay, a low-key, well researched book critical of Hillary Clinton?
The unfortunate fact is, Ann’s over-the-top style is effective for self-promotion and effective for getting he POV across. There are lots of better conservative writers, but they are indeed mostly invisible.
You liked 2112? Who is this “next guy”, and does he also like 2112? Preposterous. Two people somewhere in the universe enjoying 2112, that I can vaguely picture in my mind’s eye as a possibilty, but two adjacent people? Surely you jest, friend.
Excuse me, JonScribe, but I have to butt in and make this reference:
“No, I’m not jesting. And don’t call me Shirley.”
Hi-yo!
My favorite people are the Ann Coulter defenders who say “you just don’t like outspoken women who are smarter than you.” To which I reply “Hillary Clinton” and their heads explode.
I used to think the same thing about Limbaugh. Theory was that if I were writing a parody of a right-wing demagogue, I’d put precisely the same words in his mouth. It’s still an appealing theory, even though I’m no longer ridiculously high and scrounging the pantry for potato chips at 1:30 in the morning.
Well, there’s George Will and William Buckley. William Safire’s not bad There just is this nasty tendency I’ve noticed, by both sides of the ideological spectrum to use name calling and demonization.

“Well researched” in much the same way as Coulter is with all her lauded “footnotes.” I.e., he cites the unfounded speculation she agrees with. Olson was a polemicist much like Coulter, and one of Coulter’s best friends (which is one reason I think Coulter went so overboard after 9/11).
Limbaugh has been subjected to many critical articles and books – often designed precisely to portray him as a parody of a right-wing demogogue. To get a fair understanding of what he does, one should listen to the entire show for a few days. Pulling a few atypical bits out of a radio show is just as inaccurate as pulling a few atypical bits out of a court decision.
No, no, no. She suggested only that we might convert the survivors to Christianity. She made no mention of any attempt to convert dead religious leaders.
I finally got a copy of Slander from the library. I agree with Coulter’s critics that some of her criticisms are beyond the pale and some of her footnoted points are questionable. However…
This book is very persuasive in its thesis, because of the many, many examples. Coulter’s off-the-wall comments like those posted on this thread are indefensible. However, many of the examples in her book are just as bad. E.g., It is not uncommon for liberals to publicly call for the death of conservatives, as Skid Row’s did above. At least, Coulter called for the death and religious conversion of murderers of Americans.
Also, conservative books get demonized, even when they’re low key and accurate. Two examples are David Brock’s The Real Anita Hill and Unlimited Access, by Gary Aldrich. (By the way, I’m well aware that Brock has switched allegences, but anyone who reads his book and the book’s critics will realize how well it stands up.) If the Democrats had paid attention to Unlimited Access they might have avoided the whole Lewinsky scandal, and Gore might be President right now.
At this point, I would automatically distrust almost anything Ann Coulter says. I’d look for the original sources for all those “just as bad” quotes before I take them as fact.
