another addition to our little group

No, not a new moderator! But :dubious: has arrived. Thank you jdavis.

N.B. the “text to replace” for the new smiley is “:dubious:” (without the quotation marks.)

Neato.

Welcome to the SDMB, Dubious!

:dubious:
Are we sure we needed this?

(just testing)

:dubious: I heard Arnold is working for the smilie lobby.

I don’t know, I’m a bit :dubious about this claim. Cite?

Testing . . .

:dubious:

How come it doesn’t need the closing colon? :dubious:
closing colon… sounds like a renal disorder… :dubious

Hmmm . . . I think you might want to add that closing colon to the “text to replace” for consistency with the other smileys. Notice how people are including it out of habit. I don’t think people will easily remember that “Dubious” is the only one without it.

:dubious why do you want to know Amp?

You forgot :wally which also doesn’t have a closing colon. We were inconsistent before :dubious came along.

I haven’t used the smackster and I won’t use this one. Fie on new smilies.

Got something against smilies, have you, Lightning? Interesting :dubious

: checks Smilies pop-up :

Well I’ll be danged. You oughta fix that one too!

(Yeah, I know – consistency, hobgoblins, little minds, etc. I’m a copyeditor, it’s my job, shut up. )

My personal preference is: if the text to replace for a smiley is a simple graphical symbol or a single letter, like  or :j then only use one colon.
Is the text to replace for the smiley is a “word” like :wally or :dubious then use two colons - :wally: or :dubious:.
However:
:wally has been around too long to change it now, to add the requirement of a second colon. (Was added before I was a moderator.)
jdavis added :smack: with two colons and :dubious with one colon. I could change :dubious: to require two colons, but heck, I figure this will be one of the little quirks about our board that make life more interesting.

We used to have a poster named Dubious, er, Doobieous.

IIRC, he was somewhat “interested in colons” too.

Was it necessary for me to jump on the bandwagon? :dubious

I hereby move that the  be renamed :winkie: in honor of Arnold’s tireless dedication to the cause of smiley liberation. All in favour?
(And, no, Arnold, you don’t get to vote! )

:dubious

Cool!

Mr. Dubious seems to be missing his sledgehammer. Will that be added later?
