Another "help me name my parrot" thread

A good friend, inspired by my African Grey, has decided to buy a female Eclectus parrot. The female is bright red with a blue front and is quite very pretty. My friend has asked me to ask you to help name her.

She isn’t sure exactly what she wants but suggests one of the following:

A litterary figure.
A heroine
A goddess
A woman famed for her beauty.

But heck, all fun suggestions welcome.

Norwegian Blue?

Sounds a bit to me like something you would buy in little ziploc-type baggies from a shady-looking guy walking around the streets with a backpack at 11:00 at night. But maybe that’s just me.

Goddess–Nike? Athena? Venus?

Ooh–here we go–not quite in the Goddess category: Amelia Earhart? You know…flying, birds…

Bessie Coleman :pilot

Goddesses:

I like Athena. Short, easy to remember,
Pandora.
Ruby Bridges

Annie Edson Taylor first person to go over the Niagara FAlls and survive.

Famous literary parrot: Polynesia, after Dr. Doolittle’s parrot.

Literary heroine AND woman known for her beauty AND refers to the color of the parrot: *Katie Scarlett, after Scarlett O’Hara.

The above post made me decide to throw Delphi into the mix.

Perhaps you best not, or frankly my dear, the parrot won’t be able to format worth a damn.

:o

(The “embarrassment” smiley always looks like “yawning” to me, and that’s my excuse – it was early! I had just gotten up!)

Frank Zappa had a bird named Bird Reynolds. I always liked that name.

But it’s a female… how about Valerie Birdinelli or Lady Bird Johnson?

Bette Davis? FYI: A very common name for parrots in the Netherlands is ‘Lorre’. I have no idea why, actually.

I just went with my friend to pick up her bird, which was shipped to an airport close by. She is very pretty. Her colors are absolutely brilliant and so I have suggested Pheonix, because of the brilliant red. My friend however, wants to hear more of your suggestions.

Larry.

Larry…:::snerk::::
How about Fawkes, after the Phoenix in Harry Potter.

Rita? [Hayworth]
Lucille? [Ball]
Lolita Davidovitch? That wouldn’t be fair on the parrot, huh, trying to say it’s name]
Mnemosyne? [the goddess of memory]

all redheads.

I kinda like gum’s suggestion of going with a famous red head. Anyone have any other redheads in mind?

My friend is kinda leaning towards a new angle - take a traditional dog’s name or cat’s name and translate it to another language. She thinks that is clever. Anyone know how to say “fido” in other languages?

Any other good ideas?

Feathers McGraw

That would be a good name for an ex-parrot who’s pinin’ for the fjords, perhaps…
But in all seriousness, why not Pele, the volcano goddess?

‘Fikkie’ would be the Dutch equivalent of Fido. Don’t know a specific cat name.

‘Rooie’ - pronounced: ‘Roh yuh’, means redhead in Dutch.

The species name roratus, could be cool with some tweaking. How about Aurora? Seems pretty fitting, especially when looking at dictionary.com’s definition for aurora:

Italics mine.
