About six weeks ago, I lost my dear Trillian. My brother was at my place, and attempting to cook a piece of chicken. He’s one of those folks that can turn just about anything into a disaster.
What’s that have to do with a lost kitty? Well, he filled the whole apartment with smoke. Naturally, this set off the fire alarm. The alarm in this building is linked to the three adjacent buildings, and an alarm in any apartment will notify the fire department. During all the commotion, the firemen opened a bunch of windows in my apartment, including one with no screen. You can see where this is going.
Long story short, out the window she went, before I noticed it was open. She’s not an outdoor kitty, and never found her way back.
OK, enough of the sad part, the real reason for a thread like this is an excuse to post cute kitty pics! So, fast-forward to Thanksgiving, when I learned that my grandmother had two kittens that needed homes. Notice I use the past tense… They no longer need a home. They’re eight weeks old, one boy, one girl.
Not the best pics yet. My other cat, Petunia, is old, set in her ways, and not too thrilled with the new additions. So she’s terrorizing them into hiding at the moment. I haven’t thought of names yet… The right name sort of chooses itself as you get to know the kitty. The naming of cats is a difficult matter, it isn’t just one of your holiday games…
Cute, but hellions! That’s what made me unable to resist taking both of them. I went there thinking about just one, but after seeing them play together I didn’t have the heart to separate them.
Yeah, it’s possible, but not likely. I have no doubt she found a new home. She isn’t the brightest bulb on the tree, so getting lost doesn’t surprise me. She is hyper-affectionate, and not remotely afraid of strangers, though. I live in a dense suburban area, with lots of families who’d take in a kitty like her.
The little ones are still in hiding. Tuna (Petunia) started hissing like a broken record the moment she saw them. I suspect it’ll take a few days for the three of them to sort things out. Tuna’s also giving me the cold shoulder now, for bringing them into her domain. Ahh, feline politics.
Sorry about the loss of Trillian, hoping she either finds her way back to you or has found herself some new slaves to care for her.
Adorable babies!
I’m sure Petunia will adapt, given time. Animals usually do learn to co-exist with new household members.
That’s my approach to pet naming in most cases. Spend a few days or so getting to know him/her, then the right name becomes evident.
In the case of my current cat, she’d spent a year known to her prior family as Alley, so we decided to keep the name she was used to, but change the spelling to Allie (we thought the previous version cutesy/goofy, not in keeping with Her Feline Majesty’s dignity).
My cat Merlin went missing one day and since he was an obese, helpless, inside kitty, I thought he’d either been eaten by a coyote (happens a lot around here), hit by a cat, or just starved to death. A few months later we got another cat. Then 9 months later, we got a phone call from a local vet that someone had brought in Merlin, now thin and athletic, as he was catching and eating pidgins in her backyard.
