I really don’t think that Weiner can help himself, maybe he suffers from priapism. In the 17th/18th century it used to be said that everyone had a ‘ruling passion’, one passion that overrode all others. As Pope put it in the first epistle of the Moral Essays:
SEARCH thou the ruling passion; there, alone,
The wild are constant, and the cunning known;
The fool consistent and the false sincere;
Priests, princes, women, no dissemblers here.
Wiener’s ruliing passion is lust. That one passion dominates and outrules all others. it means that even in the midst of an electoral race in which he is driven by his passion to achieve power, the power to help others, his ruling passion simply has to snap its fingers and all else is put on hold while Wiener is sexting. The dangers, the likelihood of being caught and exposed once again in the media with the consequent implosion of his mayoral campaign, none of this matters. The ruling passion is in absolute command.
I do feel sorry for the guy. He could easily end up doing prison time for this. Truly an American Tragedy.

Almost nobody is saying he should go to jail (unless he deliberately sent pics to minors), but this kind of behavior is what I expect from exhibitionists or irresponsible teenagers, not members of Congress.
(He’s not the only lawmaker caught up in this sort of scandal, which is sort of weird…)
Nearest I can tell, aside from narcissism and dominance signaling, is it’s the typical mind fallacy at work. Guys are visually oriented and would like it if women sent naked pics to them, so they assume women would appreciate the same. These men may see signs of this not being true in the wider culture, but may just dismiss it as examples of women laboring under the double standard and having to keep up a front while believing differently in private.
I expect he made a plea deal to get a community service/probation sentence and wouldn’t have agreed if prison was a possibility.
Trump may want to add him to the short list for FBI Director.
There is another legal position probably opening up shortly: Deputy Attorney General, currently held by Rod J. Rosenstein. While he has only been in that position a month, it’s clear Trump will feel he is not up to the job (by making the incredibly stupid mistake of appointing a Special Counsel to investigate the President’s associates).
Instead of jail he should required to repair to local schools and warn classes of dopey teenagers about the evils of sexting.
How about warning dopey adults. They’re the ones who are supposed to know better. Especially ones that are elected to Congress.

I expect he made a plea deal because he knew he was guilty and how easy it was going to be for the prosecution if he went to trial. It’s not like this case would have been decided over conflicting testimony. The picture is physical evidence and the age of the girl isn’t going to be subject to dispute.
Pretty sure it’s going to be a long time before Weiner is allowed on any school property.
