Yep, those silly gun control people. All they want to do is shoot people up! And conversely, all those “no gun regulation” people. All they want to do is never use guns at all!
To a certain extent, I think that everybody thinks that their own thinking is “normal.”
I don’t know if the guy was pro-gun control or not. The local papers are mostly focusing on the fact that a state senator was
a) trying to blow his ex away with a shotgun, and
b) butt-ass naked at the time.
Understandably, his political stances are a bit of an afterthought at the moment :o
Another case of a law-abiding citizen getting angry, grabbing the most effective means of emotional response handy, and suddenly becoming no longer law-abiding but actually murderous.
If you accept that it can happen to anybody else, no matter how principled and motivated they may be when not angry, then you have to accept that it can happen to you too, right?
No, my former wife is alive and well. 
I don’t accept that it can happen to me too. Then again, I spend very little time shooting at my ex-girlfriend’s car whilst naked. YMMV.

I think you are trying to convince us of the truth of this -
If you are convinced by introspection that everyone is one break up away from a nude shoot out, then obviously no one should have guns. The flaw in the logic is that most people don’t have the impulse control issues that this person does.
So the idea that he apparently had of “Everyone else is as big an ass dingle as I am” is not a good basis for public policy.

Well, no - I have broken up with girl friends (although not for the last thirty-some years) and somehow I managed to keep my pants on and my name out of the newspapers.
As I said above, the notion that all it takes is the right trigger and I will drop trou and open fire isn’t valid.
If they pre-empt Wheel of Fortune, though, all bets are off.

Aw, the old “Everyone could be a cheater / cannibal / Sith Lord / child molester under the right circumstances” line. It curiously ignores the concept of a person having an absolute morality for certain circumstances.
Nothing about the OP story suggests anyone was particularly principled, quite the opposite. It’s the same story, apart from a few details, of the gay-hater who gets caught with 5 dicks in him in a public restroom. Looks a lot like projection and not much else.

Curiously, the folks I know who do own a ton of guns and want minimal restrictions do everything they can to avoid/prevent situations where the gun has to come out. Again, projection: they assume everyone will be as sensible and diligent as they are.

Not that I gave you much to separate sincerity from sarcasm. Truth be told I was just teasing Shodan, not defending the drunken, nude shotgunner. Believe it or not, there is a difference between those two propositions.
Leaving out “nude”, what convinces me is the tens of thousands of gun deaths a year in the US.
IOW, most gun owners have zero murders to their credit. True but hardly a basis for sound public policy.
