I’ll be in Biloxi, MS for about seven weeks this summer (exact dates to come in a day or two). I figure this would be as good a time as any to organize a 'Dope, since there probably aren’t enough 'Dopers in my area to warrant one.
New Orleans seems like the logical place to hold a 'Dope, simply because there’s really not much to do in Biloxi other than hit the casinos
I’m throwing this out to see who’s interested, and to see who has ideas on what to do in New Orleans. The French Quarter seems like the logical place to hold it: hot dog vendors everywhere, you’re never more than a stone’s throw from a frozen Hurricane, and I was never carded once there. It’s OK, I’m 22; underage 'Dopers will be on the integrity program.
I made it to one in New Orleans about a year and a half ago. I could conceivably do it again, as I’m planning a Houston-to-Pensacola trip sometime this summer.
I’ll always come down to New Orleans, but I’d love it to be a bit earlier, say in July if that works for anyone else. The MCAT is August 14th so it’s probably not that good of an idea for me to leave town the weekend before, much as I might want to.

Oddly, there are probably a bunch of Dopers who would know better than I about good places to hang out, since I’ve not really hung around the Quarter at all, but I DO live here. I’d be up for it.
But whatever happens, it’s gotta be someplace air conditioned. That’s my only requirement.
There’s lots to see and do in New Orleans, without ever leaving the Quarter. Unless Papa Tiger gets that job in Oak Ridge (please, please, please…he got laid off last month…please, please, please, ANY job right now is better than NO job and Oak Ridge is a damn sight better than some of the alternatives), I’ll be here and will be glad to be in on planning. It’s safe to say that you can’t turn around without tripping over a bar, but there’s also lots of yummy food, of course; and for those who are musically inclined, if a date is decided upon, I can check who’s playing where; it’s safe to say that if you want to drink, attending a show in town won’t stop you. (They even sell Hurricanes at sporting events around here – heck, the MALL even has a daiquiri stand!)
Shucks, you’ll JUST miss the Satchmo Summerfest, which is a small music festival that takes places on the grounds of the Old Mint in early August. But it’s the weekend after you leave.
However, it’s not like that’s the only thing going on – let’s see what dates other people come up with and I’m sure we can figure something out! Will you have transportation from Keesler to NOLA?
MamaTiger: I’ll be driving down there. However, my car (a '94 Honda Accord) currently has over 160,000 miles on it. She’ll probably make it down there (I took her down to SoCal and back), but it’s good to have a backup plan.
By the way, didn’t your TigerCub go there? I seem to remember that he was going in as ComProg.
I’ll jump in, being the older sister of the one you call TigerCub – yeah, he was there. Now he’s in Omaha. I hope he gets to go somewhere more interesting down the line. You will be within EXTREMELY easy reach of New Orleans once you’re there; it’s an easy day trip.
whiterabbit: I know, I went to Keesler for my initial tech school too. In fact, I spent about half of my time there in the same squadron that your brother went to. That was because the squadron I was assigned to didn’t have any rooms left. That was kinda nice; the squadron I started at was a new building. Later, I had to go to the squadron I was assigned to. It was known as the ghetto, and for a reason (it was pretty much a CONDEMNED BUILDING).
Anyhoo, I only went to New Orleans once during that time… and that was because my mom came to visit. I didn’t have a car.
It’s only an hour and a half from Keesler to NOLA, so it’s an easy drive. Yes, TigerCub was there; we even went to see him a few times, mostly to take him stuff he wanted and then he’d ditch us as quickly as humanly possible. Hey, when your parents live practically next door, it’s just not a big deal seeing them, you know? He’s off mostly doing CBTs now at Offutt, waiting for some coursework or something or other to arrive so he can get his 5 level. Not a bad gig, since he only spends his money on a big fancy TV and every video game his little heart desires.
But anyway, presumably by that time Papa Tiger will no longer be amongst the ranks of the laid off, and as long as we haven’t moved halfway across the country, one or another of us could probably be persuaded to make a trip over to Biloxi to do chauffeur duty. And to eat the Friday or Saturday buffet at the Bilixo Boomtown, which is pretty darned good if I do say so myself. And maybe even donate a few $$ to the casino at some point.
Okay, I think Margaritaville would be a good place to start. Oh, and you all planning to attend, when do you think the ideal date would be? I don’t know of any events going on down there. Suggestions, please?
Well, looks like it’s gonna be a MicroDope so far. Anyone who plans to attend, let’s take this to email. Send it to mmercer22 * adelphia * net (you know what goes where in an email address.)
