UncleBeer and I will be vacationing in New Orleans over Thanksgiving weekend. Any local and/or near-local dopers interested in a mini-fest one evening that weekend? Our schedule is flexible - we’re arriving on Tuesday evening 11/26 and leaving Sunday morning 12/1. We’re staying in the French Quarter and will be carless, but somehow I think we might be able to find any appropriate establishment somewhere nearby for a fest.
In the past, I’ve always called any calls for mini-fests while travelling “porcupine does <city name>” so I wanted to call this thread “porcupine does New Orleans (and…errr… with UncleBeer) - Thanksgiving weekend” but I don’t piss them moderatators off with suggestive thread titles. Plus it’s too damn long.
Well, I have never been to any dopefest and am only about 1 hour from New Orleans. Yeah, I’m interested, but I am not nearly as popular and outspoken as some of the other posters. I love this idea, and I hope it gets some more responses. After all, how much fun are UncleBeer and porcupine going to have with just me?
Yes! Or, well, I’m workin’ the idea. Unc, sorry, I’ve been remiss in replying to you.
I’ll know in the next week or two. I am definitely contemplating the road trip, and if it’s just four of us, that’ll be fine. BUT! I know we have some N.O./LA Dopers; let’s round 'em up!
Another possible recruitee is my little sis, who’s lived there since 1978; I don’t know, though - she’s a social butterfly - might be hard to catch.
One way or another, I am on to the plan, porcupine.
Seriously, even if it’s just a small group, don’t let that stop you from meeting up with us. It’s always good to meet dopers.
As far as what day might be the best, Tuesday is out because that’s the night we’re arriving and it would be a miracle if we both arrive on-time, and Saturday wouldn’t be the best if it’s a late night since we’re leaving Sunday morning. Maybe Friday?
Also, if anyone’s available during the day on whatever day we decide, a Doper Voodoo/Cemeterary tour would be fun, or a stop at the Pharmacy Museum.
and I’ll count Coldfire as a maybe just to annoy him.
Unless someone complains, let’s plan on Friday, November 29th. Any locals have a suggestion for a good place to meet in the French Quarter? I personally tend to prefer a quieter place along the river where we can talk over dinner and drinks, rather than a raucous place on Bourbon.
I will do some research and see what I can come up with for possible meeting places. Along the river? Budget? Smoking, non? DMC and I are smokers, but very polite ones. So it’s not a big deal to us. Oh and kind of food? Authentic? Sorry. I have learned in five short months that there are way too many good places to eat here… And the tightness of my jeans shows it!
Thanks, CMC. Here’re my thoughts - Since we’re on vacation, we’re not going to be watching our money too closely, so something in the $25+ range is ok with us, but I can’t speak for others (except for UncleBeer :D). Some authentic local food (seafood in particular) would be wonderful - I’m not a big shellfish fan, but as long as I can get fish on the non-shell variety I’m happy. Non-smoking table for dinner - when I’m not eating I can tolerate smoke just fine, though.
I am extremely adaptable, so anywhere is fine. Friday is fine too, I’ll probably be in town anyway, because I am off that day and I love to shop. I’ll ask around about places to eat. There must a thousand great places in a 10 block radius!!
Check out Port of Call on Esplenade. On a Friday night, I would reserve a table about an hour before you want to eat, and drink yourselves some Monsoons. Best alcoholic beverage I’ve ever had, and they’re freaking huge.
Sounds wonderful to me. I’ve been dying to go to any sort of Dopefest, mini or not. I’m sure I’ll be the youngest person attending, but 18 is old enough to do anything you want in New Orleans. No problems there.
The date is fine for me, and I look forward to meeting y’all.
Doubtful. I’m actually in Baton Rouge, carless (sold it when moved to campus since don’t need it) and it would be a pain getting driven both to the city and around the city.
