Any dopers in the Bay Area?

Oh yeah, I’ve been meaning to check that place out for a while now. The outside definitely looks cool. What’s also cool is that it’s not too far from a really cool bar we just recently found called Buzz-9, that might be fun to hang out afterwards. It’s only about five blocks away.

I’ve never had dim sum, so I’d be interested in that as well. We’re free this weekend (so far) and possibly next weekend.

Oh and Nik, your website is very cool! And, thanks for initiating this, always interested in meeting more Dopers.

Canton Seafood & Dim Sum House
655 Folsom St. (between Hawthorne & 3rd St.)
phone: 415.495.3064

Hours: Monday - Friday (10:30 am - 9:30 pm), Saturday - Sunday (10 am - 9:30 pm)

Thirty-six kinds of dim sum draw the lunch crowd, while the dinner menu emphasizes Cantonese cuisine. Specialties are the mainstays: Peking duck, Mongolian beef and chow mein.

I can make any day but the 20th.

I don’t do food from other lands, but if there’s maybe a secondary meeting afterwards at another establishment (glug, glug) I’m in for that.

The W looks very cool, but possibly too $$$ for a casual (possibly loud) get together.

I like the way you think. haha.

I’d totally be down for a BAD meeting somewhere, but unless its before the 16th, I’m afraid I wont be here. College is starting back up and I’ve got to make the drive back down to UC Santa Barbara around then.

I’m in. I’d love to do dim sum (Demo, I can’t believe you’ve never had dim sum – you must at least give it a try), but I’m open to other suggestions as well. The City is always best for me, unless someone wants to give me a ride. Let’s try to pin down a date.

Oh, and welcome, menudomucho.

Dim Sum = Yummmy!
Like you really would want that asshole with the stupid name to come… :stuck_out_tongue:
Keep me posted as to what you all decide. I have to drive to Sac every other weekend to pick up my G/F’s son but maybe I will get lucky and it will not be one of those weekends.
(like she’d let me go hang out with internet strangers anyway… but I can be sneaky!)

V V, we could BART in together. I’m just a few miles up the street from the UC station.

SpoilerVirgin (Hmm, there really is no nickname-y way to say that, is there? Spoiley Nah. Virg? Nope.) Aaanyway, I’m totally down with the Dim Sum and definitely plan on trying it, even if it doesn’t work out this time around.

Just to add another alternative for dinner, if other places don’t appeal to everyone, the lounge I linked earlier, Buzz-9 also has a restaurant upstairs that is stylish, reasonably priced ($8-15 per plate), should be able to seat 10-15 people without a problem if we got them a reservation soon and has a multinational menu, so there should be something for everyone.

Looks like some people aren’t going to be available later in the month. This Saturday(the 13th) is still open for us. What are our other date suggestions?

I do believe Saturday is a go for me. I can also give rides to anybody from the East Bay if you can get to me or aren’t too far out of the way. I live smack in between downtown and N.Berkeley BART stations and I’m more than willing to pick anybody up for a ride wherever we end up going.

Some good places in San Francisco
Rocco’s Cafe, is an Italian Diner on Folsom near 7th street.
Barney’s burgers near Chestnut st at 3344 Steiner.
Sweet Inspiration (cakes and deserts mainly) on Filmore, or Market in Castro district
Massawa, Eritrean cuisine, 1538 Haight St.
Amira, pan-Arabian cuisine, 590 Valencia St (a bit pricy, but they have live belly dancing

If we’re doing it this Saturday, let’s begin to set a time. 11:00 AM is still good for me, what about other people? I’ve got a SF based bachelor’s party that starts at 5:00 PM so early is better for me. I’m up for anything, but since Demo has never tasted the wonder that is dim sum, I’m still placing my vote firmly in that corner. You get a lot of variety to share and different styles to taste while still ending up with a reasonable tab. The Canton restaurant is near the freeway and within walking distance of Bart or Caltrain, so there are lots of options. I’ve eaten there a few times and the food is quite acceptable. Maybe someone can reconnoiter for a good dive to imbibe at afterwards.

I won’t be available saturday until about 4 pm onwards (haircut in Santa Rosa at 1 pm), but, like Vix said, I’d still be happy to meet up with people for drinks afterwards.

I’m up for dim sum this 13th at the above location, 11:30 or later would be good for me since I have errands to run that morning. Anyone else in?

Nik

Can’t guys. Sorry, I wish I could. Zenster, is this weekend set in stone? Or is the 27th a possibility?

We can still arrange something for the last weekend of this month too if people can’t make it this Saturday.

I could do dim sum this Saturday if there’s interest, or we can try for something later in the month.

Demo - some people call me SV, but I kind of like it when they just go wth SpoilerVirgin – makes the vanity searches so much easier.

Wait a minute, does a dopefest count as contributing to the delinquincy of a minor? Cause I’ve got just about enough of that right about now.

The 27[sup]th[/sup] works for me as well.

The 27th, as far as I know, is wide open.

And another idea for another gathering, a good friend of mine bartends at Pompei’s Grotto. It’s right in Fisherman’s Wharf (right across from In ‘N’ Out and Hooters), but it’s most definitely not a tourist trap. The bartender is very fun and cool, and the regulars are a goofy bunch.
