I imagine HP works pretty much the same as FTP but you can’t play on HP from FTP. Just go to hollywoodpoker.com and if you’re on a Mac click on the Create An Account link. There’s a download version for PCs but I don’t know where on the page you’d go about downloading it.
If anyone who’s not already a Hollywood Poker member wants to split a referral bonus email me before setting up an account and I’ll set it up.
If the tournament is set up on HP then you can access it through HP or PR (and I assume any of the other skins within the same network although I haven’t checked). The tournament will have my ID as the name (Otto93’s). The password will be DOPE.
I signed up with Hollywood Poker. Looks like a good site. I’m sure that there may be some Dopers who are a little rusty at Poker (including me, haven’t played in 20 years), who would be interested in playing on play money tables until they get rid of the rust and moving up to money games. Any chance there could be some play-money tables set up for Dopers as well? We could, of course, play play-money games with non-Dopers, but that wouldn’t be as much fun.
Play money-only players are on a separate server from real money-enabled players. That was one of the problems with the original PR game attempts; some people didn’t want to real money-enable their accounts so we could never all find each other.
As far as I’m concerned, Friday is set in concrete. It’s not as if there can be only one tournament ever. Anyone who wants to set one up can do so and announce it either here or in a separate thread.
will you have 2 browsers open - one for the tourney and one for the Dope - so in case we can’t find you in poker, you’ll be here in SDMB to provide directions/instructions?
I had AIM ages ago - I let it expire from lack of use, and by the time I went to reactivate it, I had forgotten my password, and changed email address. They wouldn’t clear the old info so I could reuse it, so i created a new one. Then the same thing happened a few years later. So i opted to never use AIM again. Besides, they send tons of unwanted email ads ( grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  )
But <sigh> i just created a new AIM account - I am anyrows on AIM
Ok I started a scheduled private tournament which is accessible to PokerRoom and Hollywood poker softwares. I did not have the option of naming the tourney so it’s listed as “JackShidt’s”. As I stated before, JackShidt is my username on multiple poker sites including PR. The specifications on the tourney are the similar to those suggested by Otto:
no limit holdem
ten players to a table
buy-in $5+.50
maximum players 30
minimum players 2
blind level speed normal
payout structure normal
no rebuys
password DOPE
starting time is 9pm EST February 3 (Friday night)
To find the tournament, click on ‘Tournaments’ at the top right, then click the ‘Private’ tab, and the tourney will be listed as “JackShidt’s” under the ‘scheduled’ tab. I assume this will be a small group but we will have fun.
The “+.50” is the amount of the buy-in that does not enter the prize pool, but rather goes to the house (poker site). That’s how the sites make money from tournaments. In ring games, the sites make money by raking a small percentage of the money in each pot but that’s irrelevant to us since we’re not playing a ring game.
In the tournament I set up, $5 goes toward the prize pool from each player, and 50 cents goes to the website from each player.
The minimum bet is the size of the big blind. The big and small blinds increase every few few minutes (i think it’s every 8 minutes under ‘normal speed’ settings at PR / HP). Every one will begin with 1500 chips and the initial big blind value will be 20 chips.
$5+.50 means that the total cost to play is $5.50, of which $5 goes into the prize pool. The other 50 cents is the “rake,” which is the house’s portion. For tournaments it’s often expressed as $5 is the buy-in and 50 cents is the entry fee.
The minimum bet will be based on the big blind. Pre-flop and on the flop, the minimum bet is equal to the blind. On the turn and river the minimum bet is twice the big blind. We’re all going to start with 1500 tournament chips. Blinds will start at 10 for the small blind and 20 for the big blind, and will escalate throughout the tournament.
I must send my regrets as I’ll be attending a long scheduled RL poker tourney at a buddy’s. I’ll give you a chance to take my money next time… Good job and thanks to ArchitectChore
