Anybody For Ice Cream? What's Your Favorite?

I discovered Baskin Robbins Caramel Cheesecake Praline something-or-other two days before they announce it was being discontinued for all time last week.

Generally, my favorites are Haagen-Daz or Breyers, or any brand that doesn’t use vegetable gums and fillers. French Vanilla, coffee, strawberry, mango, mmmm.

Or rainbow sherbet.

Agreed about the near-universal awesomeness that is Jeni’s. However, I have tried one flavor that I simply could not abide: Buttermint. It sounded good (hey, I do like mint flavored stuff), but actually eating it was akin to consuming frozen toothpaste. Not good.

Baskin-Robbins Pralines ‘n’ Cream

at home: plain vanilla, preferably breyer’s; dusted in powder chocolate milk mix; microwaved for 10-15 seconds

anywhere else: wendy’s chocolate frosty, mcdonald’s plain vanilla (in a cup)

You should be able to find coconut cream in the drinks/mixers section of any large grocery store or liquor store; it’s commonly stocked as a pina colada ingredient.

Ben and Jerry’s “Smores” is my favorite ice cream. I can’t be trusted with a pint of it, because I will eat the whole thing. Something about chasing the little pockets of graham cracker or marshmallow down to the bottom of the container.

Our local gelato joint has a “Chocolate Liqueur” flavor that’s delicious too. But given the choice, I’ll take Smores.

This summer I am moving away from ice cream and more towards frozen fruit bars. Lime, pineapple, strawberry- crushed up and frozen- mmmm, so much more refreshing and less thirst-causing than ice cream. Not that I don’t still love ice cream.

There’s a dish at the Union Dairy in Freeport Illinois, served in a little wooden trough called the Pig Dinner. Just about every kind of ice cream sundae piled in it. So good you want to go across the street and slap the statue of Abraham Lincoln. That’s my favorite flavor.

(BTW - notice how ice cream parlors have a wonderful, distinct smell; not present at Dairy Queen or even Baskin Robbins?)

Svenson Sticky Chewy Chocolate

Favorite ordinary flavor:
Mint Chip
Pistachio
Pralines and Cream

Don’t make me choose. Almost everyone makes a good one of one of those.

Favorite big brand ice cream manufacturer:
Ben and Jerry’s because they have the most interesting flavor combinations. Cinnamon roll, Americone Dream, and nearly every other flavor I have tried. They are all good

Runner up Hagan Daz:

Currently in love with Bananas Foster ice cream and the 5 series (ice cream made with only 5 ingredients. The best vanilla ice cream you have ever had)

Small parlor (and my primary reason for this post)
Mashti Malone’s
If you are ever in LA go there and get some saffron ice cream. It will blow your mind.

If I could have any ice cream dish in the world right now it would be this:

Banana split with double banana, one scoop chocolate with marshmallow topping, one scoop vanilla with dark chocolate syrup, non-dairy whipped topping, crushed walnuts, two maraschino cherries. Perfection.

Mint chocolate chip. My favorite was Baskin-Robbins recipe. Others are just not the same. The closest is one company (whose name escapes me) which occasionally offers a version with Frango mints.

Toscanini’s in Boston has my favourite flavours: Mango, Burnt Caramel and Saffron.

Theoretically, yes, but none of the big stores around here (in the middle of nowhere) have it. We looked a while back. Actually, come to think of it, I think we did find something that was supposed to be coconut cream, but the ice cream we made with it wasn’t very good, and it was a Ben and Jerry’s recipe. Hence, the continuing search.

My favorite flavor is Butter Pecan, but It’s getting hard to find.
My favorite homemade flavor is Cinnamon.

We’ve recently discovered Publix’s Chocolate Trinity. I keep thinking it’s called Triple Threat, which IMO is a much better name. Dark chocolate ice cream with ribbons of fudge and giant chocolate chunks. It’s yummy and half the price of regular brands.

Butter pecan
Mint chocolate chip

All else is blasphemy.

Horrors! Baskin-Robbins retires five flavors simultaneously: Five flavors frozen out at Baskin-Robbins - CNN.com

I noticed B-R retired French Vanilla which is rather surprising since that flavor has always been a staple. Are people just not buying it anymore?

As for my favorite flavors, peppermint is on top. However, there are quite a few I like almost as much like coffee, banana and most other fruit flavors, and hot cinnamon. Chocolate is okay but I like it better if it’s mixed with another flavor (e.g., chocolate-covered cherry or chocolate-banana).

Mackinac Island Fudge ice cream. “Butter fudge swirled into our original vanilla flavored ice cream with chocolate fudge pieces” according to the Hudsonville Ice Cream website. Anyone not from Michigan ever hear of it?

Häagen-Dazs used to sell peanut butter / chocolate ice cream in Chicago. This was so good. I can’t find anyone it in Chicago anymore. In fact I can’t find any chocolate / peanut butter ice cream.

Oh I find lots of ice cream with peanut butter cups throw in and that sort of thing, but not the chocolate ice cream with swirls of peanut butter.
