I really like pocket watches…unfortunately, one must wear a vest in order to use one. You usually have a watch chain, with the end looped around a vest button. The watch is in your vest pocket.
With the decline of 3-piece suits, most men stopped wearing vests (a great shame).
Anybody think pocket watches will come back?
I used to wear one (but I kept it in the little pocket-in-a-pocket in my jeans) It wasn’t terribly convenient.

Do you “wear” or “carry” a pocket watch?

Does it count if you carry your wrist-watch in your pocket because the band broke in 1998, and you just got used to having it that way?
I wear (carry?) a pocket watch which my wife gave me. I usualy just put it in my trouser pocket though, not in a waistcoat pocket. I wanted one because I am left handed and therefore wear a wristwatch on my right hand, where the mouse usually is for a computer. It got to be a huge pain in the butt to move the mouse or take off my watch every time I wanted to use a computer so I decided I wanted a pocket watch.
Now I want one with a cover that flips open because I think it would look cool
I carry a pocket watch.
Usually in my inside jacket pocket.
It’s my second one, after granddaddy’s silver CN watch gave up the ghost.
This one is plain gold and not nearly as nice – I hate gold, really – apart from being encased in the wrong metal, it’s a bit effete and a little inconvenient to open.
I’m in the market for another one.
I have one that I got a few weeks ago. I’m still looking for a chain to keep it on. I was thinking of using a shorter chain that attaches to a belt loop and keeping it in my pocket.
Anyhow coming back on topic, I was talking to an older gent who runs a watch store around here, and he said that one way to wear a pocket watch is to simply keep it in the inside pocket of your jacket and attach the chain to one of your suit jacket’s button holes.
Anybody know of a good online site to buy an inexpensive watch chain?
Man, I have about a dozen different pocket watches. I hate wristwatches, cuz I keep breaking them on things. I just carry my pocket watch in the watchpocket of my jeans, and everything is right with the world. I clip the chain to a belt loop, and tuck it into the pocket alongside the watch.
For good, inexpensive pocket watches, try:
I occasionally carry a pocket watch in the fifth pocket of my jeans - that’s what it’s there for, after all. It took me forever to find a plain silver pocketwatch - most of them have, like, hunting scenes or trains on them; apparently pocketwatches are the gift of last resort to give to grandfathers on gift-giving holidays.
I wear one inside my jacket. I prefer it to my wrist watch because the band I have smells like sweat.
I’ve worn pocket watches since I was in high school. Like silenus, I have an unfortunate tendency to smash the glass in wristwatches. I also don’t like having a wristwatch stripe on my arm in the summer time, nor do I particularly care for the nasty, sweaty smell that leather wristbands seem to acquire after a while.
My last two watches have been (believe it or not) aluminum sport pocket watches. I never would have thought that such a thing existed until I received one for Christmas. The first one was a Coleman that I had for several years until I lost the ring that connected the watch to the chain. My new one is a Timex Expedition. I clip the chain to the belt loop, and put the watch in the 5th pocket of my jeans, or just into my right pocket if wearing trousers. (I’m left handed, so my wallet and car keys are in my left pocket.)
And I’ll admit, I like the way the chain looks running from my belt loop to my pocket, and pulling a pocketwatch out to check the time is somehow more fun than just looking at my wrist, so it is an aesthetic choice as well as practical for me.
After having shattered the crystal on no less than three wristwatches and constantly having to teal with “wrist rot” from the band, I swore them off and have been only using pocketwatches for more than a decade.
Being that I do electronic work, I don’t wear any kind of metal on my hands and arms. I’ve worn pocket watches for years. I found, at Wally World, of all places, a pocket watch in a leather case that hangs from your belt. No more fishing around in a pocket, scratching the case on your keys and whatnot. The watch is fully encased in a leather fob and if easily snaps open and shut for viewing.
Cheers,
Vega
I also used to break crystals plus being left handed I never liked wearing a watch on my right arm. I did use a pocket watch for some time but had problems with it getting pocket lint inside the casing which hindered the operation. Now I don’t wear one at all. I figure I’ve got clocks at home, in my office, in my car, on my computer, etc If all of those damn clocks can’t get me there on time, I give up.
I’ve got one that I sometimes wear. It’s a University of British Columbia alumni watch that belonged to my grandmother, so my parents passed it on to me when I graduated. It’s on a long chain as my grandmother wore it like a necklace, but I find that annoying (plus I’m not overly fond of gold), so I’ll probably start carrying it in the fifth pocket of my jeans.
I wear a pocket watch too. I hate wristwatches, and I love the classic “retro” style of pulling out a pocket watch to check the time, and the look of having the chain hang down off my belt. I keep the watch in the small pocket in my jeans, or if I’m wearing slacks, it just hangs down in my regular side pocket.
Mine has a timeless brushed steel look to it, with a black face. People are always pretty impressed, and ask me if it’s an heirloom. The truth is, I paid $15 for it at Wal-Mart, which has a pretty good selection of attractive and affordable pocket watches. I am very pragmatic when it comes to watches, and I cannot see spending more than $25 for a watch of any kind. But mine looks sharp just the same!
I recently got one as a gift by a girlfriend who got sick to death of my always being late for everything. It has a very short chain which attaches to my key ring.
I have several pocket watches and don’t see myself ever going back to a wrist watch.
Heh. That’s funny.
I use a pocket watch. It normally just sits in my trouser pocket.
BTW I’ve been told that the proper name for a chain is ‘an albert’. No, I don’t know why.
