Anyone seen Roger Waters in concert?

Haven’t seen him, but I’ve heard a bunch of little snippits of Roger stopping shows to berate and scold the audience for clapping, singing along, taking pictures. You know, enjoying themselves. I don’t think I could suffer through a show like that. He seems like a real ass, who makes the whole thing about him.

I’d like to see some of the Floyd stuff done, but by the other guys, and now that Richard is dead, ain’t gonna happen. Dave and Nick are great, and you can replace Roger (in my opinion), but it isn’t Floyd without Richard.

If I had to choose, I’d choose Gilmour over Waters, and certainly Gilmour and Wright over Waters (like in 2006).

But I’ve never experienced what you’re talking about with Waters. I know there was that incident on the Animals tour, but he seems to have mellowed a bit in the last 10 years or so.

That was my first time seeing him. Brendan Byrne Arena in New Jersey. Me and my friends had taken some quality acid. He opened with “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” and the way it was echoing around the place was amazing. Clapton was awesome, though many songs sounded like he was going to break out into Layla or Let it Rain. I’ve seen Waters at Jones Beach years later and it was still a great show.

That is not at all my experience with him in concert - the opposite, in fact. It’s not like he’s up there dancing around, but in the shows I saw he tried quite enthusiastically to get the crowd cheering and clapping throughout. I remember it vividly, because his reputation (based on the Animals tour that led to his disgust with stadium shows) was as you say. If it was ever true, I don’t think it is anymore. He seems like he’s having a ton of fun up there.

Well, sure, now he is!

The clip I have has him called people “cunts” and to “fucking stop whistling and shouting”, because “he wanted to hear the song”.

Someone in an earlier post mentioned the sound system. This will likely vary in different arenas, but I’ve heard a bunch of different acts in Phillips Arena in Atlanta, and Roger Waters “The Wall” tour was BY FAR the best sounding. Rolling Stone magazine had mentioned that he (Roger) was super detail oriented about stuff like that, and had gone all out to make his shows sound superb. Based on my limited sample size (one show, one arena), he succeeded.

Isn’t that the infamous Animals incident?

Don’t know. It’s just labeled, “Roger- Shut the Fuck Up and Play” in my music library.

In all fairness, after listening to it closer, the first part is him calling someone who is lighting firecrackers a “cunt”, and rightfully so. But the clip has many other instances of him stopping and being a dick.

I’m a Gilmore fan, so I’m biased. :o

That absolutely is the Animals incident. It’s what triggered The Wall to be made. (Well, that and a bunch of hangups about his parents.)

I’m more of a Gilmour fan, too. But Waters’ shows are spectacular, and he comes to Australia, unlike Gilmour.
