Anyone want an email pen-pal?

Thanks, but I should tell you I’m just starting to get into indie pop and most of my other favorite music is more mainstream. Tool, the Chili Peppers, Michelle Branch, A Perfect Circle, and so on. I’ll listen to about anything outside pure techno or opera though. Country, pop, rock, metal, bubblegum, industrial… anything really.

Assuming you’re still interested and don’t mail me first, I’ll send something off later tonight or tomorrow along with a couple other emails to various people… I’m not feeling smart enough to have a real conversation right now, let alone three or four.

I’m not planning on getting that friendly, but you never know.

I’m always forgetting to turn my IM services on and chat rooms tend to end up as unpleasantly long silences. If I can’t muster up an email or two a week, then there’s no hope left for me.

Let’s see… I’m a 23 year old male with a degree in computer science, which is a suitably vague descriptor for a field that covers a whole lot of different subjects including testing video games, which is what I’m doing for now. Predictably, I’m a gamer of both the console and PC stripes, with some actual roleplaying thrown in. My surprisingly full schedule is as follows: “sleep work home {Dope game read eat get clawed by cat} repeat” and the weekends are for all the other stuff like spending time with my parents and brother.

With regards to culture, in the words of C. Montgomery Burns: “I may not know art, but I know what I hate.” I don’t really pay attention to music except as background noise as I’m driving. I like Terry Pratchett, Arrested Development and pointless puzzles that are needlessly complicated.

If for some reason that sounds interesting, my email’s in my profile.

ugh, must go to bed, but must sound interesting first.

Well, I’m a 31 year old male, married for 10 years, 1 kid (a 21 month old daughter), and a cat and a bird. I love canoeing, camping and photography. Just getting back into photographs for artistic sake, as I was a semi-professional photographer for a long while.

My wife and I owned an educational software company for the last 11 years, but thanks to a waning economy, and a socio-pathic conman, that came to a crashing halt in May, and I’ve been deliriously happy ever since. Now we work half time doing contract work, and spend the rest of the time with our wonderful daughter.

I enjoy traveling. Last big trip was to East Africa, where we spent a month bumming around with the masai, and rafting the Nile.
Come morning I’ll actually get around to reading everyone else’s, and hopefully send out some emails.

I’m not saying only Spanish-speakers need apply. Just that’d be a nice bonus. If I could find a polyglot Spanish / English / German dork like me to converse with, it’d be heaven, but I’ll take English speakers. Can’t be too picky.

Ah, why not. I need to stay up a bit more to finish ripping some CDs from my sister who departs tomorrow, so I may as well join in the fun. Plus - I don’t already kill enough time online, of course!

I’m 18, female, originally hailing from New Jersey but I’ve fled to a small liberal arts college in New Mexico. The school is a bit (well, very) odd: Technically, I’m a liberal arts major, but the coursework is equivilant to a double major in philosophy and literature with a minor in mathematics. Needless to say, I’m a complete geek (not the math kind, but the really dorky kind). I’m a shameless book addict, and if you let me loose in a bookstore or library, I will leave with a new book.

I’m also an aspiring writer (who’s actually had one essay published, but that’s its), who spends way too much time scribbling random thoughts onto notecards.
Politically, I’m the quintessential “borederline-extremist Angry Young Liberal”. Eventually I’d like to work perhaps as a lobbyist in DC. In the meantime I settle for writing lots of angry letters. Outside of that realm of geekiness, I’m also a martial arts geek, with eight years of training and counting, and I don’t plan on giving up until my knees finally get really angry and quit on me. I also enjoy a good couple miles of mountain biking or running. Violinist, disorganized, music geek, amateur language buff (know Spanish, working on ancient Greek), and general weirdo have also been used to describe me.

Also, I’ve got a really cute dog at home. She’s a mutt and old, but still a puppy at heart.

sounds like fun

Let’s see. I’m an 18 year old male, that first fell onto the mortal coil in St. Louis, Missouri. Since then I have been relocated several times to me current location in the suberbs of Detroit. I’m a hopeless computer geek at heart, but I partake in several school sports (Im a senior in high school). Starting linebacker for the highschool football team and the tear 1 backstroker for the swim team. And no, I don’t wear a speedo, I wear a jammer damnit!!! (well, I was, keep reading)

Lemme see, other areas to cover. I have a strong hatred of spelling and all things nitpicky in life, as well I hate pants. My sense of humor is a bit twisted, some may even call it sprained, but I enjoy chatting with people and listening to what they have to say. I currently work for a law firm being their network guy (no official job title :o ) and also work at a subway just because I don’t have the balls to quit. I have two black furry overlords at home, whom I must feed dog chow daily, or else I will be brutally punished, they love their dog chow.

For leisure time, I like to read what the dopers here have to say, and I used to do martial arts until I blew out my knee last year and have yet to be able to run again. I have no political beliefs that Im aware of, but I suppose you could call me moderately apathetic.

I’ll be buying my charter member in the next several days

Ok, I’ll bite!

Initial disclaimer: I am a terrible correspondent. Sometimes I forget to reply to an email for a week or more. This doesn’t mean I don’t want to hear from you! It’s just that I’m slack
Ok, so a little bit about me. I’m almost 31, a dyke living in Brisbane, Australia, with my beautiful partner, MaxBabe. I’ve been a computer nerd for about as long as I can remember. Not surprisingly, I’m in the IT industry. I’m an IT manager for a steel company. I have two dogs, a white german shepherd and a rottweiler. I’ve just started a masters degree in networking and systems administration.

I haven’t had much of a life the last ten years or so; mostly I’ve been in the “get up, go to work, work, come home, go to sleep” rut. I’ve been extricating myself from that, but occasionally I revert to my old patterns. I’ve started reading crime fiction - I’ve torn through all of Michael Connelly’s stuff and have started reading James Lee Burke’s novels.

I’ve got myself back into gaming, namely Counter-strike: source. Many thanks are owed to SenorBeef, who has graciously set up a Counter-strike server. I’ve bought myself a nice new machine, so now I’m getting killed much quicker than before!

What else. I used to be a real die-hard volleyballer, but I’ve stopped playing (for now) due to a shoulder injury.

Ok, best I stop… before I say so much it removes the need for anyone to actually write to me

My addy is sdmb@maxxxie - dot - net.

Max

Oh, I’ll play, if someone wants me.

I’m 26, male, and a mildly-Libertarian person of non-denominational Christian faith, but I’m really really unreligious. As in, I don’t go to church or think about it much, or talk about it much, I just know what I believe, and don’t try to sway anyone else to my point of view. Well, except for the occasional intolerant sort from my own faith. I bring this up only because I’m rambling incoherently.

I have an odd, all-encompassing sense of humor. I find humor in almost everything. I enjoy non-sequiturs, puns, referential humor, slapstick, you name it.

I have a dirty mind, as a select few can attest to, but I keep it under wraps, unless prompted. Don’t want it to get spoiled.

I am a media junkie. I watch TV, watch movies, read books - I devour them voraciously. But I try to watch or read them first. I think I just enjoy stories and worlds - so I take in every piece of fiction I can find. I particularly enjoy comedies, but I enjoy dramas as well, and while not in a league with many of our fine posters here, I’m something of a movie buff. I enjoy SciFi and Fantasy genre stuff the best - and loved shows like Mystery Science Theater, Futurama, Family Guy, the Venture Brothers, Buffy and the other Whedonverse shows, et cetera.

I’m the geekiest geek you know. If it’s there to geek about, I geek it. Okay, so I don’t really cover the bases of some of the older forms of Geekery - I’m no ham radio operator, no matter how you slice it. But I do enjoy all manner of video games, both console and PC, with an emphasis on RPGs, “Strategery”, and Fighting Games. I collect comic books. Lots of comic books. I looooove comic books. I’m an IT professional - a database jockey, to be precise. My favorite hobby of all is tabletop roleplaying games, though. I can talk about them endlessly. And probably will.

I have a really darn good memory, and can play trivia games with the best of them. I’ve even beaten Aesiron to a few Star Trek questions on the StraightDope IRC channel’s trivia bot.

Hmmm. While I can be argumentative on certain subjects, I don’t offend easily - or at all, unless I perceive a personal attack in something. So bring on all the lewd anecdotes - I can take’em!

Regarding e-mail correspondance - I like asking questions - sometimes nosy ones. I like answering questions too. For best results, email me at the address shown in my SDMB Email Profile Link Thingy, but instead of the adelphia.net there, substitute gmail.com. I check my gmail account consistently throughout the work day, and will probably answer most communications in minutes.

I think that’s everything. Everything’s fine here… we’re fine. How are you?

Ah yes, Candid Gamera’s post reminds me. I believe you can look up my e-mail through my username, but also send it to gmail.com instead of uiuc.com. I hate my school e-mail.

I’d like an email pen-pal, but I’m really rather boring.
Everyone who’s posted so far sounds far too interesting!
Anybody want to exchange emails about not much at all?

I’m female, 44. I like plants and animals and rocks and stuff like that.
I don’t collect anything, I don’t like sports, and I don’t understand politics at all.

If anybody wants to talk about general day-to-day stuff like the weather or what’s for supper, pick me!

Sounds fine with me. My email’s in my profile.

Yay! I’ll get busy boring you to tears right now!

Me too! Me too!

I’m 35, female, single, and a mom to LilMiss (aged 11). I live in Minnesota, have done so all my life. I work for a large county as a Child Support Officer, but have quasi BAs in English, Speech/Comm/Theater, and Humanities. I say quasi as I have all the classes, I just quit before I could finalize everything. Now Augsburg wants a few grand to give me my piece of paper that calls me ejumakated. I was planning on becoming a secondary ed teacher until I realized I didn’t have the necessary mentality to be a teacher. I would like to become a librarian when I grow up though.

I listen to almost all kinds of music, although I am not a fan of “Bitch N Ho” rap or “She Dun Me Wrong” country. I’m an avid reader, primarily courtroom/police type fiction and BritChickLit. Right now I’m reading “Forty Words for Sorrow” by Giles Blunt. Pretty Good. Not as much into Sci-Fi as I used to be, but read Fantasy ever now and then. I also used to be a big time RPGer, but that was then. I’m addicted to The Amazing Race, and watch L&O, CSI, and gameshows. I also go see movies and rent them (Kiss to Netflix!!) very often. With having the kid, most of our movie viewing tends to be of the Tweener variety, but I appreciate many genres. OK. I don’t get into war films and westerns too much. I love obscure trivia, pointless facts, and silly word games.

Politically, I lean left. I pay attention to social politics moreso than economic politics and such. I can talk politics, but I usually stay mum. I don’t know why. I do have a problem condensing my opinions and talking/writing in a linear manner. I am the Queen of Tangents, as a professor once named me.

My e-mail is in the profile- go for it!

Aww heck, I’m in. I don’t know half of you as well as I’d like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Male, 30, married, kids.

Interests: heck, what am I not interested in? I’m writing The Worlds Greatest Anime Series (well, it will be soon  ), I’m trying my hand at 3d modelling and texturing, taking a Chinese class, following Cassini / Huygens, play guitar, computer programmer from time to time. I’m a jack of all trades, master of few

Email in profile, send away.

Roland, maybe I’m just weird, but that sounds like a lot of fun to read.

*Bambi, puedo hablar alguno espanol. Estudiaba la lengua por cinco anos. Tambien, pase un mes en Espana. (Sorry about the lack of accents and the like- I don’t know how to do them here).

Ugh, after all that I forgot to mention that French is my first language, and though my French skills are now lacking, I’d love to chat with any francophones on this board
Max.

My email is in my profile…

I’m a 32 year old SAHM of 2 kids (the girl is 3 1/2 and the boy is 15months) I am happily married. I live in the lovely state of MA (ok so I lied about the lovely part) I teach ceramics and scrapbook classes. I also have this bizarre obsession that Ebay has turned into something almost out of control with Monopoly stuff.

I like to read but don’t always have a lot of time for that. I bake cakes in my spare time (usually for the animal shelter bake sale) and when I have too much time to think - or when I sum myself up like this - I feel like a Donna Reed clone that would make anyone (including myself) cringe. I have had people tell me that I am the kind of person they love to hate. :frowning: I just don’t wear pearls and high heels and I do own a dishwasher.

Oh and I broke my arm 2 weeks ago today. Yuck.

Ok, I’ll try this.

I’m a 29-year-old Ivy League grad, but I was never on the fast track. I guess I was on the commuter line, but now I’m off the tracks altogether. I was a 50-hour-a-week consultant when I quit. I went back to grad school, and graduated with a MS and a bun in the oven. I’m now a stay-at-home mother to an almost 1-year-old and have yet to actually use my master’s degree in any way. Good thing it was fully funded.

I live in what was formerly a small town in NH that has recently been more and more invaded by suburban sprawl. That depresses me. But in the winter I can still cross-country ski from my doorstep into the woods. I love finding unexpected surprises, and I think life is too short for seeing the same thing twice. That means I love to explore randomly on hikes and on my bicycle. I’ve long thought I’d like to make a little pop-o-matic thing for a D&D-style die for my handlebars that I could use at each intersection to choose truly random routes.

Um…well, that’s a little bit about me. If I didn’t scare you off, send me an email. As I said, I love unexpected surprises, so I’ll welcome one-and-all.

I’m in!

I’m a 27 year old male, single. Born in Bombay, travelled much of the world before I was old enough to realise it, and made the most of it when I was. I use to be painfully shy until about 5 years ago. Now, I’m just shy. I have a few extremely close friends, almost all of whom I’ve known since childhood.

‘Nice’ is the word most people would use to describe me. Ugh. Not that it’s not true… I’d just rather have some other description attributed to me

I enjoy watching movies, but have a deep dislike for the stuff Bollywood churns out. I used to be a voracious reader of fiction, but of late I’ve been constrained by time. I re-read books multiple times. I absolutely love to travel. My to-do list has “drive cross-continent across North America and Europe”.

I am a total foodie! I’ll eat absolutely anything  I enjoy cooking, but hate cleaning up after. I listen to alalmost all kinds of music, all the time. My current MP3 cd has Simon & Garfunkel, Mike & the Mechanics, Hootie, Bruce Springsteen, assorted progressive rock and rock ballads.

I am a total gadget freak - all the money I save up, I spend on electronic stuff. I’m also a car nut - I have a post graduate degree in automotive engineering. 2 years ago, I switched careers, and I’m hoping my current profession will one day afford me the pleasure of owning whatever car I desire.

I love dogs, don’t understand cat-lovers. Also, I once got bitten by a rabbit, so I don’t like 'em either.

I’d love to have a pen-pal! My address is in my profile… MAIL ME!!

I’m in. (if I have weird persons stalking about the house or garden, I shall assume that they came from faithfool and send them back appropriately packaged)
I’m 25, live in England and work as a freelance fundraiser (at the moment I’m busily arranging a Town Quiz to help the tsunami victims). I love Formula 1 and the Simpsons and I’m mad on Harry Potter. I’ve got a large record collection and love collecting music and 80s stuff. I love doing trivia challenges, quizzes, games that sort of thing and have depleted the pub quiz team of several bottles of booze. I’m keen on learning languages, so i can write in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and a little of Welsh, Dutch and Afrikaans. I play Scrabble at National level and I’m a drama fiend(my next role will be as a Scottish piper :stuck_out_tongue: ) and love travelling. I’m single, but looking, so cute females will be especially welcome and I’m only too happy to snailmail too(I love hearing the plink of mail, especially when it’s not a bill/tax/library return)
