Are you sure it’s an invitation-based system? I see no indication that it isn’t simply closed to new registrations until they move it to Google’s systems, as the home page says. (http://www.writely.com/)
FYI MessyPaint, it might be a bad idea to put your email out there in open and machine-readable, that’s a good way to attract spam. Spammers have bots spidering the web much like Google does, but searching for email addresses to spam. I’d ask a mod to change it into something like onestorystreet at gmail dot com.
Revtim, as for it being invitation-based, check out the Writely blog for more info. Current users can add as many as 50 people, who in turn can add as many as 50 others, etc. “And they’ll tell two friends, and they’ll tell two friends, and so on, and so on…”
Which is interesting, since it only takes 50[sup]6[/sup] to reach 15 billion. It’s just a matter of knowing someone who knows someone.

Hey, should I have invites now? I don’t see them. Where should I see them, if I had them?

Revtim, it’s not really “invitations”; you click “New” up at top-left to create a new document, then click the little arrow on the “collaborate” tab, and click “add or remove collaborators.” You add collaborators’ e-mail addresses, and it e-mails them a password and such. (Adding collaborators adds them to that document only; they can’t access the rest of your stuff on Writely, but you can all freely access and edit that document.)
And yes, everyone who’s signed up should be able to invite 50 more people; on the “add or remove collaborators” menu, it tells you how many you have remaining.
(By the way, apparently Writely won’t work in Safari, but will work in Firefox on Mac.)
