Appalling board performance

FTR, I never suggested that you disclose that information to the public; I only asked whether you were tracking those items.

And for those keeping score, I got one database error and one login error while trying to post this reply.

Been crapping out on me this evening.

I’m afraid you/y’all/you guys are mistaken.

What I said was that I (me/myself) would be an idiot for refusing even to hear the advice of a professional interior designer.

That is not speculation. That is a fact. I know these things about myself because I am I.

The only speculation I have seen was from Jenny herself, when she speculated that Seven would somehow invade the privacy of the SDMB user information when he ran his analysis.

From this post:

“What company would give some stranger unfettered access to their computers, computers that have not only website and message board information but other data as well?”
She wrote that despite Seven (and others) pointing out specifically (and repeatedly) that no access to any actual SDMB data would be necessary.

Since we’ve (you’ve) opened that door, allow me please also to point out that her post was a prime example of using the “Close Thread” power to have the last word, a practice which is what we in the South would call “unseemly”. Even Dex has promised to be more mindful of not abusing that power.

Just an update:

I have not received a response from Ed Zotti to my email in post #42.

I had no problems with board performance yesterday. Today, it is slow and is not loading pages.

It’s possible that there are just too many users. With a given budget you can only support a certain amount of usage. Once you go beyond that point performance goes downhill fast.

You know the site does bog and error out a lot, but somehow I don’t think

“hey fuckin’ fix it GUUAAAHH” is going to do much. I don’t respond well with that either.

Why is everyone so extreme on teh internets?
Just my two pennies worth.

Bit of pot and kettle syndrome here. Saying everyone is extreme is a bit…extreme, don’t you think?

Speculating sounds sort of medical, and extreme sounds sort of culinary, but extreme speculating…sounds revolting.

I think you missed teh jokez.

Testing.

EDIT: Ah ha! This is the first time in three (3) days I’ve been allowed to log in, let alone post.

Personally, I think my subscription should be extended a few days.

You’re correct. I paid for an extension to your Butts, Boobs, n’ Beavers* magazine subscription, so you’ll be seeing at least another month of…well.

  • [sub]A real magazine, at one time.[/sub]

That’s nothing. Back in university, I knew a guy (I swear it was not me. Really!) who had not one, but two (2) different issues of a periodical called Girls Who Like to Suck Big Cocks laid out on his coffee table.

We’re having problems with our service provider, which hosts many Creative Loafing sites. Short version of long story: (a) We mirror the master database server to a slave, which handles many of the DB queries. If we don’t do this the MB can lock up in as little as 15 minutes, as Jerry determined by recent experiment. This problem became acute after a vB upgrade last year. (b) Although the master server is a dedicated resource, the slave is shared and uses a shared data pipe. Apparently our host is having bandwidth issues. When the pipe fills up, everybody using shared resources has problems. We surmise they’re getting a lot of beefs about this. Jerry has been inquiring and they tell us an upgrade is supposed to be in place by mid-October. If that doesn’t work, we’ll have to see what a dedicated slave will cost. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the update.

Thanks for explaining, Ed.

One of the most annoying things to me about the poor performance of the board was the feeling that nothing was being done to remedy it. It’s good to know that the problem is being worked on.

Apologies accepted! Thanks for updating us. (Just be careful about post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacies — “problem became acute after a vB upgrade”.)

Considering the duration of the issues, I assume you have an SLA with the service provider that will provide for appropriate penalties?

(Yeah yeah yeah, privately-held company, can’t discuss these things, etc., etc. Figured it might be worth asking anyway.)

Seems to be working well now. Thanks for the info, Ed.

Sweet. (Well, not sweet that there are known issues, but sweet that the known issues are being worked on.) Thanks, Ed.

What I can’t understand is when I visit the board at 10:02pm and the board says that my last visit was at 10:02pm (the same day) and all threads show up as read. Weird and annoying as hell.
