In an online conversation with a male acquaintance, he said that advancements in cloning made him nervous because “They’re showing women that men aren’t necessary.”
Is this something that men really worry about?

It’s not something I worry about.
Only men who belong to the tinfoil hat brigade would worry about something this stupid.
Not me, not as long as there are spiders that need squished.
No worries from me. No worries I have ever heard a fellow male express. It is quite the leap (of ignorance and paranoia) to come to that conclusion.
What was he watching, Spock’s Brain?
That was my gut reaction, but hey, I’ve been surprised before.
(I can’t believe I typoed in the title. Damn.)
I’ll worry, first, about whether the zombie, alien penguin armies will attack Rochester, before I worry about that.
I don’t know many women that, given the choice, would choose to clone over traditional methods. Sex with a man is still the easiest, cheapest, and by far the most pleasant way to get pregnant. Plus most women still want to raise children with the help of a man. I don’t think men have to worry.
Plus, as someone else mentioned, there are still the spiders.
Heh. Who’s gonna do all the heavy lifting around my house?
As long as she who must be obeyed needs things picked up… I’ll be safe.
No.
I never thought that women will like men until something different comes along. We already have that to some degree. They are called lesbians and most women have refused to convert.
Cloning worries me, but not for that reason. Geez.
Anybody who has been a regular reader of these boards for a while already knows I’m unnecessary…
The wife just keeps me around to keep her feet warm at night.
I don’t worry about that. I’m already here.
Isn’t something I’m worried about. Even at my most frustrated I would never ever do without women. I suspect that many women feel the same about men.
I’ve actually witnessed the sort of opposite. A businessman I know who’s got a mean misogynistic streak decided he wanted kids without a woman in his life. Fair enough. But he never would have been allowed to adopt, considering his lifestyle and hard-to-conceal temper. So he bought eggs and paid a surrogate (whom he had little to no contact with). Technically, women were involved, but he found a way for them to have as little involvement as possible… until the kid was actually born and assigned four different female nannies, that is.
Obviously the fact that, after conception, a woman can bring a child into the world (or decide not to) has freaked out some men over the ages, resulting in some pretty nasty treatment. But if a man thinks women only consider men ‘necessary’ for babies, get him to a sperm bank.
Says the person with the most feminist username on the SDMB! I believe this is a double-bluff, and therefore I’m terrified. Except I’m not using the tinfoil on my head…
I worry about a Canadian invasion too, but I’m glad to know you are up there on the line in Rochester as a first line of defense.
I’d like to say that I understand what this means. After all, they’re words. They’re even in English. But if I said I had even a glimmer of insight into what they mean when strung together like that, I’d be lying.
I dunno, are women worried about the advancements in sex bots?
