I have checked out this board for about a month and decided to log in yesterday. Satan, Manhattan, Purplecrackwhore, Kellibelli, etc… built interesting threads and I thought I could add my two cents.
I posted in the “About this message board” section to check out the boldface/italics/tag line process and I was jumped on immediately by two Straight Dope regulars.
“Dave?”, “Troll?”, is this a message board or a Masonic lodge? Sorry if I sound bitter, it’s been a rough winter.
Back to the MPSIMS board, thanks for your attention.
I thought that some of the long time posters here were acting like a high school clique, expecting new people to be humble and subservient. I learned to ignore this when I realized that many of the long time posters ARE in a high school clique. I wish Cecil would manifest himself and say that members should be judged by the content of their posts rather than the time they having been posting.
You are 100% right mipsman. You have to prove yourself on this board before people will accept you…I don’t know how long it takes to become a “regular” but I know it starts with the date that you start posting and not the date that you started lurking. You’ll get broke in fast…then the “regulars” will move on to the next newbie. All in all it’s a nice board.
I looked at your thread in ATMB and I think the first response was just a joking respone to your obviously facetious test post. I think the troll remark was in jest as well. Pay it no mind, welcome aboard!
Everybody is a newbie at some point… and I know I found that posting took some getting used to because I had never been to a message board before. But generally I think the people here are witty and friendly. Welcome aboard Stranger.

OK, this is a little heavy stuff for an early topic, but just stay in here,MPSIMS, for a while. Try a lighter topic, such as foot odor, beastiality, menstrual cups, your favorite trivia etc.
Yeah, they jumped on you pretty hard, didn’t they? One of the current trends is new people get accused of being an old poster under a new name. Sometimes true, most times not.
I have to agree with Sue. Everyone is new at some point, and sometimes newbies get jumped for questionable reasons. As long as you’re not too thin skinned, you’ll be OK. Everyone gets hammered now and then, Don’t let it get to you. By and large, we’re pretty good folks. Welcome to the jungle.
Still trying to think of something witty to say here
Well, it is possible to start off as a newbie here and fit in without massive hassle (I know this because I’ve done it – been posting about a month now without any flame wars bubbling up).
I’m not sure why whoever it was jumped on you on your test post; I guess your “posting style” is similar to some unbeloved departed one here. The joshing was lighter than some car-wrecks I’ve seen, but just about any “newbie” (user name that’s been on the board for less than a week) who starts a thread gets some version of that reaction, from some segment of the “regulars.”
My answer? Well, I haven’t started a topic yet, and that’s worked for me!
The other thing is to dig back a bit and see what these people do when they find a new poster who uses RaNdOm CaPiTaLiZaTiOn (god I hate typing like that, how does anyone do it?) or lots and lots of typos. Even fuzzy-wuzzy (who has already responded kindly here) got some grief for his…elliptical…approach…to…punctuation.
The nail that stick up gets hammered down, but if you can stick up in an interesting way (and hammer back when need be), you’ll fit in just fine. Good luck, and I hope you stick around.

Stranger, if you’ve been lurking for a while, you must know that there’s been some wierd shit going on lately. As a result, some of us are a tad paranoid.

Hi Stranger and welcome. Well I checked out your ATMB post and the replies…frankly I couldn’t tell if moriah was joking or not. Maybe others who know him/her better would know. It’s true that a few weeks ago a bunch of the “regulars” were jumping on some people, saying they were trolls who were using different names, blah, blah. I sure didn’t get into those, because I’m not on here enough to know all the posters that well, and as for trolls, I take the attitude of leave 'em alone and they’ll go away. I’m a “regular,” but don’t have the time to spend here that some of the posters do (a lot of them post from work - I can’t). You do get the sense that there’s a clique of sorts – the regulars who are on here so much they get to know each other very well and share info, gossip, and jokes that you don’t get. Apparently there’s an SDMB chat room too where some of the regulars go, and they’ll bring things back from the chat and you feel kinda left out. But all-in-all, the SDMB is cool – I’ve gotten a lot of info and help in response to my posts. Just don’t piss Kelli off.
Hey, Stranger–new in town? (Sorry, I never had the opportunity to say that before and just couldn’t pass it up.)
I checked out the ATMB and yep, you got tromped on. If it’s any consolation, the first time I posted, Moriah jumped all over me wearing football cleats. Don’t let it discourage you, please. This really is a neat place with a lot of really nice folks.
